3 Heartwarming Moments From The Finale Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”

The final episodes of “The Legend of Kitchen Soldier” ended with the loyalty of the soldiers towards not only Gangrim Outpost, but to each other as well.

After Kang Sung Jae (Park Ji Hoon) declares that the soldiers were receiving substandard ingredients and food and is backed by Platoon leader Cho Ye Rin (Han Dong Hee), the outpost is put in danger. Battalion Commander Baek Chun Ik (Jung Woong In) orders its closure, deeming it unsafe, and is backed by Hwang Seok Ho (Lee Sang Yi).

As the days leading to the closure draw near, Sung Jae decides to enter a cooking competition in a bid to save Gangrim Outpost. But it seems the fate of Gangrim cannot be resolved by a competition alone and depends on the support and decision of the senior officers.

The soldiers, who have come to regard the outpost as a home away from home, come together even as the challenges facing them seem insurmountable. These were the heartwarming moments from the finale, as the soldiers defied all odds and had each other’s backs.

Warning: spoilers for the episodes below.

Cooking up hope

Sung Jae and Dong Hyun (Lee Hong Nae) may have successfully pleaded Ye Rin’s case with the regiment commander after she was unjustly investigated, but the mood at Gangrim remains somber as the outpost faces closure in 14 days.

The soldiers try to reassure one another that being merged with headquarters won’t be so bad, but it is clear they are mourning more than just a place. The thought of leaving behind the bonds they have built weighs heavily on everyone. In perhaps the sweetest running joke of all, the soldiers unanimously lament one thing: they will no longer get to enjoy Sung Jae’s cooking.

Unable to sit back and watch Gangrim disappear, Sung Jae comes up with an ambitious plan to enter a military cooking competition judged by both the regiment commander and division commander. But true to his character, he refuses to do it alone.

3 Heartwarming Moments From The Finale Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图1

Sung Jae ropes in Dong Hyun and Kim Gwan Chul (Kang Ha Kyung), proving once again that one of his biggest strengths has never been cooking, but bringing people together. Dong Hyun understands exactly why Sung Jae is fighting so hard. Gangrim is where he found a sense of belonging, and seeing it disappear so unjustly is something he cannot accept.

The odds are certainly stacked against them. Their biggest rival is previous winner and ace chef Lee Ho Yeong (Oh Seung Baek) from the officers’ mess. Yet Sung Jae’s attitude is refreshingly simple: even if they fail, at least they will know they tried.

3 Heartwarming Moments From The Finale Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图2

Their choice of dish, Kalguksu ragu pasta, perfectly mirrors Gangrim itself, blending different influences into something unexpectedly harmonious. Sung Jae assigns everyone roles based on their strengths, asking Dong Hyun to knead the dough and Gwan Chul to put his knife skills to use. With the rest of the soldiers helping with timing and taste tests, the preparation quickly turns into a celebration of Gangrim’s camaraderie.

One of the most touching moments comes during their final meal together at the outpost. Amid tears and laughter, the soldiers reminisce about Dong Hyun’s disastrous meals, their endless squabbles, and Sung Jae’s unforgettable dishes. It is a reminder that Gangrim was never simply a post, but a family.

The competition itself is fierce, and Lee Ho Yeong’s impressive culinary skills make him the favorite. However, in a surprising turn of events, Gangrim and Lee Ho Yeong end up tied as winners.

3 Heartwarming Moments From The Finale Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图3

But there’s another unexpected twist. The Guardian announces that it is time to leave because Sung Jae has failed his original quest of saving Gangrim, meaning he must now rely entirely on himself.

Can he do it? For someone who has always credited the Guardian rather than his own talent, Sung Jae’s biggest challenge may not be saving Gangrim, but finally believing in himself. And with Dong Hyun and Gwan Chul choosing him as their representative, their hopeful faces suggest they already know what Sung Jae has yet to realize.

Sung Jae steps up

3 Heartwarming Moments From The Finale Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图4

The tie announcement leaves Baek Chun Ik far from pleased, as he has always regarded Gangrim as a thorn in his side. But the bigger battle is unfolding within Sung Jae himself. With the Guardian announcing its departure and telling him he can no longer rely on it, Sung Jae is suddenly overcome with anxiety.

Dong Hyun and Gwan Chul notice his unease but brush it off as nerves and Sung Jae’s tendency to space out. In reality, he is grappling with a much bigger question: can he do this on his own?

3 Heartwarming Moments From The Finale Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图5

With less than an hour to prepare his final dish, Sung Jae completely blanks out. For the first time, there is no Guardian, no quest, and no easy answer. But as his inner voice reminds him, it was never the Guardian who cooked those meals in the first place. It was always him.

Just as he begins chopping ingredients, his signature pink knife breaks. What initially feels ominous is actually symbolic. Everything the Guardian brought into his life is slowly leaving, forcing Sung Jae to finally recognize his own potential.

In one of the drama’s most touching moments, he imagines his father telling him that a true chef is made through trials, burns, cuts, and failures. As he soaks the rice, another lesson resurfaces: rice is the foundation of every meal, so he should cook what he himself wants to eat.

While Lee Ho Yeong prepares an elaborate fare, Sung Jae goes in the opposite direction, opting for a humble meal of rice and kimchi stew. At first, the officers are unimpressed by the simplicity of it all. But the moment they take a bite, something shifts. Tears stream down the faces of the regiment commander, division commander, and even Baek Chun Ik as the food evokes memories of home, childhood, and their mothers.

3 Heartwarming Moments From The Finale Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图6

Sung Jae’s explanation is beautifully simple: soldiers posted far away from home crave warmth, comfort, and family, and that is exactly what he wanted his dish to represent. There is admiration in Lee Ho Yeong’s eyes as Sung Jae proves simplicity is the most enriching ingredient in a dish.

It is a fitting victory because Sung Jae was never someone who relied on strategy or grand plans. In losing the Guardian, he unknowingly finds himself. The timid rookie who constantly underestimated his abilities is finally beginning to believe he has what it takes to become a chef.

3 Heartwarming Moments From The Finale Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图7
3 Heartwarming Moments From The Finale Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图8

And perhaps that is the drama’s greatest takeaway. Sometimes stepping up is not about becoming someone new, but realizing you were capable all along.

The final countdown

3 Heartwarming Moments From The Finale Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图9

As Sung Jae and his comrades work tirelessly to save Gangrim, Hwang Seok Ho’s prolonged silence and compliance with Baek Chun Ik’s plans have been increasingly irksome. His inability to stand up for Ye Rin and protect the battalion in the face of adversity marks a significant fall from grace. In many ways, his journey reinforces one of the drama’s strongest messages: leadership is not defined by rank, but by the courage to act when it matters most. While everyone around him fights tooth and nail to save Gangrim, Hwang Seok Ho remains an enigma. Is it guilt, helplessness, or simply weakness?

After witnessing Baek Chun Ik throw Lee Min Gu (Han Min) under the bus and have him imprisoned over fraudulent dealings, Hwang Seok Ho finally begins to question everything. He points out that while Min Gu was certainly ambitious, he was never motivated by money.

The turning point comes when he stumbles upon a file on vendors in Baek Chun Ik’s office. It immediately reminds him of his former senior and Ye Rin’s mentor, one of the most honest and dependable officers, who had begun investigating Baek Chun Ik before being mysteriously killed and framed.

At that moment, Hwang Seok Ho’s conscience finally catches up with him. He can no longer pretend he hasn’t seen what he has seen. Joining forces with the major sergeant, he begins gathering evidence against Baek Chun Ik and reports his findings to his superiors. It’s also a reminder that growth doesn’t always come easily. Sometimes self discovery is uncomfortable, forcing people to confront the very flaws they have spent years ignoring.

In doing so, Hwang Seok Ho knowingly throws away his chances at a promotion, realizing that ambition and greed are two very different things. Ironically, this is the first time he truly earns the respect that his position was supposed to command all along. In his own quiet way of apologizing, he tells Ye Rin to always stand up and speak the truth, while thanking Sung Jae for becoming the role model he himself failed to be.

With Gangrim back in business and Sung Jae now in charge, things finally seem to be falling into place. But there is one lingering thread left to tie up.

3 Heartwarming Moments From The Finale Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图13

Min Ah (Jeon So Young) returns to the barracks to report on Sung Jae’s award. Gathering every ounce of courage, Sung Jae gently holds her hand and sheepishly admits that he never confessed because he never believed he was good enough.

3 Heartwarming Moments From The Finale Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图14
3 Heartwarming Moments From The Finale Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图15

More than a romantic payoff, this moment feels like the culmination of Sung Jae’s entire journey. The man who once questioned his own worth has finally learned to believe in himself.

3 Heartwarming Moments From The Finale Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图16

Perhaps that is what makes these final episodes so satisfying. Rather than simply defeating a villain, the drama chooses to focus on growth, redemption, and second chances. Whether it is Sung Jae, Hwang Seok Ho, or Ye Rin, every character discovers that true strength lies not in titles or recognition, but in integrity, courage, and becoming the person they were always capable of being.

3 Moments That Showed Camaraderie In Episodes 9-10 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”

In the latest episodes, things are well at the Gangrim Outpost. The soldiers have survived the typhoon, rebuilt the bridge, and everyone is getting along with each other.

Kang Sung Jae’s (Park Ji Hoon) culinary fame has travelled far and wide, and his comrades are proud to have him as one of theirs. However, there seems to be a hint of trouble which could blow up into something beyond their control.

Platoon Leader Cho Ye Rin (Han Dong Hee) has been investigating the fake vendors and suppliers in charge of kitchen supplies. Fearing she could be onto something, Major Han Min (Lee Min Gu) manipulates the situation and gets Ye Rin into trouble. This is when Sung Jae, along with Dong Hyun (Lee Hong Nae), devise a plan, albeit at the risk of their own careers.

Here are three defining moments from the latest episodes of “The Legend of Kitchen Soldier” which proved the soldiers are true comrades amidst the conflict.

The japchae test

3 Moments That Showed Camaraderie In Episodes 9-10 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图

One of the intriguing developments this week is Sung Jae being promoted to the rank of intermediate chef and gaining the ability to gauge an individual’s gourmet abilities. While the Guardian nudges him along with hints and prompts, Sung Jae continues to rely on his own instincts and hard work. It is this sincerity that has carried him this far. Unlike many around him, he never appears motivated by ambition alone, nor does he possess the kind of overconfidence that often precedes a fall.

That sincerity is tested when Hwang Seok Ho (Lee Sang Yi) assigns him to prepare a dish for a banquet hosted by Battalion Commander Baek Chun Ik (Jung Woong In). With the menu already fixed and the kitchen staff less than welcoming, Sung Jae finds himself relegated to the pantry. Faced with an elaborate spread being prepared by seasoned chefs, he takes the opposite route and decides to keep things simple with japchae.

3 Moments That Showed Camaraderie In Episodes 9-10 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图1

For perhaps the first time, Sung Jae has access to fresh, premium ingredients instead of the substandard supplies his unit routinely receives. But the dish stubbornly refuses to come together until he discovers the wild pine mushrooms. The head chef tells him to pull the mushrooms apart rather than chop them. It is a small culinary lesson, but one that ultimately transforms the dish. The head chef’s resistance towards Sung Jae was momentary, since he noticed the conviction with which he was working.

3 Moments That Showed Camaraderie In Episodes 9-10 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图2

However, the real story is not the japchae. It is what happens after the regiment commander praises it. In typical Sung Jae fashion, he attributes the success not to his own talent but to the quality of the ingredients. While Han Min dismisses the claim, Chun Ik glares at Hwang Seok Ho. Ye Rin immediately backs Sung Jae, confirming what everyone already knows but few are willing to acknowledge: that the base has long been supplied with inferior produce and there is a disparity between the officers and the soldiers’ mess.

3 Moments That Showed Camaraderie In Episodes 9-10 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图3

The moment exposes several truths at once. Ye Rin once again proves she is willing to speak up regardless of the consequences, while Sung Jae’s honesty remains refreshingly intact. More revealing, however, is Hwang Seok Ho’s reaction. Rather than supporting Ye Rin, he silences her. For a man still smarting from being overlooked for promotion, self preservation takes precedence over principle. It is perhaps the clearest indication yet that when his interests are threatened, Seok Ho will choose caution over conviction.

The regiment commander’s praise may have begun with a plate of japchae, but the dish quickly becomes a test of character. While Sung Jae and Ye Rin choose honesty despite the risks, others are far more concerned with protecting their own interests. In the end, the japchae exposes far more than culinary talent. It reveals who is willing to stand by the truth when it matters.

Gangrim Outpost under fire

3 Moments That Showed Camaraderie In Episodes 9-10 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图4

The japchae incidet has exposed cracks in the system. The regiment commander has asked for an investigation. Being an honest officer, he abhors disparity in the military, especially when it comes to food.

Han Min wastes little time in attempting to contain the fallout. The very next day, he arrives at Gangrim Outpost for a sudden inspection, catching everyone off guard. What follows is less an inspection and more an exercise in intimidation. Han Min seems determined to find fault regardless of whether any actually exists, scrutinizing every aspect of the outpost and making it abundantly clear that he has already reached his conclusions.

His attention is not solely focused on the condition of the outpost. He is equally interested in Ye Rin. Having learned that she had independently visited the food suppliers’ site and found it was a run down warehouse, Han Min openly questions her about it. Ye Rin, never one to be intimidated, responds by asking whether he has been spying on her. The remark visibly irritates him, but it also reinforces what viewers have increasingly begun to suspect: Han Min is far too invested in controlling the narrative surrounding the investigation.

The episode also hints at a larger conspiracy at play. Han Min is eager to obtain the diary belonging to Ye Rin’s senior, who had previously been looking into the matter. The possibility that he and Battalion Commander Baek Chun Ik are working in tandem becomes harder to ignore with each passing scene.

What makes the sequence particularly frustrating is that Gangrim Outpost has become a target. Rather than addressing the concerns being raised, Han Min chooses to attack the people raising them. By the end of the inspection, he declares that the outpost should be shut down, effectively punishing those stationed there while sidestepping the questions that started the investigation in the first place. It is also Hwang Seok Ho’s inability to stand up, which is far more frustrating. The only one at Gangrim, other than the soldiers, is Ye Rin, who is fearlessly ferocious when it comes to fighting against injustice.

3 Moments That Showed Camaraderie In Episodes 9-10 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图5

While Han Min is determined to bury uncomfortable truths and Hwang Seok Ho remains a passive spectator, Ye Rin continues to pursue them despite knowing the personal cost. If anything, Han Min’s increasingly aggressive behavior only serves to strengthen the credibility of those he is trying so hard to silence.

Saving Platoon Commander Ye Rin

Han Min’s campaign does not end with the inspection. Soon afterwards, Ye Rin is taken away for investigation, accused of violating protocol by conducting inquiries on her own during official working hours. It is a move designed to isolate her and send a message to anyone else thinking of asking too many questions.

What stands out during this entire ordeal is not merely what happens to Ye Rin, but who chooses to stand by her. The people in positions of authority largely remain silent. Hwang Seok Ho, despite having multiple opportunities to support his own personnel, once again refuses to take a stand. Having already failed to back Ye Rin during the controversy surrounding the officers’ banquet, he now remains equally passive while she faces investigation. At this point, his reluctance to challenge authority is no longer an isolated incident but an established pattern.

Fortunately for Ye Rin, Sung Jae has no intention of standing by and watching events unfold. Convinced that she is being treated unfairly, he, along with Dong Hyun, decides to bypass the usual channels and take their case directly to the regiment commander. Their plan, however, is anything but straightforward.

One of the episode’s more amusing sequences revolves around the regiment commander’s beloved dog. Having repeatedly heard him refer to his “daughter,” Sung Jae and Dong Hyun initially assume he was speaking about a child. They prepare chocolate cookies, only to discover that the object of his affection is actually his pet dog, who has recently stopped eating.

The misunderstanding leads to one of the most charming moments of the episode. Using the excuse that they wish to revisit the battalion commander at church, the duo manages to convince the sergeant major of their mission. He helps them get access to the best supplies to prepare something nutritious for his pet dog. And Sung Jae’s focus and dedication in preparing something healthy and appealing for the dog is endearing.

3 Moments That Showed Camaraderie In Episodes 9-10 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图9

The moment works because it perfectly encapsulates who Sung Jae is as a character. Whether he is cooking for soldiers, officers, or even a reluctant dog, his instinct is always the same. He approaches every task with sincerity and care. There is no hidden agenda, no calculation about what he might gain in return. He simply wants to help. And while he and Dong Hyun have breached protocol, they are fearless, because when your intent is pure, there’s nothing to fear.

His efforts pay off almost immediately. The regiment commander’s dog begins eating again, much to its owner’s delight. More importantly, the successful meal finally gives Sung Jae and Dong Hyun the opportunity they have been seeking. With the commander in a receptive mood, they explain what has happened to Ye Rin and why they believe she has been treated unjustly.

The resolution brings welcome relief. Ye Rin returns, and the outpost rallies around her. Faced with pressure from above, they choose solidarity over self preservation.

Ironically, the person who stands apart from this collective spirit is Hwang Seok Ho. While Sung Jae, Dong Hyun, and the rest of the outpost repeatedly put themselves on the line for one another, Seok Ho continues to prioritize caution over conviction. In an episode filled with examples of loyalty and courage, his silence becomes impossible to ignore. However, the trials at Gangrim are far from over.

3 Times Park Ji Hoon Proved Himself In Episodes 7-8 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”

With all the latest things that happened, Kang Sung Jae (Park Ji Hoon) has earned his stripes at the Gangrim Outpost. As the chef with the Midas touch who has boosted the morale of his comrades, his dedication has also earned him favor amongst the battalion. Sung Jae has been promoted to the rank of Private First Class and is now hailed as a combat hero after his performance in the training program.

Sung Jae has the skills to navigate the tricky tasks in the kitchen as he creates innovative and delicious meals. But the Guardian sets him up for a tougher assignment. He has been assigned the “help me comrade” button, but to access it he needs to win the trust and friendship of those around him. The task may seem simple, since Sung Jae is an amiable sort, but he tends to get pushed around. He needs to strengthen himself as well as empower those around him.

In the latest episodes of “The Legend of Kitchen Soldier,” we get an insight into how Sung Jae proves himself not just as a soldier, but as a human being.

Warning: spoilers for episodes 7-8 below.

The hamburger treaty

Sung Jae and Yoon Dong Hyun (Lee Hong Nae) are the new heroes of the battalion. It is proven that the food poisoning during the training was not caused by the negligence of the two cooks, but rather by contaminated water supplied to the battalion. Sung Jae, after wiping out the Vipers, is promoted, and Dong Hyun is finally granted his much-awaited leave.

Sung Jae is now in charge of the mess in Dong Hyun’s absence. Newly promoted and with the smile badge unpinned from his uniform, Sung Jae is determined to excel in his new innings. Dong Hyun, who in his own gruff way has always supported and backed Sung Jae, tells him that he needs to stand up for himself against the bullies at the base.

The troublemaker in question is Corporal Kim Gwan Chul (Kang Ha Kyung). Gwan Chul has made his dislike for Sung Jae obvious from the start. With Sung Jae being the new favorite of Gangrim Outpost, his resentment is even more apparent.

Sung Jae is happy to carve out his new chapter as chief cook, but his peace is shattered even before the first dish reaches the table when Gwan Chul is assigned to the kitchen as additional manpower.

The Guardian informs Sung Jae that he has a week to win over Gwan Chul as a friend; otherwise, he will be demoted in his quest to become the best chef. This seems like mission impossible, since Gwan Chul has already started intimidating Sung Jae in his own way.

Gwan Chul refuses to help and instead keeps helping himself to the pantry and the mess stock. He slacks off and, during meal times, serves generous helpings to his friends while leaving the younger soldiers with leftovers and almost nothing.

3 Times Park Ji Hoon Proved Himself In Episodes 7-8 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图2

Gwan Chul threatens Sung Jae that if he dares to complain or snitch about him to Sergeant Major Park Jae Young (Yoon Kyung Ho), he will make his life a living hell.

Sung Jae, as we know, is a sensitive person and one who picks up on vibes. He wonders why Gwan Chul is the way he is. He overhears talk in the dorm that Gwan Chul was once assigned to the mess. He casually tells Gwan Chul that he was surprised to learn he had once worked there too, but is immediately snubbed and told to stop snooping.

Curious, Sung Jae probes further to figure out why Gwan Chul left the mess. Park Jae Young tells Sung Jae that he reminds him of Gwan Chul when he first arrived at the base. A soft-spoken young man with no parents, Gwan Chul had been lovingly raised by his grandmother, who sold hamburgers. He was such a mild-mannered boy that they pinned the smile badge on him when he first arrived.

3 Times Park Ji Hoon Proved Himself In Episodes 7-8 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图3

However, after his grandmother’s demise while he was on military duty, Gwan Chul’s personality underwent a seismic shift. His grief turned to anger, and he despised the army and its protocols for keeping him away from her. His regret turned into rebellion, and since then, he has been constantly defying the system and its orders.

Sung Jae feels for Gwan Chul. Both are dealing with the grief of having lost the people they loved the most. While Sung Jae internalized his loss and channelled it into creating something, Gwan Chul has turned his pain into destruction.

Sung Jae starts researching how to recreate the hamburgers that Gwan Chul’s grandmother made. Park Jae Young tells him they tasted like home, the traditional bakery kind. He keeps experimenting and serving them to Jae Young, who tells him they are still lacking something essential. Sung Jae uses his “help me, comrade” switch and calls Dong Hyun, who tells him the burgers had both a sweet and savory taste. He discovers the missing ingredient: jam. It’s the sweetness which is missing in Gwan Chul’s life.

Sung Jae’s compassion and empathy are endearing. He genuinely feels for Gwan Chul. He hasn’t judged him, not even once, but instead has wanted to heal and soothe the hurt beneath the prickly and angry exterior.

When he serves him the burger, he is rudely snubbed by Gwan Chul. But that is when the floodgates open — the pent-up hurt, the longing for his grandmother’s warmth, and the fear of being alone. It’s an emotional moment when Gwan Chul takes a bite and imagines his grandmother’s hand serving him the burger. But instead of his grandmother, he sees Sung Jae’s face, until he hears his grandmother gently tell him that all the wrong he does will eventually come back to him and to go back to being the way he was.

Though Gwan Chul doesn’t say anything, the Guardian informs Sung Jae that the likability meter is at 100 percent — he has found a friend.

Gwan Chul is an example of how angry people are often the ones hurting the most. No one so far has understood him the way Sung Jae did; all he needed was a hamburger to tell him he wasn’t alone and unspoken support from someone who wasn’t judging him.

Comrade camaraderie

3 Times Park Ji Hoon Proved Himself In Episodes 7-8 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图6

Gangrim Outpost and Sung Jae share a common fate: they shine in the face of adversity. After winning the top tally in training, the morale is high until a typhoon isolates the base with negligible supplies on hand. Though in the doldrums and cut off from the world, it’s the kinship amongst the soldiers which comes to the surface.

Commander Hwang Seok Ho (Lee Sang Yi), who has the reputation of just shooting orders and trying to impress seniors, doesn’t think twice when he tries to avert a dangerous collision, which would have proved fatal for Sung Jae, by taking the blow himself. He fractures both his hands, and the bandages are his badge of honor. It gives an insight into the man he is; he cares deeply for his men, but acts nonchalant.

3 Times Park Ji Hoon Proved Himself In Episodes 7-8 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图7

But the main issue is the depleting supplies. With no electricity in the base, it’s impossible to refrigerate ingredients, and with the bridge having washed away there is no way they can get anything. To make matters worse, the phone lines have been disconnected.

The morale is down, hunger at its peak. As they complain about the terrible food, Gwan Chul is the one who steps in. With a newfound friendship between Sung Jae and Gwan Chul, they think of ways to innovate. Sung Jae has an idea: why don’t they use the supplies of Park Jae Young’s dry squid? But how do they ask him since it is his personal stash? With the help of the Guardian, Sung Jae gets Gwan Chul to go get the packets, since the latter is more confident than he is. The squid is included in Sung Jae’s version of seafood paella, much to the delight of the soldiers, who feel they have been transported to Spain. Sung Jae remains motivated, and his sincerity that none of the soldiers be dissatisfied when they are served by him remains strong.

Subsisting on combat rations, Sung Jae decides to bravely open Dong Hyun’s locker, since he knows the diet-conscious senior has boxes of chicken breast stashed away. Though all are aware of upsetting Dong Hyun, they are in it together for survival, and at this point anything works.

3 Times Park Ji Hoon Proved Himself In Episodes 7-8 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图8

Seeing the enthusiasm that Sung Jae has instilled in everyone, Sargent Major Park Jae Young announces he will go out into the woods and collect herbs and mushrooms. Hwang Seok Ho forbids him, being his senior, saying that Park Jae Young needs to adhere to protocol. But Park Jae Young defies him and returns with wild herbs and mushrooms, which are soon transformed into a wild vegetable bibimbap under Sung Jae.

In the meantime, Dong Hyun, who is ironically bored on his holiday, is missing the base and cuts his leave short to join the rescue operations in rebuilding the bridge. It’s adorable how he shows a bit of jealousy at the budding bromance between Sung Jae and Gwan Chul.

3 Times Park Ji Hoon Proved Himself In Episodes 7-8 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图9

What is heartwarming is how everyone instinctively begins looking out for one another. Whether it is Gwan Chul helping in the kitchen, Park Jae Young risking punishment to forage for food, or Dong Hyun cutting short his leave, the outpost no longer feels like a collection of individuals, but a family. Somewhere along the way, Sung Jae’s sincerity has become infectious, bringing together people who would otherwise have little in common.

From boy to man

3 Times Park Ji Hoon Proved Himself In Episodes 7-8 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图10

There has been a remarkable change in Sung Jae’s personality. The timid, unsure boy who enlisted now appears confident. The accolades and validation coming his way have not made him arrogant, but rather have made him more sincere and determined. His team of friendly comrades is gradually on the rise, with Dong Hyun, Gwan Chul, and Park Jae Young being most fond of him.

Though honest to a fault and very conscious about never crossing the line, Sung Jae has been distressed ever since he overheard Captain Han Min (Lee Min Gu) planning to eliminate and destroy Cho Ye Rin (Han Dong Hee). Han Min has threatened Sung Jae that if he dares discuss what he heard, he would destroy him.

Sung Jae nervously agrees and has remained quiet, but it’s been bothering him. He’s aware of the manipulative ways of Han Min, who had also misreported that Gang-rim had sufficient supplies when they were struggling, all in an attempt to undermine Hwang Seok Ho.

3 Times Park Ji Hoon Proved Himself In Episodes 7-8 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图11

Ye Rin, who is investigating the poor supplies and the scam, is also being closely watched by Han Min. Ye Rin has always stood up for the soldiers, and this is when we see another switch in Sung Jae. He goes and warns Ye Rin about what he had heard, asking her to be alert. But she brushes him away, not wanting a junior to get involved in the politics of the barracks. This is the first time we see a new maturity in Sung Jae. It is quiet resilience and fortitude.

Seeing the way his seniors, fellow soldiers, and the base have enveloped him in warmth, he is willing to stand up for them even if it means taking on an influential role. But is Sung Jae up for this challenge? Han Min is a shrewd and calculating opponent, and the temperatures are just beginning to rise once again at Gangrim Outpost.

Spoilers

At the end of Episode 7, the soldiers of Gangrim Outpost were forced to carry out fortification repairs late at night as heavy rain and strong winds from the approaching typhoon triggered an emergency situation.

The crisis continues in the upcoming Episode 8 as the outpost remains cut off from the outside world. To make matters worse, the unit begins running out of food supplies, creating an even more dire situation.

3 Defining Moments In Episodes 5-6 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”

At this point, Kang Sung Jae (Park Ji Hoon) has become the poster boy of Gangrim Outpost. His reputation as a chef, preparing meals that go beyond what is typically associated with military messes, has made national headlines. He has not only helped salvage the base’s reputation for serving inedible food, but he is also being credited with boosting the morale of his fellow soldiers.

But with great power comes even greater responsibility. When on leave, he is confronted with his mother’s struggling food truck business. Can he use his skills to help? And on his return to the base, he faces an even greater challenge when the entire cadre is deputed for combat training.

There are also tensions simmering in camp, but can Sung Jae save the day again? Here are three defining moments from episodes 5 and 6 of “The Legend of Kitchen Soldier.”

Warning: spoilers below!

The tteokbokki trial

3 Defining Moments In Episodes 5-6 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图

In the last episode, we saw Sung Jae being warmly embraced by reporter Jung Min Ah (Jeon So Young). It is very cute to see Sung Jae being teased by his comrades, but there is also a touch of envy. After all, who would have thought this strange fellow actually had a girlfriend? An embarrassed Sung Jae says Min Ah is not his girlfriend, while she turns around and tells everyone that she likes him immensely.

3 Defining Moments In Episodes 5-6 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图1

The TV report has made Sung Jae a celebrity of sorts and the Gangrim Outpost a culinary hub. Sung Jae is granted leave for a week and allowed to visit home. On his way back to Seoul, he is informed by the Guardian (VR console) that instructions won’t be possible beyond the military restricted area. He doesn’t make much of it until he arrives at his mom’s food truck.

When he tries his mother Gong Su’s (Seo Jung Yeon) tteokbokki, it is too hard and pungent. Sung Jae tries to create his own version but fails as well. At home, he tells his mother and sister that he is very good at grilling but doesn’t succeed either. With the Guardian being on low frequency, what does he do?

It is time he relied on himself rather than on an external device. He finds his father’s old diary, which lists where he sourced his ingredients. He insists that they should get fresh produce as well as freshly kneaded tteok instead of resorting to online shopping. But it seems the dish both mother and son are trying to create continues to lack flavor.

On a lunch outing with Min Ah, he sees a long queue outside a tteokbokki cafe and insists on eating there. Run by an eccentric former marine (Jin Goo), the small place is brimming with customers, and the tteokbokki tastes better than anything he has ever had. He requests the owner to teach him. However, he is assigned the task of chopping onions and frying. Frying ingredients is what he does under the supervision of the chef. His earnestness is endearing, and one wants him to win. But it seems he still hasn’t made much headway.

Also while home, we get a glimmer of the boy Sung Jae was before his father passed away. He was a happy-go-lucky person, who is now shouldering big responsibilities, but is game for it. It is Min Ah who tells him that everyone around him thinks he is amazing; it’s just that he doesn’t know how good he is.

On his last day, he is complimented by the chef and given a box to take home, a gift for working hard. The box contains persimmons, and that’s when Sung Jae realizes this is the ingredient that was giving the tteokbokki its unusual flavor. Sung Jae wasn’t handed down a recipe. He is taught that great food is created from perseverance rather than shortcuts.

3 Defining Moments In Episodes 5-6 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图4

He teaches his mother, and though he has spent his entire holiday slaving away in the little cafe, he is satiated. The family’s tteokbokki trial is a success, and he leaves home relieved that both his mother and sister will be fine, and of course there is Min Ah, his biggest cheerleader, rooting for him.

It is a warm feeling as the entire family being so invested in getting the tteokbokki right showcases how strongly they are bound to each other. The victory also feels about much more than the food. Without the constant guidance of the VR console, Sung Jae is forced to trust his own instincts, and in doing so, he discovers that he is far more capable than he gives himself credit for.

Bromance in the barracks

3 Defining Moments In Episodes 5-6 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图5

An interesting development is how Sung Jae has also become one of the most popular guys in the dorm. Initially labeled weird and strange by most, his sincerity and kindness have won him the admiration of his comrades. Being a team player and clear-hearted has made him a favorite of sorts. This is clear when the seniors in the dorm pool their money together and give him a holiday allowance to take home. The unspoken gesture is heart-warming and speaks far louder than words.

Of course, Dong Hyun (Lee Hong Nae) is miserable, since his much-awaited leave has been sidelined with Sung Jae being considered before him. But the soldiers are in agreement: if anyone deserves leave, it is Sung Jae. The officers also explain to Dong Hyun that Sung Jae was enlisted soon after his father’s demise and couldn’t grieve. The compassion is heartwarming, making it clear how much Sung Jae has come to mean to everyone.

However, Sung Jae’s absence means the mess is at the mercy of Dong Hyun’s cooking skills. His mood, further darkened by being denied leave, has made the food even more inedible than before. It seems Sung Jae comes to his rescue even in his absence. He knows his senior is upset and feeling terrible, so he leaves behind his recipe book with a fellow soldier, hoping it would help him.

Though Dong Hyun pretends he doesn’t want Sung Jae’s amazingness rubbed off on him, he is clearly relieved. Rest assured, he takes on the challenge of cooking ingredients he has repeatedly been warned not to touch, given his tendency to mess things up. The broth he serves is one of the best ever, so much so that the entire battalion is left in shock as well as surprise.

3 Defining Moments In Episodes 5-6 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图6

As Sung Jae’s return is celebrated, there is a minor hiccup. All leaves have been canceled, and the battalion has been called in for live combat training.

Dong Hyun is gutted since his leave has been canceled once again, but the real challenge is something else entirely: how do you cook in the wilderness? At least Sung Jae and Dong Hyun are in it together.

The curious case of the Arancini rice cakes

3 Defining Moments In Episodes 5-6 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图7

The entire battalion has been deputed for the KCTC event (Korea Combat Training Center). But it is far trickier for Sung Jae, as the Guardian tells him this is the time to boost the soldiers’ morale and lead them to victory. The training is designed like a real wartime exercise, with the enemy camp represented by the Vipers, a formidable battalion.

However, the harsh outdoors, limited resources, and lack of equipment make this by far the biggest challenge yet for both Dong Hyun and Sung Jae.

3 Defining Moments In Episodes 5-6 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图8
3 Defining Moments In Episodes 5-6 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图9

The first meal is a disaster, with the entire battalion struck down by severe food poisoning, and Hwang Seok Ho (Lee Sang Yi) threatens both Dong Hyun and Sung Jae with disciplinary action once the training is over. Meanwhile, the Vipers have already identified their location and destroyed much of their resources, with several officers falling to the enemy.

Dong Hyun and Sung Jae are warned that, come what may, they must never abandon their kitchen trailer. But after the food poisoning incident, most of their supplies have been thrown away, while fresh provisions are yet to arrive. How exactly are they supposed to survive?

Though Sung Jae earns praise for quickly deciphering the enemy’s movements, the cooking crisis remains unresolved. Hwang Seok Ho even warns him that his military career could be over once the exercise ends.

When Sung Jae suggests that they should seize enemy supplies, Cho Ye Rin (Han Dong Hee) agrees. Though she has bent protocol, if the exercise is to be treated like a real war situation, someone has to make the call.

3 Defining Moments In Episodes 5-6 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图10

The team manages to secure rice, rock salt, and sauce. But what does one make of that along with the dry supplies left in the pantry? The Guardian coaxes Sung Jae to try something. Since the troops are constantly on the move, he creates food packets for them, though they look far from appetizing. However, drawing on what he learned while tirelessly frying ingredients at the tteokbokki shop, he transforms the rice into crispy arancini rice balls, seasoning them with sauce and rock salt.

What makes Sung Jae such an engaging protagonist is that every time he is cornered, he finds a way out. Faced with food poisoning, dwindling supplies, and the threat of disciplinary action, he refuses to give in to adversity. Instead, he adapts, improvises and somehow manages to turn a handful of basic ingredients into a morale-boosting meal for the entire battalion.

Everyone eyes the rice balls with suspicion. But when the notoriously picky Hwang Seok Ho takes a bite, he is instantly transported. The arancini rice balls are a hit, and Sung Jae is finally out of the doghouse.

3 Defining Moments In Episodes 5-6 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图11

But there are tensions brewing. Ye Rin is pulled up for defying orders, though Hwang Seok Ho stands up for her. And it seems there may be an enemy within their own ranks. As Sung Jae overhears one of Hwang Seok Ho’s rivals, Captain Han Mi (Lee Min Gu), discussing something suspicious about Ye Rin over the walkie-talkie, it becomes clear that life isn’t quite as simple as a plate of arancini rice cakes.

3 Times Tensions And Tastes Ran High In Episodes 3-4 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”

Private Kang Sung Jae’s (Park Ji Hoon) skills with the skillet and the chopping board have become the talk of the military barracks in “The Legend of Kitchen Soldier.” The Gangrim Outpost holds the infamous reputation of being below par when it comes to soldier performance as well as the food served.

But it seems the rather odd Sung Jae, who has the knack for turning the tables with his innovative cooking skills, could be on his way to become the camp’s coolest chef. However, as there is many a slip between the cup and the lip, Sung Jae has several challenges on the way before he conquers the base kitchen.

Politics, favoritism, and egos are at their peak as Sung Jae needs to convince his uptight Company Commander Hwang Seok Ho (Lee Sang Yi) that he belongs in the kitchen. He’s also facing animosity from his seniors. But once his dishes hit the table, they do more than just satisfy hunger, they transport the soldiers into hilariously dramatic alternate realities. Here are three times tensions and tastes ran high at the Gangrim Outpost.

Warning: spoilers from episodes 3-4 ahead!

The curious case of the pork cutlet defection

3 Times Tensions And Tastes Ran High In Episodes 3-4 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图

In the latest episodes, Park Sung Jae’s attempt to impress Hwang Seok Ho with a special pork cutlet gets thwarted, since Seok Ho is adamant about transferring him. Sung Jae’s VR console informs him that this is the end of his innings as a kitchen soldier. The quest is over even before it began. His helplessness and disappointment are heartbreaking. It also feels unfair of Hwang Seok Ho to dismiss the dish without even trying it.

In the meantime, during nighttime patrolling, the base has an unauthorized visitor—a North Korean citizen. Hwang Seok Ho, in his efforts to project himself as the savior and protector of the nation, insists on reporting it as a case of defection. But Master Sergeant Park Jae Young (Yoon Kyung Ho) is adamant about investigating the matter first, given military protocols. As the two bicker, the man in question insists he wants to return home and not defect.

First Lieutenant Cho Ye Rin (Han Dong Hee) insists they feed the starving man first before beginning any investigation. Hwang Seok Ho pushes for ordering the best takeout instead, since the mess food is so bad that even if the man had wanted to defect, he would think otherwise. The visitor, however, insists he will not eat or even take a sip of water until he crosses the border.

3 Times Tensions And Tastes Ran High In Episodes 3-4 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图1

Unlike Hwang Seok Ho and the other unit officers, Ye Rin is neither bothered about rewards nor recognition. She wants to first feed the starving man, as they verify his identity and interrogate him. She asks Sung Jae to bring the untouched pork cutlet dish and serve it to him since he has refused everything else. Sung Jae is hesitant, and his confidence is at an all-time low. You can virtually feel his nervousness.

But that is when the tide turns as the visitor cannot resist the temptation. The dish is literally the taste of Neverland for him. It is almost comical when he imagines himself back home, tuning into South Korean airwaves to listen to music. The pork cutlet becomes a symbol of capitalism for him but also a bite that promises freedom. As he imagines the entire unit transformed into a rock band with him as the audience, he almost chokes.

For a moment, one feels this is truly the end for Sung Jae. Instead, the visitor suddenly announces he wants to defect because the cutlet tasted like the freedom he had long craved back home. The irony is hard to miss. In the end, it is not patriotism, but comfort, music, and food that tip the scales.

Hwang Seok Ho is smug. After all, he was the one who wanted to report it as a case of defection from the start. But as the visitor leaves, he wants to thank the chef who made the dish. He tells Sung Jae it is by far the best meal he has ever had The two most unlikely souls in the unit, Dong Hyun (Lee Hong Nae) and Sung Jae, finally get their moment to shine as they are rewarded by headquarters.

The incident is widely reported in the media as the “Pork Cutlet Defection.” Sung Jae is simply relieved that he has earned his spot in the kitchen. Of course, Hwang Seok Ho later claims his initial rejection of the dish was only because of its poor presentation, and he conveniently takes credit for being the one who believed Sung Jae belonged in the mess all along. And the VR informs Sung Jae that his path as chef has once again started.

The politics of braised pollock fillet

Back in the kitchen, Sung Jae works hard as he tries to improvise on his chopping, stir frying, and seasoning skills. He has been given the rose knife, a jump in grade, and a special uniform. The once untidy kitchen is spotless now, so much so that Sung Jae even lends Dong Hyun a helping hand without making it obvious. He salvages his dishes for him too but never once crosses the line with his senior, doing everything as a team member. This remains one of Sung Jae’s most endearing qualities: he is a team player.

The aroma from the kitchen has brought in the winds of change, as soldiers who once dragged their feet to the mess now sprint toward it. The leftover capacity is down by 70 percent, the VR informs Sung Jae.

A new challenge comes their way when they are informed that an Assemblyman will be visiting the station for inspection. His visit coincides with the day the mess serves the worst dish on the menu: braised pollock fillet. It is unanimously detested for its pungent smell. Hwang Seok Ho insists on curating a special menu and demands the best supplies be delivered. He passes on the responsibility to Ye Rin to oversee it. However, Hwang Seok Ho’s rival at headquarters turns down the request for supplies.

Unfortunately, the dish being served will still be the braised pollock fillet, and Sung Jae is appointed to salvage both the dish’s reputation as well as that of the mess. The VR guides him through the preparation, but he is unable to remove the fishy smell. The Sergeant warns him that if he fails, it is the end for him.

Poor Sung Jae, you genuinely feel for the guy. He is earnest, does his work sincerely, but somehow also ends up being the one taking the fall whenever things go wrong. He recalls how his father had once suggested tomato sauce for a similar preparation and decides to do the same thing. Everyone warns him he is ruining the dish further. The VR also informs him that he is exhausting himself since surfing recipes on the console is draining his strength. The Assemblyman, eager to win votes, wants to expose the poor food being served to soldiers.

Sung Jae serves the dish and informs the Assemblyman it is an Italian version of the preparation: the pomodoro braised pollock fillet. The expressions around the room range from horror to smugness to irritation as everyone waits for the verdict. It is clear it is the visitor’s least favorite dish, and he is only doing it for the camera. As the Assemblyman begrudgingly takes a bite, he suddenly screams “thief!” and we are treated to a hilarious visual of him chasing a figure wearing a rice bowl mask. He finally announces the dish is delicious and that it has made him greedy for more rice.

As everyone digs in, the mood completely shifts into celebration. Whose clever idea was it? Ye Rin reveals Sung Jae was the one who suggested they serve what the soldiers actually eat instead of over polishing the truth. But Sung Jae, now completely drained and low on energy, collapses before he can witness the celebrations. The Gangrim Outpost, meanwhile, is soaring high in popularity as the gastronomy station.

A barbecue of emotions

As Sung Jae wins over hearts and stomachs at the base, grief continues to weigh heavily upon him. He misses his father, and as he embarks on the same path, he finds himself weighed down by loneliness. When he collapses, he finds himself meeting his father in a meadow. His father turns around and smiles at him. The moment is deeply emotional, as Sung Jae breaks down in tears and embraces him. He tells his father that maybe he never thought much of it back then when his father cooked, but now it is something he truly wants to do.

His father tells him that though the work is hard, the joy of serving people and watching them enjoy what he cooked had given him immense happiness. He offers Sung Jae seaweed soup and tells him that instead of relying on external forces, he needs to believe in himself. Maybe this is exactly what Sung Jae needed to hear—the comfort and reassurance from his father that he was going to be okay. When he wakes up and once again begins surfing through his console, Ye Rin looks at him quizzically, wondering what exactly is going on with this strange yet talented soldier.

When a team barbecue is announced with officers from military headquarters visiting the base, it is clear there is an unspoken rivalry between Hwang Seok Ho and one of the officers, as well as tension between Ye Rin and the same officer.

Dong Hyun makes a complete mess of grilling the meat, and the unit is left starving as the officers devour the meat while the soldiers are left with vegetables. Once again, Sung Jae takes charge with the tongs and expertly barbecues the meat, retaining its flavor and winning points across the table.

The chief officer suggests upgrading him to the officers’ mess. Hwang Seok Ho instantly agrees, eager to play the yes man to his superior and score brownie points. Ye Rin, however, refuses. She has a point. The soldiers have long been fed less than appetizing fare, and moving Sung Jae away would not only be unfair to them but would also place unnecessary pressure on him.

Over the dinner table, the tension is palpable. Hwang Seok Ho realizes that his fellow officer is trying to undermine him in front of the senior officer. On the other hand, Ye Rin, who has constantly tried to keep up with the men and their ways, continues to be patronized. Apparently, her mentor, an upright Major, had been made a scapegoat over certain issues. Though things are still unclear, it is evident she too is carrying emotional baggage of her own.

As Sung Jae succeeds with the daily preparations, he tells Dong Hyun that he is simply happy seeing his comrades enjoy the food. With the help of the VR console, Sung Jae has developed a knack for gauging the quality of rations and realizes spoiled and low quality ingredients are being supplied. He initially keeps it to himself, but when Ye Rin overhears him say it aloud, she firmly tells him never to stay quiet about such things. It is the first time she speaks sharply to him, but amusingly, the VR informs him that she approves of him. It is yet another stamp of confidence for the unsure Sung Jae.

The vendors are under the Sergeant Major, who is responsible for inspections, and Ye Rin begins to understand there is far more to the situation than meets the eye, especially since vendors and commissions are serious business. Will she be able to get to the bottom of it?

In the meantime, since the food at the base has now become the talk of the town, a broadcasting network arrives to film the unit.

The episode ends when the attractive young reporter leading the team suddenly runs up and hugs Sung Jae. For the first time, you see his perpetually sad eyes truly smile as the rest of the unit stares open mouthed in shock. The moment is equal parts cute and hilarious because things are clearly getting exciting at the Gangrim Outpost, and the strange Sung Jae is well on his way to becoming the most popular guy there.
