1. “Two Worlds the Series”

Kram (Nat Natasit Uareksit), a kindhearted young painter, reconnects with Phupha (Gun Thapanawat Kaewbumrung), someone he only vaguely remembers from childhood as the entitled heir to his father’s massive business. Reunited as young adults, Phupha needs a temporary place to stay and ends up living with Kram and his family.

Now forced under the same roof, the two quickly realize there is more to each other than their outdated first impressions. They become more than just friends and fall deeply in love. It’s what looks like the perfect love story taking shape, but tragedy strikes. Sucked into the treacherous world of his family business, Phupha is murdered.

Kram is at a loss for how to move on, but fate takes the wheel and decides for him. Accidentally falling into a magical pool surrounded by legend, he ends up in what seems to be a parallel world, where the man he once loved is still alive but doesn’t know him, and this world’s Kram has already died.

What’s more, Thai (Max Kornthas Rujeerattanavorapan), a guy he once knew as a violent murderer, is now kind to him and is the only person who offers him a place to stay. Thai agrees to help Kram protect Phupha and find a way to return to his world.

Why it’s worth the watch:
If you like a little magic in your show, this one has it. This take on parallel worlds makes for an interesting setup: the same people and events seem to exist across these worlds, but their relationships and the timing and order of events differ. The question is, can events be changed? Expect truly endless chaos and twists to unfold as Kram helplessly tries to change Phupha’s future.

2. “The Eighth Sense”

5 BLs That Will Break Your Heart (Then Heal It)插图5

On the surface, “The Eighth Sense” looks like another university romance, with a fun surfing twist thrown in, but there’s so much more to this underrated K-BL. In fact, there’s nothing quite like it.

The story starts with a brief first meeting between two university students, Ji Hyun (Oh Jun Taek) and Jae Won (Lim Ji Sub). Ji Hyun is a freshman from the countryside without friends or any experience living in the big city, while Jae Won is an upperclassman who has just returned from the military. From their very first meeting, there is a quiet but overpowering tension between them.

A second meeting comes soon after, as the two unconsciously seek each other out, and their interest in each other only intensifies. Jae Won says they should be friends, but Ji Hyun is still hesitant about this new and mysterious guy, whom he doesn’t really know.

Later, Ji Hyun spots a poster at school for the surf club with Jae Won on it. Despite not knowing how to swim, he decides to join. Going on the club’s first trip to the beach, Jae Won and Ji Hyun get paired up as partners, and the start of their secret but quietly passionate relationship officially takes off.

Why it’s worth the watch:
“The Eighth Sense” shows a young adult relationship in an honest, realistic, and beautiful way. So much detail went into this show, from the visuals to the music, and the lead acting performances are pure excellence. This show feels indie and totally unique compared to other Korean BLs of its time. In no way is it trying to be mainstream or like other BLs. Saying this is a masterpiece probably isn’t an overstatement at all.

3. “Wishing Upon the Shooting Stars”

5 BLs That Will Break Your Heart (Then Heal It)插图9

In “Wishing Upon the Shooting Stars,” a down-on-his-luck man named He Xiang Yong (Jed Chung) loses his city job and reluctantly returns to his hometown by the sea. Instead of being met with open arms and understanding, he’s only reminded of the dreams he hasn’t achieved and how behind he feels in life. The only good thing that he’s gotten out of returning, it seems, is reconnecting with his childhood best friend, Wan Zhe (Yu Chieh En).

Xiang Yong is completely lost in life, but he finds an unexpected second chance in his old hideout spot by the sea. Returning there one night with Wan Zhe, the two casually make a wish under a starry night sky. His friend wishes for romance, while Xiang Yong wishes for a fresh start as someone no one knows.

5 BLs That Will Break Your Heart (Then Heal It)插图10

When they wake up the next day, they realize their wishes have come true. Besides his best friend, no one in town recognizes Xiang Yong. He looks the same and hasn’t changed, but to everyone, even his own father, he’s a stranger.

Xiang Yong takes the chance at a second life and acts like someone else, but when he meets his old crush and classmate Hao Wei (Chu Meng Hsuan), it becomes increasingly hard to hide who he really is and run away from his past.

Xiang Yong may have gotten his wish, but he realizes it comes at an unexpected cost.

Why it’s worth the watch:
“Careful what you wish for” is most definitely the mantra behind this show. Somehow, this story manages to be absolutely hilarious and absolutely sad at the same time. It perfectly balances humor with honest depictions of belonging, identity, and love. As a story about trying to find yourself and wanting a life you imagined to become true, this story is likely to hit close to home for anyone who watches it.

4. “Once Again”

Shin Jae Woo (Moon Ji Yong) is a man haunted by his past in “Once Again.” When he was a young boy, his life was saved by Kang Ji Hoon (Lee Hyun Jun), a good-natured university student. But saving Jae Woo cost Ji Hoon his life. He was only a child, but Jae Woo feels responsible for Ji Hoon’s life being cut short.

One day, with the past still tormenting him, he returns to the dorms where Ji Hoon stayed before he died. What he finds is a lifeless, abandoned room where time seems to have stopped. There, he also finds an old phone. Out of curiosity, he picks up the old phone to see if it still works and is surprised to hear a man on the other end of the line. The man is Ji Hoon from 15 years ago.

Somehow, the phone transports Jae Woo to the past, where Ji Hoon is still alive, and Jae Woo is a child, not yet saved by Ji Hoon. Jae Woo meets past Ji Hoon and vows to rewrite history and save his life, even though Ji Hoon has no idea about his impending future.

Why it’s worth the watch:
This show feels like a time capsule, and it has an oddly cozy, comforting vibe, despite the rather grim premise. It definitely has the feel of an old-school K-drama, and, being from 2022, it is nearing old-school territory. However, this heartwrenching love story about loss and regrets still holds up. For a short watch that’ll make you go through all the emotions, this is the one to start.

Tian (Mix Sahaphap Wongratch), a rich party boy, gets a wake-up call when he undergoes an emergency heart transplant and learns about the girl’s heart that saved his life. Investigating on his own to find out who saved his life, he discovers it was Tofun (Aye Sarunchana Apisamaimongkol), a volunteer teacher who worked in a small village in the countryside. Her life was suddenly cut short by a car accident.

When Tian gets hold of her diary and finds her unfinished plans, he learns about the meaningful life she strove to live in the village and how starkly it contrasts with his past of partying, drinking with friends, and being reckless with his life.

5 BLs That Will Break Your Heart (Then Heal It)插图18

Feeling both guilty and grateful, Tian sneaks out against his parents’ wishes and leaves his posh life in the city behind to step into Torfun’s life as a volunteer teacher. Upon arrival, he meets the man that she had growing feelings for: a stern forest officer named Phupha (Earth Pirapat Watthanasetsiri).

Phupha doesn’t take Tian seriously when he first arrives, and their relationship immediately starts on a bad note, but Tian isn’t willing to give up on repaying Torfun for the second chance at life she has given him.

5 BLs That Will Break Your Heart (Then Heal It)插图19

As Tian and Phupha get to know each other and feelings arise, things clearly get complicated. Phupha was the one Torfun had feelings for, and Phupha doesn’t know about Tian’s connection to Torfun.

Why it’s worth the watch:
Also known as “A Tale of a Thousand Stars,” this might be a bit of throwback, but there’s no doubt it’s still making viewers cry sad and happy tears to this day. The love story in this Thai BL feels epic, and the journey to happiness is totally worth it. For a serious tear-jerker with a unique storyline, “1000 Stars” delivers.

5 Must-Watch Meta BLs For A Deep‑Dive Into The Genre

It might sound like a tongue twister, but meta BLs are BLs that know they are a BL.

In other words, these are BLs that intentionally comment on BL storytelling and the genre’s identity: They can break the fourth wall, parody beloved BL tropes and clichés, or tell a BL story through the setting of making an actual BL. Basically, these are BLs perfectly suited for watchers who want to celebrate the genre or take a deep dive into how BL works.

If you’re ready to try a meta BL for yourself or are already a meta expert, these are five of the most BL BLs in existence worth adding to your watch list:

1. “A Man Who Defies the World of BL“

5 Must-Watch Meta BLs For A Deep‑Dive Into The Genre插图

Released in 2021, “A Man Who Defies the World of BL” is one of the most iconic meta BLs out there to this day. It’s a crash course in BL logic, clichés, and archetypes delivered in the funniest way possible. Arguably, no BL has BL’d harder than this multi-season Japanese series.

It tells the story of a loner university student named Mob (Inukai Atsuhiro), who is no more than an average side character until he stumbles upon a life‑changing realization: he’s in a manga, and not just any manga, a BL.

5 Must-Watch Meta BLs For A Deep‑Dive Into The Genre插图1

All around him, Mob starts to notice that guys are pursuing other guys, clichés are happening everywhere all the time, and couples are forming whenever two guys accidentally brush shoulders or lock eyes. Any conversation about girls somehow naturally shifts to a conversation about boys, and the girls at school have a weak presence, as if they are NPCs.

Mob tries to stay apart from it all and remain an insignificant side character, but the world of BL has other plans for him. Surrounded by a sea of men made for BL, he’s dangerously close to becoming a main character, and a main character in this world needs one thing: a love interest.

5 Must-Watch Meta BLs For A Deep‑Dive Into The Genre插图2

All that’s left to do is to protect himself and his adorable, unaware younger brother from the terribly handsome and very persistent men who continue to approach them. To fight off the BL plots and tropes, he must become an expert in BL.

5 Must-Watch Meta BLs For A Deep‑Dive Into The Genre插图3

Why it’s worth the watch:
The World of BL is insanely creative and will never fail to catch you off guard and make you laugh through Mob’s determination to not let the story he is trapped in rewrite his love life. It pokes fun at the genre but is also clearly passionate and proud of BL.

This show is a treat for any longtime BL fans because everything is hilariously on point. It’s unserious chaotic comedy in every episode, but the cheesy romantic moments somehow still land. You’ll be rooting for these couples, no matter how manufactured they feel. There’s a charm in the cliché, and this show owns that.

When you’re done, “The World of BL 2” and 3 continue Mob’s story. Will Mob beat the BL system or succumb to a handsome guy?

2. “I Became the Main Role of a BL Drama”

5 Must-Watch Meta BLs For A Deep‑Dive Into The Genre插图4

These days, Japanese BLs are known for giving away the show’s premise via an unusually long title, and “I Became the Lead in a BL” is no different! In this meta J-BL, a lead role in a BL adaptation of a popular manga gets dropped into the lap of rookie actor Aoyanagi Hajime (Akutsu Nichika). Even more of a surprise to Aoyanagi is that he’ll be starring alongside a famous actor with way more credentials, Akafuji Yuichiro (Abe Alan).

According to the drama script, it’s a neighbors-to-lovers plot where they end up living together under the same roof and find they like each other. The director and producers behind the show are very passionate about making the live adaptation of the manga a success, and their energy adds to the fun of this show.

5 Must-Watch Meta BLs For A Deep‑Dive Into The Genre插图5

However, an unexpected issue arises. During Aoyanagi and Akafuji’s first takes, it’s not the rookie Aoyanagi that is making mistakes or struggling to keep up, but it’s Akafuji who seems off. He’s delivering his lines, but it’s suspiciously stiff and distant. What’s really going on here? Well, there’s a secret involved.

5 Must-Watch Meta BLs For A Deep‑Dive Into The Genre插图6

Aoyanagi thinks he is the problem and, for whatever reason, Akafuji doesn’t like him. However, the truth is that Akafuji has had a longtime crush on Aoyanagi. In fact, he’s pretty much reached fanboy status, but he keeps it a secret.

Because the on-screen chemistry between their characters is off, the producers suggest they live together, like the very characters they are playing. The goal is to become more comfortable with each other, but little does Aoyanagi know that his co-star struggles just being in the same room with him.

5 Must-Watch Meta BLs For A Deep‑Dive Into The Genre插图7

Why it’s worth the watch:
Along with the fun meta premise, the show gives a painfully accurate depiction of what it’s like to have an overwhelming crush on someone and have no idea how to handle it when they are close. The internal dialogue between the characters, which is always hilariously on different wavelengths, brings peak humor to this show. This gives a more lighthearted and funny look at the scenario of two BL actors falling in love, so it’s great if you want to skip the heavier stuff and just laugh.

3. “Popular Serizawa Acts Weird Around Me“

5 Must-Watch Meta BLs For A Deep‑Dive Into The Genre插图8

“Popular Serizawa Acts Weird Around Me” is a new Japanese BL about an unsuspecting high school student who gets caught writing a BL in which the main character is based on the school’s popular boy.

Suzuki Hajime (Koizumi Kosaku) is a quiet loner who reads and writes BL but says he has no interest in dating a guy in real life. For his current work, he chooses his popular and very gorgeous classmate Serizawa Haruto (Shisaka Ryoto) as the lead. That’s all well and good until Serizawa happens upon Suzuki’s BL journal.

5 Must-Watch Meta BLs For A Deep‑Dive Into The Genre插图9
5 Must-Watch Meta BLs For A Deep‑Dive Into The Genre插图10

Suzuki fears Serizawa will be disgusted or even hate him, and his fears make sense. Not only is he a total overthinker, but he’s been hurt by friends in the past when word got around that he enjoys BL. Suzuki has kept his passion a secret ever since.

The plot twist? Serizawa isn’t mad at all. He is actually a BL reader himself and is interested in why Suzuki chose him. Suzuki’s surprise quadruples when Serizawa requests to be the first person to read Suzuki’s work. Reluctantly, Suzuki agrees, because he sort of (definitely) owes Serizawa for using him as a character without asking. You reap what you sow, Suzuki!

Why it’s worth the watch:
This sweet and cute Japanese BL hides a deeper conversation about the stigmas and judgments put onto BL fans, but you can take this show as seriously or as lightheartedly as you want. In terms of meta, this show explores what it’s like to like BL in secret as a guy, the fears he faces, and the love he has for the genre that watchers can all relate to. If you liked “Takara-kun & Amagi-kun” or “School Trip: Joined a Group I’m Not Close To,” this show gives similar vibes but with the added meta element.

4. “Deep In”

5 Must-Watch Meta BLs For A Deep‑Dive Into The Genre插图11

“Deep In” is another BL about BL actors playing in a BL, but it feels more serious in tone compared to its other meta-BL siblings that lean into comedy or parody. This drama gives a look at the BL film industry through the lens of two guys as they film a movie together, during which the line between manufactured intimacy and real feelings gets blurry.

In “Deep In,” a new and timid actor, Zhang Zhun (Shu Yaun), hasn’t gotten a role in the acting industry but is supported by his longtime girlfriend nonetheless. He finally secures his first lead role as the romantic interest of Zhen Xin (Ollie), a veteran actor with a big ego and way more experience to show for it.

5 Must-Watch Meta BLs For A Deep‑Dive Into The Genre插图12

During their first official meeting for the drama, they get off to a bumpy start. Zhang Zhun wants to give his all for the role, but all eyes are on him as the rookie, and one mistake could jeopardize his spot in the film. Meanwhile, Zhen Xin is perfectly comfortable in front of the camera. To say the least, Zhen Xin isn’t afraid to overstep boundaries to get Zhang Zhun out of his head and shoot the perfect shot.

5 Must-Watch Meta BLs For A Deep‑Dive Into The Genre插图13
5 Must-Watch Meta BLs For A Deep‑Dive Into The Genre插图14

The biggest challenge for Zhang Zhun is that the film requires several intimate scenes, including ones that are fully nude. Though he just barely pulls off his first audition scene — an intense makeout session with Zhen Xin — Zhang Zhun is totally out of his depth when it comes to on-screen intimacy with another guy.

What follows is a very meta rendition of the beloved roommates BL trope: on location to start filming, Zhen Xin and Zhang Zhun end up sharing a room to get more comfortable with each other. They’re given homework from the producers: watch BL films together in bed to prepare for their roles. This is the initial plan, but things quickly escalate as they begin to practice being intimate off-book in private.

5 Must-Watch Meta BLs For A Deep‑Dive Into The Genre插图15

Why it’s worth the watch:
This BL is about BL actors filming a BL, and it doesn’t get much more meta than that. Compared to other self-aware BLs, this one feels more serious and real as it portrays the interesting and complicated dynamic between two actors who, on one end, are performing for the screen, but on the other, feel something real too. A slow burn, killer tension and the whole “what is real, what is fake” question of it all make this an engrossing, on‑the‑edge‑of‑your‑seat watch. It’s romance, but with the intensity of a full-on thriller.

5. “Kabe-Koji-Nekoyashiki-kun Desires to Be Recognized”

5 Must-Watch Meta BLs For A Deep‑Dive Into The Genre插图16

In “Kabe-Koji-Nekoyashiki-kun Desires to Be Recognized,” a dark and gloomy homebody named Nekoyashiki Mamoru (Matsuoka Koudai) is a manga artist who specializes in erotic muscle BL.

Mamoru suffers from an intense superiority complex, which causes him to act like he is better than other manga artists while simultaneously feeling like a letdown that isn’t good enough to succeed. Judgment from others because of his genre choice has also contributed to his self-esteem issues.

5 Must-Watch Meta BLs For A Deep‑Dive Into The Genre插图17

Mamoru is fine living in his constant spiral of doom and gloom as he desperately tries to be recognized as an artist, but a blast from the past threatens to shake up his life.

The total opposite of Mamoru, Kazama Issei (Nakao Masaki) is a famous J-pop idol who is all sunshine and smiles. When the two went to school together, Mamoru developed a secret crush on him, but he’s always believed they had no chance because they were on completely different levels. As Issei gained popularity as a rising star, Mamoru was left struggling to make a name for himself in a niche genre of manga that gets more judgment than praise.

5 Must-Watch Meta BLs For A Deep‑Dive Into The Genre插图18

One day, during a manga convention, Issei shows up out of the blue holding a copy of Mamoru’s latest issue. Mamoru is caught off guard when Issei proudly proclaims he is a fan. While Issei is eager to reconnect, Mamoru feels they could never truly be friends, let alone anything more.

Why it’s worth the watch:
This meta BL follows a BL artist and the ups and downs they face as they pursue the genre. The weird, wacky, funny, and supportive characters in this show really shine, and its honest look at serious topics like self-esteem, self-love, and dreams makes it surprisingly deep. “Kabe Koji” is also secretly the perfect watch for anyone who identifies as an introvert or someone who isn’t an expert at social situations. You’ll definitely relate to Mamoru’s struggles to communicate and feel seen.

5 BLs Where The Bad Guy And The Good Guy Fall In Love

BLs with pairings that absolutely shouldn’t work but somehow do create the most satisfying relationship dynamics, period. Imagine a cop and a criminal or a geek and a gangster — now you can stop imagining and find a cozy spot to binge watch because these BLs already exist.

Sure, the good guy and bad guy pairing might sound unrealistic, but BL has always excelled at making the most unlikely pairings feel perfect. Sometimes the relationships that feel impossible, forbidden, and totally wrong are the ones that also feel the most right.

If you’re looking for the Harley Quinn and Joker relationships of BL, these are five BLs where the good guy and the bad guy make the perfect pair:

1. “The Heart Killers”

5 BLs Where The Bad Guy And The Good Guy Fall In Love插图

In the campy comedy-meets-crime BL “The Heart Killers,” real feelings take over the plot when two (mostly) regular guys get tangled up with assassins during an undercover operation that neither of them wanted to be a part of.

Kant (First Kanaphan Puitrakul) is a tattoo artist with a criminal past he’s trying to leave behind, but the police hold his record over his head. When he’s pressured into spying on two men suspected of being contract killers tied to recent political and business murders, Kant is forced to agree.

5 BLs Where The Bad Guy And The Good Guy Fall In Love插图1

Of course, there’s a twist right from the start: One of the suspected killers, Bison (Khaotung Thanawat Ratanakitpaisan), happens to be Kant’s unforgettable one‑night stand.

Bison may be a contract killer, but he’s actually a softie and a romantic who dreams of getting out of the business. In fact, he might have done so already if not for his older brother Fadel (Joong Archen Aydin), a sharper, colder assassin who insists they stay anonymous and unattached.

5 BLs Where The Bad Guy And The Good Guy Fall In Love插图2

In Fadel’s rulebook, there’s no room for relationships, which makes Kant’s job of getting close to Bison nearly impossible. That’s where Kant’s best friend Style (Dunk Natachai Boonprasert) comes in. Style is a carefree and wildly confident mechanic who owns his own shop. More importantly, he isn’t afraid to pursue something he wants. Agreeing to help his buddy (at a price, of course), Style becomes the Fadel-distraction that Kant desperately needs.

5 BLs Where The Bad Guy And The Good Guy Fall In Love插图3

What follows is a chaotic story of two best friends undercover, two assassins with secrets, a criminal organization with suspiciously well-dressed stakeholders, and a mission that absolutely does not go according to plan.

5 BLs Where The Bad Guy And The Good Guy Fall In Love插图4

Why it’s worth the watch:
This show has such fun characters, and the overall vibe definitely screams “Charlie’s Angels,” but with more BL of course. Crime, espionage, comedy, and chemistry are all dialed up to make this show the right amount of unserious. But make no mistake, it also has its tense moments that make you wonder, “Is someone going to die now?”

2. “Flower Boy”

5 BLs Where The Bad Guy And The Good Guy Fall In Love插图5

“Flower Boy” tells the love story between a rich company heir and a magical flower boy. As the two unexpectedly fall in love, a hidden agenda and dark truth come to light.

Deep in the forest, there’s a legend that a secret flower tribe lives in seclusion, and they’re known to have a supernatural gift: their natural fragrance can mesmerize anyone who smells it. This legend reaches Scent (Pearl Satjakorn Chalard), a workaholic vice president of a luxury perfume company. Focused on securing a future for his company, he’s looking for a new scent that will put his brand on top.

5 BLs Where The Bad Guy And The Good Guy Fall In Love插图6

Determined to track down this mythical tribe, he heads into the forest, only to run into danger and be saved by a beautiful young man named Gaysorn (Peak Peemapol Panichtamrong). Timid but protective of his land and people, Gaysorn is the heir of the tribe that Scent is searching for, and he happens to be the most fragrant member of them all.

5 BLs Where The Bad Guy And The Good Guy Fall In Love插图7

Gaysorn denies the existence of the flower tribe, but he gives off such an intoxicating scent that Scent can’t help but notice it. Amazed by how captivating Gaysorn’s scent is, Scent wants to find a way to capture it in a perfume and make a profit.

Hoping to win his trust, Scent convinces Gaysorn to return to Bangkok with him, promising to help find his missing mother who had left the forest and never returned. Without knowing Scent’s true intentions, Gaysorn leaves for a new and unfamiliar place with a man he knows little about.

5 BLs Where The Bad Guy And The Good Guy Fall In Love插图8

Why it’s worth the watch:
The cinematography, colors, and whimsical forest scenes are so pretty, and the way it clashes with the bright lights and coldness of the city really shows how different Gaysorn’s and Scent’s lives are. Watching Gaysorn try to adapt to the big city definitely feels like watching a princess who suddenly had to leave her fairytale land for something not so rose-tinted. All the while, Scent becomes more captivated by him and questions his own intentions. If you loved Pearl and Peak in “Love in the Moonlight,” you’ll love them in this too.

3. “The Lie We Lived In”

5 BLs Where The Bad Guy And The Good Guy Fall In Love插图9

In “The Lie We Live In,” a hired hitman, who kills whenever ordered to, meets someone he isn’t willing to hurt, even if it means going against orders.

Seo Yi Do (Kim Seung Beom) is a contract killer whose entire life revolves around his work. His latest target is Heo Dong Hwa (Lee Jeong Ho), and it’s supposed to be an easy in‑and‑out hit until his instructions change mid‑mission. Dong Hwa is hiding a phone with evidence Yi Do’s boss needs, so instead of killing him, Yi Do must keep him alive and stay in his home until he finds the phone.

5 BLs Where The Bad Guy And The Good Guy Fall In Love插图10

The plan goes further off course when Dong Hwa, now locked away, gets a visitor. Chu Tae Jeong (Kim Gyeong Min), one of Dong Hwa’s closest childhood friends, arrives to stay over. Friendly, trusting, and completely unaware of the danger he just stepped into, Tae Jeong immediately assumes Yi Do is Dong Hwa’s older brother who has been living abroad.

5 BLs Where The Bad Guy And The Good Guy Fall In Love插图11

Yi Do goes along with the lie, hiding his true intentions and secretly searching for the phone. But, like any lie left going for too long, it starts to spiral. As Yi Do reluctantly plays the part of a normal person with Tae Jeong, unexpected feelings start to emerge. When his orders are to leave no witnesses, Yi Do faces an important decision.

Why it’s worth the watch:
The tension in this show is off the charts, and the mystery‑thriller of it all is actually a fun challenge to piece together. The air truly feels thick and heavy every time the two leads are in the same room, and the vibe shifts into “something bad is about to happen” territory. “The Lie We Lived In” will keep you on edge and guessing what will happen next up to the very last episode.

4. “Sammy’s Children’s Day”

5 BLs Where The Bad Guy And The Good Guy Fall In Love插图14

In “Sammy’s Children’s Day,” a timid but genius university student born in a crime-riddled neighborhood crosses paths with the town’s most notorious gang member. Sparks fly, along with knives, kicks, and punches.

5 BLs Where The Bad Guy And The Good Guy Fall In Love插图15

Set in Hong Kong in the 1980s, He Chu San (He Chang Xi) lives in a dangerous, lawless city where gang activity is normal. Despite where he grew up, Chu San has become the town’s golden boy. Attending a top university, he has genius-level book smarts. His street smarts, however, are maybe not as strong.

Case in point: One night, he walks right into a gang scuffle where Xia Liu Yi (He Yan Zhao) appears, sword-wielding and somehow nonchalantly looking like the coolest person in the world. Liu Yi is the infamous, very feared gangster who doesn’t seem afraid of anything or anyone.

After being in the wrong place at the wrong time, Chu San nearly makes it out without a scratch. Nearly. Instead, he ends up in the belly of the beast, aka Liu Yi’s home base. Liu Yi knows how smart Chu San is because of his neighborhood fame, so he gives Chu San a task that he can’t refuse.

Suddenly, Chu San is forced to be involved in a gang and is being pressured to join as Liu Yi’s newest right-hand. However, Chu San despises gangs and wants nothing to do with them. Liu Yi might be known as the most fearsome gang member in town, but Chu San isn’t so easy to convince.

5 BLs Where The Bad Guy And The Good Guy Fall In Love插图18

Why it’s worth the watch:
The premise of a straight-A student and a violent gang member who’s prince to the gang leader throne is probably already enough to sell you on this show. One guy loves books, the other loves knives — it sounds like the most perfect imperfect pairing if there ever was one. There’s a whole lot more going for this show too, besides the genius pairing of Chu San and Liu Yi. The period setting is super cool, the gang politics raise the stakes, and the show is packed with interesting characters.

5. “Spare Me Your Mercy”

5 BLs Where The Bad Guy And The Good Guy Fall In Love插图19

As mysterious deaths start happening in a small town, a by-the-book cop suspects the town’s beloved doctor is involved despite his kind and caring persona.

Policeman Thiu Wasan (JJ Krissanapoom Pibulsonggram) heads back to his small rural hometown to care for his terminally ill mother, but she passes away before she is expected to. Apparently dying of natural causes, he grows suspicious of the town doctor who handles terminal illnesses and who cared for his mother.

5 BLs Where The Bad Guy And The Good Guy Fall In Love插图20

That doctor is none other than the town’s most adored physician, Doctor Kan (Tor Thanapob Leeratanakachorn). Everyone loves him, but Thiu feels something isn’t right. As he stays in town, he notices an unsettling pattern emerge: more and more terminally ill patients are dying under suspicious circumstances.

While Doctor Kan welcomes Thiu to town and is exceedingly friendly toward him, Thiu’s suspicions only increase. Is something really off about Doctor Kan, or is Thiu chasing the wrong person?

Why it’s worth the watch:
Not to be too on-the-nose, but the mystery of this drama is killer. “Spare Me Your Mercy” is a mind-bending crime mystery that definitely can be categorized as creepy, but in the best way. If you want an uncanny watch with subtle romance that is second to a seriously good plot and storyline, this delivers. Watching this in the dark is a must for the full effect. This show genuinely makes you question what is right, what is wrong, and who gets to decide.

5 Perfect BLs To Watch If You’re Missing “Love Class 3”

If you just finished “Love Class 3” and are now left scrolling through a list of shows, trying to find your next watch that’ll fill that void, you aren’t alone. “Love Class 3” was about idols falling in love while chasing their dreams and navigating the extremely rough world of the K-pop industry. Luckily, there’s more of that already out there in BL to add to your watch list.

Whether you loved the music or the multilingual cast of “Love Class 3,” these are five BL recommendations based on the most iconic parts that made the show so good:

1. For another idol-cast drama: “A Shoulder to Cry on”

5 Perfect BLs To Watch If You’re Missing “Love Class 3”插图

“Love Class 3” wasn’t only about idols and the K-pop industry. It also had real idols as some of the characters, including Lee Woo Jin of GHOST9 and Saebyeol of WAKER. As it happens, K-BLs have had quite a few dramas with idols cast in lead roles, including “A Shoulder to Cry on.”

Though “A Shoulder to Cry on” isn’t about idols, it stars OMEGA X’s Ye Chan and Jae Han as the leads.

5 Perfect BLs To Watch If You’re Missing “Love Class 3”插图1

Da Yeol (Jae Han) is a high school archer who is extremely talented but also a bit of a loner. Focusing only on school and his sport, he has no close friends and has slipped into a lifeless daily routine. Despite his talent, he doesn’t know exactly where his passions lie.

During a chance encounter and a series of unexpected events, Da Yeol ends up on the metaphorical hit list of the school’s golden boy, Tae Hyeon (Ye Chan). Completely opposite to Da Yeol, Tae Hyeon is a social butterfly with everyone, even the teachers, under his spell.

5 Perfect BLs To Watch If You’re Missing “Love Class 3”插图2

Drawn into Tae Hyeon’s world, Da Yeol quickly realizes that Tae Hyeon’s exemplary student act is just that—an act. Now in a sticky situation at school purely because Tae Hyeon wanted to stir up trouble, Da Yeol tries to forget and move on, but Tae Hyeon is nowhere near done messing with Da Yeol.

All of a sudden, Da Yeol’s life is filled with passion, but not in the way he ever expected.

5 Perfect BLs To Watch If You’re Missing “Love Class 3”插图3

Why it’s worth the watch:
This is a classic enemies-to-lovers set up with two guys living in totally different worlds: a bad boy hiding behind a good boy persona and a school outcast who sees right through his act. The line between outright bullying and playful flirting is extremely thin with these two. This is one to watch for an unexpected pairing and chemistry you can feel through the screen, especially if you’re an OMEGA X fan.

2. For another multilingual love story: “Eccentric Romance”

5 Perfect BLs To Watch If You’re Missing “Love Class 3”插图4

The whole dynamic between Khun (Petch Panutuch Saelee) and Jae Min (Lee Woo Jin) in “Love Class 3” was absolutely adorable. Their language differences led to some funny moments of miscommunication, but it also led to a deeper connection. They even started learning each other’s languages to communicate better.

Though cross-cultural casts are generally still rare in K-BL, there are a few more out there, like “Eccentric Romance.” Technically, it is a Korean BL, but one of the two male leads is Thai, and the show’s premise plays into this.

Set at university, the story follows Jay (Save Saisawat), a Thai exchange student, and his Korean friend Sung Hoon (Yoon Jun Won). They’ve always been close and have had this “something more” atmosphere between them, but nothing has ever taken them past friendship.

Things change when the two are enrolled in a “Health and Happiness” class, and they must submit a physical assessment as part of a project. It’s not a love class, but it’s close.

5 Perfect BLs To Watch If You’re Missing “Love Class 3”插图5

While Sung Hoon is already a fitness buff who does sports and exercises frequently, Jay is the sort of person who doesn’t know how to use a single piece of gym equipment. Thanks to the class assignment, Jay suddenly wants to become fit too, so he asks Sung Hoon to take him to the gym and help him train.

Sung Hoon is ecstatic because he thinks this is a chance for them to get closer. But, plot twist, Jay is quickly convinced by a gym trainer to start personal training, leaving Sung Hoon to watch from afar.

5 Perfect BLs To Watch If You’re Missing “Love Class 3”插图6
5 Perfect BLs To Watch If You’re Missing “Love Class 3”插图7

It could be Sung Hoon’s imagination, or jealousy, or a little bit of both, but he picks up weird vibes from Jay’s trainer and decides to investigate. With a murder case being investigated on campus at the same time, there’s definitely something off.

Why it’s worth the watch:
This is a very lighthearted, fun, and funny Korean BL that’s easy to binge in one go. The mini murder mystery thrown in the mix might sound like it doesn’t fit the story, but it somehow works. For an unserious good time, this hits.

3. For another “what are we, really?”: “Something’s Not Right”

5 Perfect BLs To Watch If You’re Missing “Love Class 3”插图8

In “Something’s Not Right,” best friends Ba Woo (Choi Min Ho) and Jee Hoon (Jeong Je Hyeon) are a lot like Hyun Jae (Saebyeol) and Soo An (Seo Ihan) in the way they spend almost the entire show dodging real feelings and trying to answer the age-old BL question: is there really something between us, or are we just friends? In this case, it is largely the show’s whole plot.

Ba Woo and Jee Hoon have been as close as can be since they were kids, and all throughout high school they’ve lingered on that thin line between best friends and lovers. The secret of their suspicious relationship is that Ba Woo has always harbored a crush on Jee Hoon. Besides Jee Hoon being totally clueless, Ba Woo has kept his feelings hidden because he’s afraid to be rejected and to ruin their friendship.

Now that they are in college and their relationship has only gotten more unclear, Ba Woo decides it’s time to cut ties with Jee Hoon and avoid further heartbreak. But from Jee Hoon’s perspective, his best friend suddenly wants to end their relationship and is unwilling to give a reason, and that’s just not good enough for Jee Hoon. Besides being a little clueless about feelings, Jee Hoon is at least extremely persistent.

5 Perfect BLs To Watch If You’re Missing “Love Class 3”插图9
5 Perfect BLs To Watch If You’re Missing “Love Class 3”插图10

While all this is happening, Ba Woo accidentally leaves his diary detailing his one-sided crush at the library, and it ends up in the hands of art student Ha Min (Ji Min Seo). Ha Min, who happens to be on the lookout for a story to illustrate for a manhwa contest, thinks Ba Woo’s real-life story is a work of a genius fiction writer.

While Ba Woo tries to outrun his clingy best friend and one-sided crush, he’s also being chased down by Ha Min, who wants to publicize his story but who also has some pretty good relationship advice. Now it’s up to Ba Woo to find a way to solve both of his unwanted problems.

5 Perfect BLs To Watch If You’re Missing “Love Class 3”插图11

Why it’s worth the watch:
A silly order of events brings two best friends and a stranger into a chaotic story of unrequited love and friendship. The story comes from the unique perspective of Ba Woo; like his character, the viewer only sees his skewed view of Jee Hoon, so viewers are just as unsure as he is about how Jee Hoon really feels.

4. For more love in class: “Love Class 2”

5 Perfect BLs To Watch If You’re Missing “Love Class 3”插图12

“Love Class 2” is a no-brainer recommendation if you loved “Love Class 3.” It’s the second installment in the series, but a standalone story, so you don’t have to worry about watching them all in order. Of all the seasons so far, “Love Class 2” has the most love stories in one, all taking place on campus. All three couples have their own story and their own vibe, but they also intertwine with each other.

The first couple is filled with angst, a little mystery, and a “we can’t cross that line” feeling. It starts when Lee Hyun (Jeon Minwook) grows a crush on his high school tutor, Kim An (Kim Yong Seok). The potential for something romantic is definitely there, but because of the age difference and dynamic, Lee Hyun tries his best to keep their relationship a student-teacher one only.

They never really get to address their feelings because one day, Kim An just disappears. Lee Hyun has been searching for his face in crowds ever since, and one day he finds him sitting in one of his university classes. However, Kim An has changed into someone he doesn’t recognize, but that doesn’t mean he is giving up.

5 Perfect BLs To Watch If You’re Missing “Love Class 3”插图13

The second couple is Min Woo (Woo Hyo Won) and Ma Ru (Lee Kwang Hee). They’re best friends, but Min Woo has a secret crush on Ma Ru. However, Ma Ru might be the very last person to notice. While Ma Ru keeps leaning on Min Woo as his best friend, Min Woo can’t help wanting something more between them.

5 Perfect BLs To Watch If You’re Missing “Love Class 3”插图14

The third and last couple is another teacher-student situation, but this time it’s between a workaholic teaching assistant named Sung Min (Jeong Woo Jae) and a flirtatious undergrad named Ju Hyeok (An Jeong Gyun). Their silly meet-cute sparks Ju Hyeok’s interest in Sung Min, and he starts pursuing him. Sung Min, however, doesn’t get the message.

5 Perfect BLs To Watch If You’re Missing “Love Class 3”插图15

Why it’s worth the watch:
Romance just hits different when it happens in the setting of a college campus. This is for you if you love a multi-couple storyline, killer chemistry, and relationships that are worked for. It’s a super cozy comfort watch where picking your favorite couple of the three is part of the fun.

5. For more music: “First Note of Love”

5 Perfect BLs To Watch If You’re Missing “Love Class 3”插图16

In “First Note of Love,” Sea (Michael Chang) is a timid young man who hides that he is also secretly a popular music prodigy. He’s stayed out of the spotlight until an opportunity to produce music for Neil (Charles Tu) comes along.

5 Perfect BLs To Watch If You’re Missing “Love Class 3”插图17

Neil was super popular in his prime, but he has been on hiatus since losing his brother and bandmate. Still reeling from his loss, Neil wants to give up on his music career, but his team believes he should give it another shot. They set up a meeting between Neil and Sea to get the ball rolling, but the two clash right away.

5 Perfect BLs To Watch If You’re Missing “Love Class 3”插图18

Neil thinks Sea is too shy and inexperienced to work with. He is totally unaware that Sea is, in fact, his biggest fan. Sea has always put his idol on the highest pedestal, but Neil’s first impressions are far from what he had expected. Neil isn’t at all eager to try performing again, but then he hears Sea’s music.

Why it’s worth the watch:
A fanboy and an idol falling in love might be one of the best setups to exist, but it can go either of two ways: really well or really badly. After all, the saying “don’t meet your idols” exists for a reason. Compared to “Love Class 3,” this drama focuses more heavily on the music aspect, and the music is indeed really good. Prepare your tissues: the show explores the difficult and bumpy road to love and healing after a loss.

5 New BLs On Viki To Watch This Pride Month

There might be no better time than Pride Month to start a new BL (or two… or three), and you don’t need to be a BL expert to enjoy one. This is the time to get into BL if you haven’t yet!

The genre serves new releases pretty much nonstop, but this Pride Month in particular has a lot to show off.

June’s lineup includes a thriller K-BL putting two strangers in a high-stakes lying game, the eagerly anticipated Thai BL “Ticket to Heaven,” and the third installment of the OG comfort watch, “Love Class.”

These are five new and exciting BLs you can start watching right now on Viki:

1. “The Lie We Lived In”

5 New BLs On Viki To Watch This Pride Month插图

“The Lie We Lived In” is about a case of mistaken identity that snowballs into an elaborate lie that two men can’t easily escape.

Hired killer Seo Yi Do (Kim Seung Beom) is taking on what should’ve been a quick assignment: eliminate his target, Heo Dong Hwa (Lee Jeong Ho), and leave without a trace. But his orders change mid-operation.

Yi Do must keep Dong Hwa alive until he can track down a hidden phone somewhere in the house. That’s how a simple mission turns into an unplanned hostage situation.

But it’s really not that big a deal because it’s only Yi Do and Dong Hwa in the house anyway, until it isn’t.

5 New BLs On Viki To Watch This Pride Month插图1

Dong Hwa’s best pal, Chu Tae Jeong (Kim Gyeong Min), arrives for a pre-planned week‑long stay, expecting Dong Hwa to be there to welcome him. Instead, it’s Yi Do, who Tae Jong conveniently assumes is Dong Hwa’s older brother from overseas.

5 New BLs On Viki To Watch This Pride Month插图2

Yi Do leans into the lie to keep his true intentions under wraps, but there’s another glaring problem that he soon discovers: Tae Jeong is a police officer. A killer pretending to be someone he’s not and a cop who strongly believes in justice staying in the same house is a recipe for chaos.

That’s when Yi Do gets a second kill order.

5 New BLs On Viki To Watch This Pride Month插图3

Why it’s worth the watch:
K-BLs are branching out in terms of plot and vibe, and this is one of the many to come. If you need a break from clichés and predictable stories, this thriller‑romance hybrid is neither of those things.

The mystery surrounding the hidden phone, Dong Hwa’s strange entanglement with the underworld, and the growing connection between two people who should be on opposite sides of the law make this an exciting watch where you’re never quite sure what’ll happen next.

2. “Love Class 3”

This new rendition of “Love Class” takes place in the world of K-pop, and it starts with an idol survival show, “Next Stage.”

5 New BLs On Viki To Watch This Pride Month插图5

In “Love Class 3,” Hyun Jae (Sae Byeol) and Soo An (Seo Yi Han) are two of the most popular contestants competing to become part of the newest debut group of “Next Stage.” The two quietly grew a real bond while on the show, but eventually the fans noticed their chemistry and their budding attraction.

However real it may have been, it became mixed with fictional fan shipping and fake stories, and it eventually became unclear whether their connection and feelings were real or had become all for show.

5 New BLs On Viki To Watch This Pride Month插图6

The show’s final round of eliminations came down to Soo An and Hyun Jae, two people fans thought would never be separated because of how inseparable they were. In the end, it’s Hyun Jae who is selected to debut with the winning team, leaving Soo An to go back to training alone.

5 New BLs On Viki To Watch This Pride Month插图7

While Hyun Jae becomes busy with his debut, Soo An grows increasingly discouraged about being able to debut and starts to push Hyun Jae away. Even though they lose touch for a bit, all hope isn’t lost.

Suddenly, they get a second chance at debuting together, but their relationship is still wildly unclear.

The second couple of the story is closely intertwined with the first: Jae Min (Lee Woo Jin), Hyun Jae’s close friend and a trainee whose career took a hit after getting involved in a scandal with another boy group member, and Khun (Petch Panutuch Saelee), a young man from Thailand who came to Korea for a restart on his life.

After meeting at school, Jae Min and Khun become increasingly involved in each other’s lives.

Why it’s worth the watch:
Idols in the same group falling in love might sound like only a fantasy in the K‑pop world, but this show explores what might happen when that fantasy meets reality. It shows how a real, genuine connection can get tangled up with fan shipping, rumors, and the pressure to perform for the cameras. For “Love Class” aficionados, this is a no-brainer watch—you have to watch the third if you’ve already checked off “Love Class” and “Love Class 2.”

3. “Ticket to Heaven”

5 New BLs On Viki To Watch This Pride Month插图10

In the heartfelt and heavy story “Ticket to Heaven,” Tanrak’s (Fourth Nattawat Jirochtikul) childhood is struck with tragedy when he loses his parents and becomes an orphan.

In his grief, he turns toward the church, believing that if he devotes his life to faith, he’ll one day reunite with them in heaven. As he gets older, he plans to become a priest after finishing seminary school at the church.

5 New BLs On Viki To Watch This Pride Month插图11

Now a young man with a clear path laid out, Tanrak’s life is disrupted when a new student transfers into the seminary. Barth (Gemini Norawit Titicharoenrak) has been bullied and gotten into fights, earning him a reputation as a troublemaker. Branded as a delinquent, he’s sent to Tanrak’s school.

5 New BLs On Viki To Watch This Pride Month插图12

It’s Tanrak who is tasked with guiding Barth during his transition to this new environment. From the moment they meet, Barth’s rebellious and free-spirited nature both concerns and intrigues Tanrak.

As the two spend more time together, they grow a connection despite appearing to be so different, but what starts to form between them isn’t exactly friendship.

5 New BLs On Viki To Watch This Pride Month插图13

As Tanrak’s feelings for Barth deepen, he starts an unexpected journey of self-discovery, where he finds himself torn between the future he’s always believed in and the desires that have surfaced because of Barth.

Why it’s worth the watch:
This is shaping up to be a heavy watch with complex characters that won’t be for the faint of heart, but it will absolutely hit you in the feelings. Expect a soul-searching, introspective sort of watch that isn’t quite like anything that’s out there yet. Every detail, down to the cinematography, has meaning; see if you can catch the nuances.

4. “A Dog and a Plane”

5 New BLs On Viki To Watch This Pride Month插图14

In “A Dog and a Plane,” an unexpected twist of fate links two guys from different worlds.

Khanit (New Thitipoom Techaapaikhun) is a well-off flight attendant dating a captain, while Toto (Tay Tawan Vihokratana) is an EMT taking care of his younger sister and is constantly strapped for cash. They may be from different tax brackets, but they both give off the same unserious goofball energy.

5 New BLs On Viki To Watch This Pride Month插图16

Khanit and Toto’s first meeting is not great though. They meet in a tiny collision when Khanit’s car drives itself into Toto’s EMT vehicle, which starts their seemingly endless bickering streak. They just met, but they already fight like a married couple of 20 years.

They meet for a second time at the airport, both coincidentally departing for the same location on the same flight. In the chaos of one of their arguments, they accidentally switch luggages, which look exactly the same. It’s only when they get to their hotels that they realize the switch has happened.

This switch forces Khanit to wear one of Toto’s loud, silly beach outfits to his friend’s wedding. Meanwhile, Toto and his two friends decide to take Khanit’s fancy, expensive wardrobe out for a spin in a little makeover montage.

5 New BLs On Viki To Watch This Pride Month插图19

Khanit tracks down Toto right as he and his EMT pals get into a scuffle with some foes. During this fight, all of Khanit’s precious belongings are ruined.

Now Toto owes Khanit money he doesn’t have, but Khanit quickly thinks up a solution. He proposes a single task for Toto to repay his debt: to investigate his boyfriend, who he suspects is cheating.

5 New BLs On Viki To Watch This Pride Month插图20

Why it’s worth the watch:
The whole premise of “A Dog and a Plane” feels very much rom-com coded, and you can tell from the opening scene how unserious, random, and fun it’s going to be. You know how the saying goes: the first meeting is chance, the second is a coincidence, and the third means fate is officially clocking in. Well, fate is definitely taking the wheel of this story.

5. “Double Helix”

5 New BLs On Viki To Watch This Pride Month插图21

The love story of “Double Helix” follows two men from childhood to adulthood as their relationship is tested again and again by the pressures around them. The only thing that never changes? How they feel about each other.

Meeting in high school, studious student Cheng Yi Chen (Lv Si Tong) and wealthy playboy Lu Feng (Ayden Sng) get the chance to explore their attraction when they reunite in college.

Without hesitation, Lu Feng goes all out in pursuing the shy Yi Chen. It takes some time and work, but he eventually moves his heart, and they fall deeply in love.

They promise to spend forever together, but forever isn’t easy, especially when the society around you doesn’t support your version of love.

Just as they’re at their happiest, a picture of them together starts circling around campus, and things get messy fast. They put up a fight at first, but Lu Feng is ultimately shipped away overseas by his father, and Yi Chen is left alone.

Years later, another chance at love comes there, but it won’t be any easier.

5 New BLs On Viki To Watch This Pride Month插图24

This time around, Lu Feng suddenly shows up one day as Yi Chen’s boss. They try to act as if their love is in the past, but it doesn’t work for long.

The attraction is still so clearly there, but so are the obstacles: Lu Feng’s strict father, public scrutiny, and now their careers.

Why it’s worth the watch:
The chemistry between Lu Feng and Yi Chen will seriously have you verbally saying, “dang, so THIS is love,” so many times. If you’re looking for a true love story and you’re ready to accept that some loves don’t come easy, this is a rollercoaster you’ll enjoy riding.

By now, “Love Class” has transformed into a full multi-season K‑BL world of its own, but it all started with a simple college assignment that accidentally led two strangers on campus to fall in love. With “Love Class 3” airing right now, it’s the perfect time to revisit where the whole story began.

5 Short But Sweet BLs To Watch During A Busy Pride Month插图1

In the first “Love Class,” a kind but socially awkward freshman named Cha Ji Wu (Han Hyun Jun) gets the chance to pair up with his crush during a “love” project, but a twist of fate lands him with a stranger as a partner, who also happens to be a guy.

Ji Wu enters college hoping to meet a few friends (he’s starting at a solid zero) and make the most of the “college experience,” even though he hasn’t quite figured out how to talk to people yet.

During a freshman outing, he meets fellow student Bae Yu Na (Ryu In A) and immediately develops a crush.

5 Short But Sweet BLs To Watch During A Busy Pride Month插图2

Ji Wu gets a chance to get to know Yu Na when the two end up in the same class, and everyone must pair up for a marriage and family assignment. The assignment calls for students to form couples and enter a mock relationship.

But his plan is almost immediately shot down when a student brings up a very valid, very important-to-the-plot point: why can’t she pair up with another girl? And it’s Yu Na who chimes in and agrees with her, mostly because she is shy and wants to be with another girl over a guy. The two girls pair up, fighting the system like the icons they are, but Ji Wu’s dreams are crushed in the process.

This turn of events, plus the male majority in the class, leads Ji Wu to instead pair up with another dude, Lee Ro Ah (Kim Tae Hwan). Ji Wu is both in shock and hilariously unsure of how to act around his new partner.

Given a budget and time frame, the task is simple (or it’s supposed to be): go on dates and get to know your partner.

It sounds like the perfect recipe for romance, but the awkward and kind-hearted Ji Wu didn’t intend to be paired with another guy, let alone this cool and confident older student whom he doesn’t know at all.

5 Short But Sweet BLs To Watch During A Busy Pride Month插图5

Why it’s worth the watch:
Watching this adorable, awkward, outcast of a college student try to fit in and chase his girl crush while simultaneously catching the eye of a guy is peak BL chaos. For anyone who’s ever felt a little out of sync with everyone else, it’s hard not to completely fall in love with Ji Wu and root for him. As a bonus, among all the feel-good, silly fluff of this show is a tiny slice of a who-dunnit thriller that balances it all out. And when you finish this short but sweet BL, don’t worry because there’s “Love Class 2” and “Love Class 3” waiting for you.

2. “Something’s Not Right”

In “Something’s Not Right,” something really isn’t right between best friends Ba Woo (Choi Min Ho) and Jee Hoon (Jeong Je Hyeon).

5 Short But Sweet BLs To Watch During A Busy Pride Month插图6

The opening scene starts with a big blow: leading man Ba Woo tells his longtime childhood friend Jee Hoon, “let’s cut ties,” and walks away. Ba Woo gives no explanation to Jee Hoon, but it’s soon revealed why he’s acting this way.

The truth is that Ba Woo has had a secret crush on Jee Hoon since they were in high school, and it’s been an endlessly confusing rollercoaster of emotions for Ba Woo.

5 Short But Sweet BLs To Watch During A Busy Pride Month插图7

Jee Hoon’s overly attached nature toward Ba Woo has forced Ba Woo to stay in a confusing limbo between wondering if he has a chance and wondering if Jee Hoon only sees him as a childhood friend. Even their other friends think the way Jee Hoon acts around Ba Woo is odd for “just friends,” but Jee Hoon is oblivious.

Now in college together, Ba Woo is ready to call it quits on his crush, even if it means ending their friendship. He’s tired of keeping his true feelings a secret and always wondering if Jee Hoon will find out.

However, Ba Woo’s plans to cut ties go awry when he meets another student, Ha Min (Ji Min Seo). Ha Min happens to be looking for a story to illustrate for a manhwa contest. As BL-fate would have it, the story is about unrequited love, but Mr. popular Ha Min has no clue what that’s like (his words!).

Desperate to find a story, Ha Min stumbles upon a book left at the library. The book? Ba Woo’s diary, of course, where he chronicles his entire one-sided crush with Jee Hoon. Ha Min mistakes it for fiction and confronts Ba Woo, requesting to use his story.

5 Short But Sweet BLs To Watch During A Busy Pride Month插图12

Ba Woo understandably isn’t keen on having his real-life story displayed to the general public, but Ha Min starts giving him ideas on how to move the story along. That gets Ba Woo thinking.

Ba Woo is so determined to move on from his crush in any way possible since nothing else has worked, so he reluctantly agrees to work with Ha Min to finish his story and find closure. Little does Ha Min know that the plot of Ba Woo’s “fictional” story is way too real, and Ba Woo is taking his advice and applying it in real life.

Why it’s worth the watch:
If you live for a friends-to-lovers storyline where it takes a little back-and-forth and jealousy before the two friends decide to act on the “something more” between them, then this will give you that addictive trope. This show really captures the complicated feelings that can arise when there’s something more between two friends, but they aren’t on the same page about it at all.

Fair warning, when Ba Woo’s diary is conveniently found by what might be one of the greenest flags of all K-BL time, Ha Min, the second lead syndrome will hit you so hard. Does Ba Woo end up with the right guy? Watch and decide for yourself!

If you happen to love “Boys Be Brave!” this has similar vibes.

3. “Love Begins in the World of If”

5 Short But Sweet BLs To Watch During A Busy Pride Month插图16

A quiet office worker gets everything he wishes for — literally — in “Love Begins in the World of If” when one small wish rewrites the details of his entire life.

Kano Akihito (Daigo Kotaro) is an office worker stuck in an unfufilling career and colorless life. At work, he was moved to a department where he doesn’t belong, where everyone seems to be plotting against him, especially the department’s ace employee, Ogami Seiji (Nakagawa Daisuke).

Despite how hard Kano works, Ogami barely acknowledges him, that is, unless he’s telling him what he has done wrong.

5 Short But Sweet BLs To Watch During A Busy Pride Month插图17
5 Short But Sweet BLs To Watch During A Busy Pride Month插图18

Kano’s overwhelming anxiety and stress are causing him literal panic attacks at this point, and a major mistake at work nearly pushes him over the edge.

Worn down and desperate for something to change, Akihito stops by a shrine and makes a simple wish: to get along with the people at work and to be recognized by Ogami.

5 Short But Sweet BLs To Watch During A Busy Pride Month插图19

That wish stays simple for about 30 seconds, after which Ogami shows up out of nowhere, offering Kano a helping hand. It’s like he is a totally different version of himself, and that’s because he most definitely is.

The next day, Kano realizes it’s not just Ogami that has changed. Everything is different. Ogami is no longer serious and cold but is instead warm and attentive toward Kano, and his coworkers now treat him with respect and admiration.

5 Short But Sweet BLs To Watch During A Busy Pride Month插图20

Later, Kano returns to the shrine to make sense of what’s happening. He’s told about a myth in which people who have visited the shrine end up in a world where they have become their ideal selves. Akihito quickly puts together that it isn’t just a myth and that it has happened to him.

5 Short But Sweet BLs To Watch During A Busy Pride Month插图21

Now in a parallel version of his own life, he has become his ideal self, living a reality he had only dreamed of living. But is everything really better in this perfect version of his other life? Kano will soon find out.

Why it’s worth the watch:
“Love Begins in the World of If” leans into a poetic and artistic feel, and it delivers a story that feels big and meaningful in such a small package (it’s borderline too short). With just six 20-minute episodes, it’s the quickest watch on this list, but it might just pack the biggest punch.

The “ideal” world Akihito lands in looks perfect at first glance; it’s brighter, happier, and exactly what he said he wanted, but the longer he stays in it, he notices something is off. It has that same eerie vibe as the other world of “Coraline,” where everything seems great until you start paying attention.

4. “See Your Love”

5 Short But Sweet BLs To Watch During A Busy Pride Month插图22

What starts as a street scuffle in “See Your Love” ends up pulling an aspiring caretaker who is deaf into the life of a business heir who could use someone taking care of him. If anything, this show knows perfect timing.

5 Short But Sweet BLs To Watch During A Busy Pride Month插图23

Upon returning to Taiwan, Zi Xiang (Radien Lin) immediately gets caught in a street fight with a group of hired men. In his line of work as a wealthy company heir, he has enemies inside and outside of the business, but targeting him right when he gets to town is definitely evil. Zi Xiang is all alone until a passerby sees the fight and comes to the rescue.

His savior is Shao Peng (Jin Yun). Shao Peng is a young deaf man determined to work in caretaking, even though he has had zero luck getting hired. He’s clearly qualified, but most people can’t get past the fact that he doesn’t communicate the same way hearing people do.

While Shao Peng helps Zi Xiang escape his attackers in a chase that turns into a high-stakes game of hide-and-seek, Zi Xiang makes it out alive but injured.

5 Short But Sweet BLs To Watch During A Busy Pride Month插图24
5 Short But Sweet BLs To Watch During A Busy Pride Month插图25

Though he’ll most definitely be fine with a doctor visit and some rest, this creates the perfect setup for him needing a caretaker. The following day, it’s none other than Shao Peng who shows up outside Zi Xiang’s door.

When Zi Xiang finally figures out that Shao Peng can’t hear, a light bulb goes off. Zi Xiang schemes up a plan that works perfectly for him: get an in-house caretaker who won’t be able to overhear conversations and spill company secrets. After the street fight that took place, there are clearly some security issues going on.

But Shao Peng will take some convincing before he works for a complete stranger, especially after catching him in such a dodgy situation.

5 Short But Sweet BLs To Watch During A Busy Pride Month插图27

Why it’s worth the watch:
This heartfelt and warm love story feels like a comforting hug in the form of a drama. If there were ever two people who felt meant to be, it’d be Zi Xiang and Shao Peng. Seeing both gradually find a safe place, love, and acceptance in each other makes it really feel like a perfect ending is possible. If you want a show that’ll make you smile ear to ear and occasionally tear up, look no further.

5.”You Are Mine”

5 Short But Sweet BLs To Watch During A Busy Pride Month插图28

“You Are Mine” is a workplace BL that leans into the classic grumpy boss meets innocent new hire setup and has a lot of unserious fun with it.

When no one wants to work with the office’s most feared manager, he gets stuck with the new guy who has a lot of heart but also no idea what he’s doing.

5 Short But Sweet BLs To Watch During A Busy Pride Month插图29

First day on the job, and Yao Shun Yu (Hsiao Hung) is given the task that everyone else in the office avoids: working as the secretary for the impeccably dressed but notoriously picky and mean manager Xia Shang Zhou (Mao Chi Sheng).

5 Short But Sweet BLs To Watch During A Busy Pride Month插图30

Everyone in the office who has had to work for Shang Zhou has either spent the day crying or secretly begged to be reassigned, which is exactly why the entire office is scheming behind the scenes to shove Shun Yu into the role.

The problem on top of it all is that Shun Yu came into the job under the guise of a different role, so he’s woefully underprepared. He has no clue how the manager’s fancy coffee machine works, and he’s slow at taking notes, but the things he does have are perseverance and a very adorable smile.

5 Short But Sweet BLs To Watch During A Busy Pride Month插图31

Basically, Shun Yu isn’t giving up without giving his all first, even after being knocked down multiple times on his first day. The guy has to pay his bills after all.

Just imagine finally getting accepted for a job you thought you’d never get, only to show up for a totally different role and with a scary boss as icing on the cake. But also, that same boss happens to be gorgeous to a distracting degree? Shun Yu still somehow faces this nightmare of a situation with a smile.

5 Short But Sweet BLs To Watch During A Busy Pride Month插图32
5 Short But Sweet BLs To Watch During A Busy Pride Month插图33

Will the clumsy soft boy with a kind smile and fighting spirit melt the manager’s ice-covered heart? Also, will Shun Yu be able to accomplish all the miscellaneous and sometimes very personal work requests the manager gives him? More importantly, where is HR?

Why it’s worth the watch:
“You Are Mine” is an unserious and loveably cheesy workplace rom-com, full of office shenanigans and funny characters. It’s really the perfect pairing: a kind guy trying to keep his first real job and a serious manager who could use a little ray of sunshine in his life.

Office romance in the BL world is virtually unavoidable at this point, but it always means a fun time, usually with multiple NSFW situations and events that should probably be brought up to HR but never are. The short reality-TV-style confessional interview bits that the show includes with the characters are super fun too.

5 BLs Where Pretending Becomes Something Real

If you kept track of every BL where “just pretend” became real feelings, you’d have a long list by now.

In these BLs, secret identities, hidden agendas, lies that spiral out of control, and messy revenge plans all have one thing in common: someone always ends up catching real feelings.

If you love watching a character fake their way into a situation only to “accidentally” fall for the person they’re fooling, these five BLs are for you.

Warning: light spoilers ahead!

1. “Wishing Upon the Shooting Stars”

5 BLs Where Pretending Becomes Something Real插图

After losing his job, the pressures of adulthood and the fact that he has never achieved his dream of becoming an artist hit He Xiang Yong (Jed Chung). Without anywhere else to go, he returns to his close-knit seaside town, where he’s reminded again of all he hasn’t achieved.

On a night at sea with his old friend Wan Zhe (Yu Chieh En), he wishes under a starry sky that he could become someone different. When he wakes up, he finds out his wish came true.

5 BLs Where Pretending Becomes Something Real插图1

No one recognizes Xiang Yong except for his friend, whose own wish to fall in love is soon to find him too. With Wan Zhe’s help, he takes a shot at starting a new life as someone different, but things get more complicated.

Xiang Yong’s pretending only gets him so far when his childhood classmate and crush, Hao Wei (Chu Meng Hsuan), starts working at his father’s inn. Despite being unrecognizable to Hao Wei, being around each other rekindles unresolved romantic feelings that never quite got the chance to take off.

As Xiang Yong tries to convince others that he’s someone else, he must choose between the freedom of a new identity or a second chance at love.

Why it’s worth the watch:
It turns out wishing upon stars in this town works a little too well, and both Xiang Yong and Wan Zhe are forced to face the after-effects of wishes they made without much thought. This show is surprisingly funny just as much as it is heartwarming, relatable, and comforting for young adults.

2. “To My Shore”

5 BLs Where Pretending Becomes Something Real插图4

In “To My Shore,” a troubled, cunning business heir who finds joy in playing with people starts an elaborate string of lies with a man he meets by chance.

Fan Xiao (Yun Qi) is a ruthless, wealthy man who is bored, indifferent, and cold. He’s all about playing games and making pawns of people, and he finds his next amusement in You Shu Lang (Hao Yi Ran) and his boyfriend.

5 BLs Where Pretending Becomes Something Real插图5

He meets Shu Lang during a small car accident where Shu Lang hits Fan Xiao’s bumper. Fan Xiao hides his annoyance and plays it off like it’s no big deal (he’s even nice about it), but this ignites a deep curiosity inside him.

5 BLs Where Pretending Becomes Something Real插图6

After running into Shu Lang yet again, he decides to investigate Fan Xiao and learns about his work and his partner, who he’s surprised to discover is a man. His initial curiosity quickly transforms into an obsession, but the man he’s chasing isn’t entirely what he seems either.

Why it’s worth the watch:
If you like morally gray characters and a “final boss” figure becoming soft for someone, this delivers. Fan Xiao is a character who makes you question if he’s good or bad and keeps you guessing, because you never know if he’s being genuine or just playing with the situation. There’s no fluff here, only intensity, drama, and a heaping pile of red flags.

3. “My Bias is Showing?!”

5 BLs Where Pretending Becomes Something Real插图7

In “My Bias is Showing?!” a teacher who has successfully hidden his fanboy side is caught off guard when his bias starts filming a variety show at his school and chooses him as his filming partner.

5 BLs Where Pretending Becomes Something Real插图8

Na Ae Jun (OMEGA X’s Kevin) has perfected the art of pretending he’s a normal Korean language teacher, but the truth is that he’s a diehard fan of K-pop group A‑ONE. All his students and his coworkers think he’s a calm and collected guy, but when he gets home and out of his work clothes, he turns into a fanboy.

His secret is well kept until Choi Si Yeol (Kim Kang Min), A‑ONE’s center and Ae Jun’s bias, comes to Ae Jun’s school to film a variety show. For the show, Si Yeol needs to pair with a teacher, and he insists on Ae Jun being his partner.

5 BLs Where Pretending Becomes Something Real插图9

It’s hard enough for Ae Jun to keep his inner fanboy hidden now that his bias is right in front of him, but now he has to work with him every day.

Why it’s worth the watch:
It’s so funny and relatable to watch Ae Jun fighting off his intrusive thoughts as a dedicated fanboy on a daily basis when his idol is within arm’s reach. He really has to fake it until he makes it, but Si Yeol doesn’t make it easy. This drama is so fun, lighthearted, and feel-good, but as the story progresses, you’ll find there’s actually a lot more going on behind the scenes.

4. “Meet You at the Blossom”

5 BLs Where Pretending Becomes Something Real插图10

In the wuxia BL “Meet You at the Blossom,” a misunderstanding and a secret agenda bring two very different men together as they try to survive in the high-stakes world of ancient China.

5 BLs Where Pretending Becomes Something Real插图11

Jin Xiao Bao (Wang Yun Kai) is a young master who lives a carefree, sheltered life as part of a prominent, wealthy family. He is a playboy at heart and obsessed with beauty. He thinks he has finally found the most stunning woman he has ever seen when he stumbles upon Zheng Huai En (Leslie Li) fighting off attackers in the woods.

5 BLs Where Pretending Becomes Something Real插图12

Huai En’s looks are truly out of this world, so Xiao Bao immediately decides this is the woman he wants to marry. There’s only one itty bitty problem: Huai En is not a woman.

Despite his annoyance at the idea of a relationship with the flirtatious Xiao Bao, Huai En plays along and uses it to slip into Xiao Bao’s household for his own secret mission. While he is faking his identity to get what he needs, Xiao Bao becomes an unexpected obstacle because he refuses to stop pursuing Huai En.

5 BLs Where Pretending Becomes Something Real插图13

Why its worth the watch:
As a gender-bender wuxia Chinese BL, “Meet You at the Blossom” is literally the first of its kind. The contrast between the leads and the unexpected slow burn amidst lies, espionage, and secret plots makes for a love story that feels epic (it is visually epic too!). If you enjoy the aesthetics and worldbuilding of Chinese fantasy dramas, this packs the same punch but in a more manageable 12 episodes.

5. “Revenged Love”

5 BLs Where Pretending Becomes Something Real插图14

A poorly planned revenge plot goes awry in “Revenged Love” when a heartbroken guy goes after his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend and sparks fly.

The story starts with Wu Suo Wei (Zi Yu), fresh from heartbreak after his longtime girlfriend breaks up with him because he’s broke and hasn’t maintained his appearance. She wants to hold luxury bags and be doted on like all her friends, so she kicks Suo Wei to the curb.

5 BLs Where Pretending Becomes Something Real插图15

Despite trying to get her back after a makeover, it doesn’t convince her. Suo Wei’s pity party spirals into an elaborate revenge plan when he sees his ex has already started seeing a new man named Chi Chang (Tian Xu Ning).

Chi Chang is a wealthy stoic man who doesn’t care about much outside of his snakes. While he only starts dating to get his pushy parents off his back, Suo Wei feels betrayed to see his ex move on so quickly.

5 BLs Where Pretending Becomes Something Real插图16

To get payback, he teams up with a new friend (Liu Xuan Cheng) who gives him advice on seducing a man and helps him reinvent himself. What follows are fabricated meetings and sneaky plans to steal his ex’s new lover, but he’s not really the expert on revenge plans.

5 BLs Where Pretending Becomes Something Real插图17

Why it’s worth the watch:
Catching real feelings while caught in a lie is tricky business. This revenge plot is silly and fun, and the contrast between Suo Wei’s goofiness and Chi Chang’s unbothered exterior makes them a surprisingly funny pair. If you liked “To My Shore” or “Desire the Series,” this hits similar notes, though this one is more lighthearted and funny.
