First Impressions: “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier” Is A Comedy Serving Food For The Soul

The food in the military mess isn’t exactly Michelin cuisine. But what happens when an innovative soldier with a knack of creating his own dishes turns the tables in the barracks and has his hangry comrades feeling satiated for once? The mission could be a recipe for disaster, or not, as Private Kang Sung Jae (Park Ji Hoon) discovers.

Sung Jae has been certified as the best trainee in bootcamp and is assigned to the Gangrim outpost. He finds himself not only at the center of attention amongst his superiors but also discovers a mysterious quest window. This is just the beginning of his adventures in the military, not as a soldier, but possibly as a Masterchef.

“The Legend of Kitchen Soldier” is a feel good military comedy which serves up humor, heart and a dash of fantasy. Here is what you can expect in the premiere episodes.

The premiere episode opens with an introduction to the new military recruit, Private Kang Sung Jae. On the way to his new posting, the newly minted trainee tells us he hopes it is the beginning of his new innings as a loyal and brave soldier of the Republic of South Korea.

However, he receives unexpected attention when Master Sergeant Park Jae Young (Yoon Kyung Ho) asks him to fill in his details in the dossier.

Sung Jae is quiet and reserved and is a bit skeptical about divulging his personal details. We learn his father recently passed away, and Sung Jae was enlisted soon after. His mother runs a food stall to support the family. Sung Jae, who has so far done odd jobs, hopes to find his mission during the course of his enlistment.

Reviewing the documents, Sergeant Park certifies him as an “S Class” recruit. He is flagged off as a candidate with potential mental health issues, and a smiley badge is pinned to his uniform so that his comrades take notice. Ironically, despite being viewed as unstable, Sung Jae appears to be far more perceptive than those around him, which becomes increasingly clear as the story progresses.

Soon, Sung Jae starts hallucinating as a virtual reality console, complete with voice-over instructions and solutions, opens up before him. He’s the only one who can see it, so his unit has all the more reason to believe he needs help since he appears to be staring into space. The seniors tells him it is a condition that befalls many, but he regards the VR console as a guardian watching over him.

Company Commander Hwang Seok Ho (Lee Sang Yi) decides to assign Sung Jae to kitchen duty. He tells Sung Jae that he would like him to cook the meals like his father did at the diner he ran. Though the moment may feel as if he has just been assigned to a department, it is one that carries weight.

We get a glimpse into Sung Jae’s past. Though the family lived humbly, surviving off “Sung Jae’s Diner,” which was run by his father, they were happy. Grappling with grief and putting up a brave front to the world, Seok Ho assigning him to the kitchen could be just what Sung Jae needs to heal.

The unit counsellor, on the other hand, rates Sung Jae as a sensitive young man, who is highly perceptive towards people’s feelings and not someone who can harm others or inflict harm on himself. But his supervisors are convinced he needs to be observed and not assigned dangerous duties.

Still, navigating the kitchen is like marking enemy lines. Run under Yoon Dong Hyun (Lee Hong Nae), known for his dreadful culinary skills, the meals that are served are not only tasteless, but downright inedible. Every bite of Dong Hyun’s cooking is a cry for help, so much so that even Sung Jae, on his first bite, feels he could possibly not survive the meal.

When Dong Hyun gives Sung Jae the herculean task of rearranging the pantry, the VR console guides him, and he handles it meticulously, even surprising the inspecting officer. However, despite the kitchen being like a battlefield and the food served doing little for morale, Dong Hyun remains unfazed. So much so that he walks away during mess hours, leaving Sung Jae to prep a meal for the Sergeant Major.

The VR forewarns him that the first meal is rarely ever a success, but he should pursue it. The object of the game, as he is told, is to become a legendary soldier chef and prepare innovative dishes. He also gets notifications from the console on the freshness of ingredients as well as skills in kitchen organization.

He recalls his father’s recipe and the secret ingredient which could help improvise the seaweed soup. As he is prepping, you see the first glimpse of happiness on his face. It is clear he is feeling close to his father.

However, it backfires since the Major gets an allergy attack due to the perilla seeds used and is hospitalized.

Is this the end for Sung Jae? The VR shows that he is rating high on the dislike meter. Dong Hyun hates him for messing up the kitchen, and Seok Ho is livid while the rest of the unit is gossiping that the new Private tried to kill the Major.

However, it is First Lieutenant Cho Ye Rin (Han Dong Hee), the supervisor of the kitchen, who stands up for him. She says she had tasted the soup, and there was nothing wrong with it. She seems like a person with a spine, but finds herself in a minority and unheard in the testosterone-driven unit.

Seok Ho is adamant and wants to transfer Sung Jae to another department called TOD (the thermal operation device). Sung Jae is not keen, since he has his heart set on being in the kitchen. Cooking is the mission he was seeking, and it’s something that makes him feel close to his family.

Sung Jae once again saves the day for Dong Hyun in the kitchen by removing the staleness from the rice as well as making refreshing bean sprout soup. The mood in the dining hall changes, and it is a first for the soldiers to be served a delicious meal. Though Dong Hyun is grateful for being bailed out by Sung Jae, it seems he is still getting transferred. The unit, on the other hand, cannot stop talking about the delicious breakfast. Has Dong Hyun had an awakening? Because it certainly couldn’t have been the strange new fellow.

Dong Hyun’s dislike meter becomes negligible now, and we see the first inkling of a bromance as he credits Sung Jae, telling the unit that he was the one who had cooked the rice and soup. But it seems Seok Ho remains unmovable and is going to transfer Sung Jae.

The mission to bring Private Sung Jae to the kitchen begins. Both Dong Hyun and Sung Jae devise a plan to serve a meal to Seok Ho, who only rejects their efforts. Ye Rin also decides to stand up and takes on Seok Ho. It’s a show of strength from the only woman in the battalion.

Sung Jae, for the first time, musters courage and says he wants to stay in the kitchen. He recalls what his father said: a meal cooked with sincerity will always bring happiness. Cooking is perhaps the task which makes him feel closest to his family as well as bringing happiness to those around him. This is what he wants to do. Sung Jae’s earnestness makes him an endearing character, someone you want to protect. You cannot help but root for this young boy, who finds expression through his cooking.

Usually, the depiction of military life on screen is one of harsh hierarchy, toxicity, and bullying in the foreground, showcasing the rigidity of the establishment. However, with “The Legend of the Kitchen Soldier,” humanism seems to be at the core, as does compassion despite the competitive environment. The quirky idea of the video game console is a clever execution and almost feels like a metaphor for Sung Jae’s father guiding him, or could also be his own subconscious installing confidence in himself. The drama also uses food not merely as comfort, but as memory, healing, and emotional connection.

“The Legend of Kitchen Soldier” is enjoyable fare, with its strong emotional core. Park Ji Hoon hits the ball out of the park with his earnest and natural performance, backed by strong chemistry amongst the ensemble cast. It’ll be fun to see how he cooks up a storm in the kitchen and serves the unit.

First Impressions: “Yumi’s Cells 3” Brings Back Romantic Chaos With A New Male Lead

After her 2025 hit drama “The Price of Confession,” Kim Go Eun returns to the small screen with another installment of the beloved “Yumi’s Cells” series. This time, she stars opposite actor Kim Jae Won in the K-drama “Yumi’s Cells 3,” which is already back with even more emotional chaos, awkward tension, and cell-driven inner-world mayhem.

Here is what you can expect in the premiere episodes!

Warning: spoilers ahead!

It has been around three years since audiences last saw Yumi. In that time, she has left her office job behind and reinvented herself as a romance writer. Her career is now at its peak, her name steadily gaining recognition, and her stories finding a loyal readership. Yet, despite her professional success, Yumi’s once colorful inner world has changed in an unexpected way. Her life, which used to be filled with emotional highs and chaotic romantic impulses, has become stable, predictable, and somewhat dull.

Inside Yumi’s mind, her Love Cell, which once took charge of her decisions with reckless enthusiasm, has gone dormant. It now sleeps soundly in a frozen chamber alongside many of her other cells, including the Anger Cell, Swearing Cell, Hate Cell, and even the once-active Endorphin Cell. The silence is unsettling. Her Rationality Cell quietly observes the situation with growing concern. It fears that if things continue at this pace, even more cells will shut down, leaving Yumi emotionally stagnant and creatively blocked.

“Yumi’s Cells 3” opens with Yumi attempting to shake herself out of this emotional lull. In search of inspiration for her next romance novel, she goes on a skydiving trip. For a brief moment, as she steps out of the plane and feels the rush of wind and fear collide, her dormant emotions flicker back to life. Her cells stir slightly, reacting to the intensity of the experience. But as quickly as it comes, the feeling fades once she is back on the ground. The novelty wears off almost immediately, and Yumi finds herself bored again, unable to capture anything meaningful from the experience. It’s the same with her trip to Europe, which was equally unproductive in terms of creative inspiration. Despite visiting picturesque cities and experiencing new cultures, she felt emotionally detached.

Shortly after, her current producer is injured due to the skydiving incident. As a result, the publishing house assigns a new producer to Yumi’s project. His name is Shin Soon Rok (Kim Jae Won).

Shin Soon Rok is tall, handsome, and highly competent at his job. On paper, he seems like the perfect professional partner. In reality, however, he is extremely calm, almost annoyingly so. To Yumi’s Emotional Cell, his emotional range appears comparable to a gray concrete wall, unchanging and impenetrable. His conversational style is equally minimal. He responds with short, clipped phrases, most often limited to the different variations of “아 네” (literal translation: ah yes), a restricted emotional vocabulary that frustrates anyone attempting to interpret his thoughts or intentions.

Noticing Shin Soon Rok’s communication style, or rather the lack of it, Yumi’s Rationality Cell begins to worry. It quietly calculates a bleak outcome in which Yumi’s emotional stagnation deepens further, dragging the rest of her cells into dormancy. But something unexpected happens. Shin Soon Rok’s calm, unshakable presence begins to disturb Yumi’s otherwise monotonous routine.

At first, it starts small. They are taking the same bus when Yumi, constrained by her Manner Cell, decides she cannot simply put in her earbuds and ignore him. She attempts polite conversation, but Shin Soon Rok responds minimally, offering no follow-up questions and showing no visible curiosity. At one point, he even puts in his earbuds, effectively ending the interaction before it begins. The experience leaves both Yumi and her Manner Cell confused and angered.

Later, at Yumi’s favorite snack spot selling bungeo-ppang, the crispy fish-shaped bread, Shin Soon Rok unknowingly escalates the tension. He orders the last batch of strawberry custard bungeo-ppang, all eight pieces, leaving none for Yumi. Despite her obvious hints and subtle attempts, he leaves without offering a single piece. Emotional Cell is outraged.

As if that were not enough, Shin Soon Rok casually mentions that Maltese dogs are not particularly intelligent, which strikes a nerve with Yumi, who is currently caring for her friend’s Maltese and has grown attached to it. He also indirectly criticizes her driving skills, though whether it was intentional or simply Yumi’s interpretation remains unclear. Finally, in a move that feels almost personal, he requests to be taken off Yumi’s project entirely.

In short, Yumi and Shin Soon Rok do not work well together. Or at least, that is what it seems.

Much like the previous installments, “Yumi’s Cells” and “Yumi’s Cells 2,” “Yumi’s Cells 3” continues to explore the inner workings of ordinary people falling in love. There are no grand romantic gestures at this stage, only small, uncomfortable interactions that slowly accumulate meaning over time. Yet even in its early stages, the chemistry between Yumi and Shin Soon Rok is undeniable in its tension.

First Impressions: “Yumi’s Cells 3” Brings Back Romantic Chaos With A New Male Lead插图10

What also sets “Yumi’s Cells 3” apart, however, is its male lead selection. Unlike both previous seasons, Shin Soon Rok appears, on the surface, to have the personality of a potato: plain, unseasoned, and emotionally unreadable. And yet, against all odds, he becomes the very force that stirs Yumi’s long-dormant emotions back into motion.

The distance between them, combined with Shin Soon Rok’s apparent lack of desire to close it, frustrates not only Yumi but also the audience, who find themselves waiting for the inevitable moment when he is forced to confront his own emotions. Whether that moment will come, and whether Yumi’s dormant cells will awaken again in response, remains to be seen.

First Impressions: “Love Beyond The Grave” Is A Haunting C-Drama Of Love And Longing Across Time

A bewitchingly beautiful sorcerer named He Si Mu (Dilraba Dilmurat) is the sovereign of the spirit world. The 400-year-old Spirit Lord walks the earth to guide mortals to the spirit world at night and guide the spirts back to their realm during the day. She encounters a dashing young general named Duan Xu (Arthur Chen) on one of her many earthly prowls and is intrigued. But more than by him, it is the sword of deliverance that he carries that catches her interest.

She plans her moves, getting close to him. But it’s trickier than she anticipated, since Duan Xu has several tricks up his sleeve. What starts off as a playful push and pull escalates into something deeper and meaningful. “Love Beyond the Grave” is not just a supernatural fantasy drama but one with a strong emotional core.

We are introduced to He Si Mu, the enchanting wandering Spirit Lord. She has been anointed as the current Sovereign, given her skills as a spirit which have been honed over years of cultivation.

Dressed in her bright robes, she confesses that her world is devoid of color, and she also lacks the five senses, though seeing her confidence, you would think otherwise. She loves to roam the mortal world, especially Liangzhou. There is a prophecy that the master of the Deliverance Sword is a spell bearer who will help bring her senses back. It has been over three hundred years, and she has yet to meet this man.

On one of her many jaunts, as she walks down the wartorn interiors of the city, an injured man asks her to save his son. Making her way toward the pile of bodies, she notices the Commander of the Tabai Army, the young general Duan Xu, walk in.

Si Mu, who wears a perpetual nonchalant expression, is taken aback for once. She notices the Sword of Deliverance strapped to Duan Xu’s waist, the very sword that had belonged to her aunt centuries ago. Curious about Duan Xu and equally about him being its master, she transforms into her mortal body, taking the identity of He Xiao Xiao.

She faints and asks Duan Xu to help save her brother, the injured man’s son, Chen Ying. Duan Xu asks his men to escort her and Chen Ying to their estate.

Duan Xu’s people are suspicious of her, regarding both her and Chen Ying as spies. On the other hand, Si Mu is equally wary of Duan Xu, convinced he is not what he claims to be. But during an assassination attempt on him, she realizes that he is indeed the sword’s master and the chosen one.

She later learns from her assistant, who is investigating Duan Xu for her, that he comes from a scholarly family and had relatives in the royalty but was impeached. But now that he is a general, Si Mu concludes that he is bound to die sooner or later and that she will eventually gain access to the sword.

First Impressions: “Love Beyond The Grave” Is A Haunting C-Drama Of Love And Longing Across Time插图4

One day, while observing him incognito, she slips from her Spirit Lantern, which trembles in the presence of the sword, causing her to fall from her vantage point. Duan Xu sees her, and it is clear he knows she is not who she pretends to be.

Duan Xu, on the other hand, is impressed with her knack for predicting the weather, a skill that proves to be useful in battle, and he asks her to stay by his side. He also asks his people to investigate her, and though they return empty handed, he remarks with a smile that she is rather interesting.

When one of his commandants, who is investigating her, asks her to divulge the truth as to why she keeps shadowing him, she answers with a straight face that she loves him. Duan Xu overhears and smiles, well aware she is playing games.

In one scene, when Si Mu enters his room and observes his scarred body, her curiosity deepens. Observing him closely, she is convinced Duan Xu is not who he claims to be: there is nothing about him that feels rooted in the region he supposedly belongs to. Her hunch is further confirmed when her assistant reports that Duan Xu was ambushed in battle at the age of 19, leading her to believe he may not be the same person but someone who has been replaced.

First Impressions: “Love Beyond The Grave” Is A Haunting C-Drama Of Love And Longing Across Time插图5

It is amusing how, in her thoughts, she refers to him as “foxy,” recognizing that he is far more than he appears and admiring his sharp reflexes.

Duan Xu, meanwhile, is well aware that she lacks the five senses and is able to see her even when she is invisible. The two are constantly testing each other, and though the outcomes are sometimes grim, they are often laced with humor.

Since she knows he is her spell breaker and no longer wishes for his death, she wants to protect him. She offers him a deal: she will grant his wishes in return for helping her regain her senses. But Duan Xu refuses, saying he never makes wishes. Si Mu needs to craft another plan, but it seems he knows very well what her designs are.

Who are these two individuals, caught in such a strange dance of fates?

Dilraba Dilmurat presents Si Mu as playful and elusive, carrying an almost childlike smile that suggests very little truly moves her. There is an ease and confidence to her, a self assuredness that makes the character feel both untouchable and quietly intriguing.

First Impressions: “Love Beyond The Grave” Is A Haunting C-Drama Of Love And Longing Across Time插图6

Arthur Chen, on the other hand, is every bit the dashing general—composed, restrained, and quietly perceptive. He brings a calm intensity to Duan Xu, revealing more through stillness than overt expression.

Together, the two share an understated yet compelling chemistry, one that simmers beneath their constant probing and distrust.

What also stands out also is the sheer production value. The costumes, in particular, are stunning, rich in detail and texture, adding to the visual grandeur of the world.
