5 Reasons To Watch BL “After Moving Seats, The Boy Behind Me Has A Crush On Me”

“After Moving Seats, the Boy Behind Me Has A Crush On Me” is about a new class seating arrangement that leads to an unexpected and slightly awkward atmosphere when the class loner is confessed to by the school’s most popular guy, a guy he has no recollection of ever talking to.

If that already excites the BL watcher in you, here are five more reasons this heartwarming, low‑stress BL deserves a spot on your watch list:

Warning: spoilers ahead!

1. The set-up is gold

5 Reasons To Watch BL “After Moving Seats, The Boy Behind Me Has A Crush On Me”插图

The plot isn’t complicated, extravagant, or even new in this J-BL, but the way that it’s uncomplicated is actually what makes it so good, especially if you’re looking for a low-stakes, fun watch that isn’t going to add to your real-world stress. Basically, it’s a story about a confession and the blossoming romance that follows, the circumstances of which are pretty much entirely covered in the title (in a very Japanese BL fashion).

All it takes is a classroom seating change by random drawing to alter what was likely to be another normal day for students Mayama Hare (Konishi Eito) and Asamiya Kosei (Gennosuke). Mayama is the classroom loner who enjoys his peaceful days unbothered and alone, while Asamiya is the handsome, popular guy who doesn’t really want the popularity his looks gain him. Thanks to the seating change, Mayama ends up seated in front of Asamiya.

At first, all seems well and good for Mayama: he’s near the back of the class, and he thinks he’ll be able to continue his quiet, mundane high school life just as he always has. However, mere moments after changing seats, he receives a life-altering note from the stranger behind him. The note? It says, “I like you,” and it’s from Asamiya. Talk about wasting no time at all!

2. It’s a lesson on honesty and communication

5 Reasons To Watch BL “After Moving Seats, The Boy Behind Me Has A Crush On Me”插图4

This may come as a shock, but everyone actually says what they mean, and honesty is the default in this drama. That’s pretty much rare at this point, maybe especially in BLs where miscommunication, secrets, and characters who hold back how they really feel are almost unavoidable.

Even though Asamiya’s note is as simple and straightforward as confessions come, Mayama is both confused and in shock when he sees it. He, in fact, does not think the note is for him. While he starts to spiral in his own head and tries to figure out who the note is for, you’d think there’d be a long, drawn-out period before things are cleared up between the leads, but that’s just not how it goes (and thank goodness for that).

Most of the honesty and good communication in this show is thanks to Asamiya. While he comes off as the untouchable popular guy who is uninterested in everyone, he is actually very observant, at least when it comes to his crush.

He quickly picks up when Mayama is misinterpreting things or giving off a weird vibe, and he makes every effort to be clear about his feelings. So, there’s no drawn-out situation at all: Asamiya quickly clarifies to Mayama that the confession was for him and no one else. Of course, this only confuses Mayama more, but at least everything is out in the open.

Throughout the entire show, there are virtually no lies, no secrets, and no drawn-out miscommunications or long waits for resolutions. There is definitely an addictive allure to shows where there is a lot of back-and-forth, and it takes work to get to a confession or any growth between the leads, but sometimes it’s also nice to see a couple form through totally honest and transparent circumstances. This J-BL is truly a breath of fresh air.

3. It isn’t just fluff

5 Reasons To Watch BL “After Moving Seats, The Boy Behind Me Has A Crush On Me”插图8

This show has all the fluffy, warm, comforting vibes you could want, but it also doesn’t lack substance despite being low-stakes.

As you’ll quickly realize, Asamiya is consistently honest and hilariously blunt, and maybe too blunt for his own good. When he tries to pursue Mayama before he has even had time to process the confession, Asamiya starts giving him notes in class with a bunch of things he likes about him. The boy is clearly head over hills, because who says they like how someone “hunches over”? He’s already deep in love for sure.

However, Mayama sees all the notes as his flaws and thinks that Asamiya, for whatever reason, is pointing out all the things that are bad about him. The truth is, Mayama has extremely low self-esteem and doesn’t think highly of himself. It’s a big part of why he doesn’t understand or trust Asamiya’s confession at first, because he doesn’t know how someone, let alone someone as popular and handsome as Asamiya, could like him.

The most heartbreaking moments in this show — and there are only a few — are when Mayama expresses how little he thinks of himself. Luckily, he found a guy who is willing to tell him all the good things about him at any given point and time.

4. There isn’t a bad guy

5 Reasons To Watch BL “After Moving Seats, The Boy Behind Me Has A Crush On Me”插图11

If you’ve been watching dramas for a while now, a story without an evil or conniving character is something you can probably appreciate. You won’t find a villain or dislikable character in this drama, and it’s another way this show feels different, despite being such a simple story.

5 Reasons To Watch BL “After Moving Seats, The Boy Behind Me Has A Crush On Me”插图12

From their lovable friends to their respective siblings, basically everyone in Mayama’s and Asamiya’s lives is supportive, fun, and genuinely rooting for them. The support system around them is truly enviable.

5. It’s short (but doesn’t feel incomplete)

5 Reasons To Watch BL “After Moving Seats, The Boy Behind Me Has A Crush On Me”插图13

This quick eight-episode drama is super easy to binge in a single day — it’ll only take you about three hours to watch it start to finish. This is definitely a blessing and a curse though.

On one end, you don’t need to worry about having to commit to a full 16-episode saga, or whatever you think qualifies as a long show, so if you’re short on time, are looking for a quick endorphin rush, or just prefer shorter shows, this undeniably delivers a good time in a short time.

However, it can also feel too short. Not to say this drama feels open-ended or incomplete, because that’s not the case. It’s more so that by the end of it, the leads have only just started their relationship, and you can’t help but want to see more of them, their fun friend group, and their journey together. If anything, most viewers left this with only one critique: wishing they could’ve seen more.

7 K-Dramas To Watch If You Love Characters With Super Powers

Superheroes aren’t always people in capes saving the world. In K-dramas, they can be teenagers hiding extraordinary abilities, a family struggling with powers that are slowly disappearing, demon hunters working out of a noodle shop, or even an ordinary man whose strength depends on the cash in his wallet.

From action-packed supernatural thrillers to quirky comedies and heartfelt romances, these dramas put their own spin on the superhero genre. If you enjoy stories about ordinary people with extraordinary abilities, here are seven K-dramas to add to your watchlist.

“Moving”

7 K-Dramas To Watch If You Love Characters With Super Powers插图

Have superhero films often made you wonder whether superpowers do exist in the real world, or if they’re just a fiction of someone’s super imaginative mind? “Moving” takes place in the real world following three high school students who appear to be ordinary teenagers but are secretly hiding extraordinary abilities. Kim Bong Seok (Lee Jung Ha) can fly and Jang Hee Soo (Go Youn Jung) possesses incredible physical strength and has the ability to recover quickly from injuries, while Lee Gang Hoon (Kim Do Hoon) has superhuman strength and speed. As they struggle to keep their abilities hidden, they discover that their parents, played by Han Hyo Joo, Zo In Sung, and Ryu Seung Ryong, have been concealing extraordinary secrets of their own.

What begins as a coming-of-age story soon turns into a much bigger battle involving people with supernatural abilities and those determined to hunt them down. This is one of those shows which keeps you riveted and invested in its plot from beginning to end.

“The Atypical Family”

7 K-Dramas To Watch If You Love Characters With Super Powers插图1

What happens when a family with supernatural abilities begins losing their powers? “The Atypical Family” follows the Bok family, whose members have inherited unusual abilities. Bok Gwi Ju (Jang Ki Yong) can travel back to happy moments from his past while his sister Bok Dong Hee (Claudia Kim) can fly and their mother Bok Man Heum (Go Doo Shim) can see the future through her dreams. But their powers begin to disappear as the family struggles with very modern problems, which include alcoholism and excess weight as well as the stress to fit in. Everything changes when Do Da Hae (Chun Woo Hee) enters their lives and becomes unexpectedly intertwined with the family.

Rather than focusing on saving the world, the drama uses its supernatural premise to explore loneliness, family, love, and the unexpected ways people can become each other’s salvation.

“The Uncanny Counter”

7 K-Dramas To Watch If You Love Characters With Super Powers插图2

Meet the supernatural demon hunters known as Counters. They work at a humble noodle restaurant serving piping hot bowls of comforting broth, but their real job is to track down evil spirits that have come to Earth in search of eternal life. So Mun (Cho Byeong Gyu), the youngest member of the team, possesses extraordinary strength and becomes an important part of the Counters after discovering his abilities. Do Ha Na (Kim Se Jeong) can sense evil spirits and read memories through touch while Ga Mo Tak (Yoo Jong Sang) has incredible physical strength and Chu Mae Ok (Yeom Hye Ran) possesses healing abilities.

If you like your superheroes with plenty of action, humor, friendship, and found-family feels, “The Uncanny Counter“ delivers all of that while giving the superhero team a refreshingly unconventional home base: a noodle restaurant.

“Cashero”

7 K-Dramas To Watch If You Love Characters With Super Powers插图3

What if your superpower depended on how much money you had in your wallet? Kang Sang Ung (Lee Junho), an ordinary civil servant, suddenly discovers that he becomes stronger the more cash he has. There is, however, one major catch: every time he uses his superhuman strength, he loses that money. As Sang Ung tries to balance his ordinary life, his relationship with Min Suk (Kim Hye Jun), and his newfound responsibility to protect people, he discovers that being a superhero can be an expensive business.

The clever premise gives “Cashero” plenty of comedic potential while also turning something as mundane as money into the hero’s greatest power and biggest weakness.

“The WONDERfools”

7 K-Dramas To Watch If You Love Characters With Super Powers插图4

Set in 1999, when apocalyptic beliefs were regular fare with the world at the cusp of the millennium, Eun Chae Ni (Park Eun Bin) is an unpredictable young woman living in Haeseong City. When she unexpectedly gains a supernatural ability after a strange incident, her neighbors also develop unusual powers. There’s also Lee Un Jeong (Cha Eun Woo), a principled but socially awkward civil servant from Seoul, who arrives in the city and begins investigating a series of mysterious disappearances. As the unlikely group gets drawn into the case, they must learn to control their powers and come together to fight a villain threatening Haeseong City.

Forget polished superheroes in perfect costumes, “The WONDERfools” is at its most entertaining when its eccentric, imperfect characters fumble their way into becoming heroes, with the quirky comedy and Park Eun Bin and Cha Eun Woo’s pairing adding to its appeal.

“He Is Psychometric”

7 K-Dramas To Watch If You Love Characters With Super Powers插图5

Lee Ahn (Park Jinyoung) can read the memories and feelings of people or objects through physical contact. His psychometric powers are far from perfect, and he often struggles to control them. He meets Yoon Jae In (Shin Ye Eun), a young woman determined to hide a painful secret from her past. As the two become involved in an investigation connected to a tragic incident, Lee Ahn begins using his unusual ability to uncover clues and search for the truth.

Blending supernatural powers with romance, mystery, and crime, “He Is Psychometric” is an engaging choice for viewers who enjoy stories where an unusual ability becomes both a gift and a burden, while the central romance gives the mystery an emotional dimension.

“The Game: Towards Zero”

Kim Tae Pyung (Taecyeon) is a mysterious sort who has the capacity to predict a person’s death simply by looking into their eyes. But this disturbing ability has left him emotionally isolated, as he is forced to see how everyone around him will die. But everything changes when he meets detective Seo Joon Young (Lee Yeon Hee), whose death he cannot see. When the two become involved in a case connected to the infamous “Midnight Killer,” Tae Pyung’s unusual ability becomes crucial to uncovering the truth.

This drama is a compelling choice if you enjoy supernatural abilities mixed with crime, mystery, romance, and psychological suspense, especially as Tae Pyung begins to question whether seeing the future means he can actually change it.
