3 Times Tensions And Tastes Ran High In Episodes 3-4 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”

Private Kang Sung Jae’s (Park Ji Hoon) skills with the skillet and the chopping board have become the talk of the military barracks in “The Legend of Kitchen Soldier.” The Gangrim Outpost holds the infamous reputation of being below par when it comes to soldier performance as well as the food served.

But it seems the rather odd Sung Jae, who has the knack for turning the tables with his innovative cooking skills, could be on his way to become the camp’s coolest chef. However, as there is many a slip between the cup and the lip, Sung Jae has several challenges on the way before he conquers the base kitchen.

Politics, favoritism, and egos are at their peak as Sung Jae needs to convince his uptight Company Commander Hwang Seok Ho (Lee Sang Yi) that he belongs in the kitchen. He’s also facing animosity from his seniors. But once his dishes hit the table, they do more than just satisfy hunger, they transport the soldiers into hilariously dramatic alternate realities. Here are three times tensions and tastes ran high at the Gangrim Outpost.

Warning: spoilers from episodes 3-4 ahead!

The curious case of the pork cutlet defection

3 Times Tensions And Tastes Ran High In Episodes 3-4 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图

In the latest episodes, Park Sung Jae’s attempt to impress Hwang Seok Ho with a special pork cutlet gets thwarted, since Seok Ho is adamant about transferring him. Sung Jae’s VR console informs him that this is the end of his innings as a kitchen soldier. The quest is over even before it began. His helplessness and disappointment are heartbreaking. It also feels unfair of Hwang Seok Ho to dismiss the dish without even trying it.

In the meantime, during nighttime patrolling, the base has an unauthorized visitor—a North Korean citizen. Hwang Seok Ho, in his efforts to project himself as the savior and protector of the nation, insists on reporting it as a case of defection. But Master Sergeant Park Jae Young (Yoon Kyung Ho) is adamant about investigating the matter first, given military protocols. As the two bicker, the man in question insists he wants to return home and not defect.

First Lieutenant Cho Ye Rin (Han Dong Hee) insists they feed the starving man first before beginning any investigation. Hwang Seok Ho pushes for ordering the best takeout instead, since the mess food is so bad that even if the man had wanted to defect, he would think otherwise. The visitor, however, insists he will not eat or even take a sip of water until he crosses the border.

Unlike Hwang Seok Ho and the other unit officers, Ye Rin is neither bothered about rewards nor recognition. She wants to first feed the starving man, as they verify his identity and interrogate him. She asks Sung Jae to bring the untouched pork cutlet dish and serve it to him since he has refused everything else. Sung Jae is hesitant, and his confidence is at an all-time low. You can virtually feel his nervousness.

But that is when the tide turns as the visitor cannot resist the temptation. The dish is literally the taste of Neverland for him. It is almost comical when he imagines himself back home, tuning into South Korean airwaves to listen to music. The pork cutlet becomes a symbol of capitalism for him but also a bite that promises freedom. As he imagines the entire unit transformed into a rock band with him as the audience, he almost chokes.

For a moment, one feels this is truly the end for Sung Jae. Instead, the visitor suddenly announces he wants to defect because the cutlet tasted like the freedom he had long craved back home. The irony is hard to miss. In the end, it is not patriotism, but comfort, music, and food that tip the scales.

3 Times Tensions And Tastes Ran High In Episodes 3-4 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图2

Hwang Seok Ho is smug. After all, he was the one who wanted to report it as a case of defection from the start. But as the visitor leaves, he wants to thank the chef who made the dish. He tells Sung Jae it is by far the best meal he has ever had The two most unlikely souls in the unit, Dong Hyun (Lee Hong Nae) and Sung Jae, finally get their moment to shine as they are rewarded by headquarters.

The incident is widely reported in the media as the “Pork Cutlet Defection.” Sung Jae is simply relieved that he has earned his spot in the kitchen. Of course, Hwang Seok Ho later claims his initial rejection of the dish was only because of its poor presentation, and he conveniently takes credit for being the one who believed Sung Jae belonged in the mess all along. And the VR informs Sung Jae that his path as chef has once again started.

The politics of braised pollock fillet

3 Times Tensions And Tastes Ran High In Episodes 3-4 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图3

Back in the kitchen, Sung Jae works hard as he tries to improvise on his chopping, stir frying, and seasoning skills. He has been given the rose knife, a jump in grade, and a special uniform. The once untidy kitchen is spotless now, so much so that Sung Jae even lends Dong Hyun a helping hand without making it obvious. He salvages his dishes for him too but never once crosses the line with his senior, doing everything as a team member. This remains one of Sung Jae’s most endearing qualities: he is a team player.

The aroma from the kitchen has brought in the winds of change, as soldiers who once dragged their feet to the mess now sprint toward it. The leftover capacity is down by 70 percent, the VR informs Sung Jae.

3 Times Tensions And Tastes Ran High In Episodes 3-4 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图4

A new challenge comes their way when they are informed that an Assemblyman will be visiting the station for inspection. His visit coincides with the day the mess serves the worst dish on the menu: braised pollock fillet. It is unanimously detested for its pungent smell. Hwang Seok Ho insists on curating a special menu and demands the best supplies be delivered. He passes on the responsibility to Ye Rin to oversee it. However, Hwang Seok Ho’s rival at headquarters turns down the request for supplies.

3 Times Tensions And Tastes Ran High In Episodes 3-4 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图5

Unfortunately, the dish being served will still be the braised pollock fillet, and Sung Jae is appointed to salvage both the dish’s reputation as well as that of the mess. The VR guides him through the preparation, but he is unable to remove the fishy smell. The Sergeant warns him that if he fails, it is the end for him.

Poor Sung Jae, you genuinely feel for the guy. He is earnest, does his work sincerely, but somehow also ends up being the one taking the fall whenever things go wrong. He recalls how his father had once suggested tomato sauce for a similar preparation and decides to do the same thing. Everyone warns him he is ruining the dish further. The VR also informs him that he is exhausting himself since surfing recipes on the console is draining his strength. The Assemblyman, eager to win votes, wants to expose the poor food being served to soldiers.

Sung Jae serves the dish and informs the Assemblyman it is an Italian version of the preparation: the pomodoro braised pollock fillet. The expressions around the room range from horror to smugness to irritation as everyone waits for the verdict. It is clear it is the visitor’s least favorite dish, and he is only doing it for the camera. As the Assemblyman begrudgingly takes a bite, he suddenly screams “thief!” and we are treated to a hilarious visual of him chasing a figure wearing a rice bowl mask. He finally announces the dish is delicious and that it has made him greedy for more rice.

As everyone digs in, the mood completely shifts into celebration. Whose clever idea was it? Ye Rin reveals Sung Jae was the one who suggested they serve what the soldiers actually eat instead of over polishing the truth. But Sung Jae, now completely drained and low on energy, collapses before he can witness the celebrations. The Gangrim Outpost, meanwhile, is soaring high in popularity as the gastronomy station.

A barbecue of emotions

3 Times Tensions And Tastes Ran High In Episodes 3-4 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图6

As Sung Jae wins over hearts and stomachs at the base, grief continues to weigh heavily upon him. He misses his father, and as he embarks on the same path, he finds himself weighed down by loneliness. When he collapses, he finds himself meeting his father in a meadow. His father turns around and smiles at him. The moment is deeply emotional, as Sung Jae breaks down in tears and embraces him. He tells his father that maybe he never thought much of it back then when his father cooked, but now it is something he truly wants to do.

His father tells him that though the work is hard, the joy of serving people and watching them enjoy what he cooked had given him immense happiness. He offers Sung Jae seaweed soup and tells him that instead of relying on external forces, he needs to believe in himself. Maybe this is exactly what Sung Jae needed to hear—the comfort and reassurance from his father that he was going to be okay. When he wakes up and once again begins surfing through his console, Ye Rin looks at him quizzically, wondering what exactly is going on with this strange yet talented soldier.

When a team barbecue is announced with officers from military headquarters visiting the base, it is clear there is an unspoken rivalry between Hwang Seok Ho and one of the officers, as well as tension between Ye Rin and the same officer.

Dong Hyun makes a complete mess of grilling the meat, and the unit is left starving as the officers devour the meat while the soldiers are left with vegetables. Once again, Sung Jae takes charge with the tongs and expertly barbecues the meat, retaining its flavor and winning points across the table.

The chief officer suggests upgrading him to the officers’ mess. Hwang Seok Ho instantly agrees, eager to play the yes man to his superior and score brownie points. Ye Rin, however, refuses. She has a point. The soldiers have long been fed less than appetizing fare, and moving Sung Jae away would not only be unfair to them but would also place unnecessary pressure on him.

Over the dinner table, the tension is palpable. Hwang Seok Ho realizes that his fellow officer is trying to undermine him in front of the senior officer. On the other hand, Ye Rin, who has constantly tried to keep up with the men and their ways, continues to be patronized. Apparently, her mentor, an upright Major, had been made a scapegoat over certain issues. Though things are still unclear, it is evident she too is carrying emotional baggage of her own.

As Sung Jae succeeds with the daily preparations, he tells Dong Hyun that he is simply happy seeing his comrades enjoy the food. With the help of the VR console, Sung Jae has developed a knack for gauging the quality of rations and realizes spoiled and low quality ingredients are being supplied. He initially keeps it to himself, but when Ye Rin overhears him say it aloud, she firmly tells him never to stay quiet about such things. It is the first time she speaks sharply to him, but amusingly, the VR informs him that she approves of him. It is yet another stamp of confidence for the unsure Sung Jae.

The vendors are under the Sergeant Major, who is responsible for inspections, and Ye Rin begins to understand there is far more to the situation than meets the eye, especially since vendors and commissions are serious business. Will she be able to get to the bottom of it?

3 Times Tensions And Tastes Ran High In Episodes 3-4 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图9

In the meantime, since the food at the base has now become the talk of the town, a broadcasting network arrives to film the unit.

The episode ends when the attractive young reporter leading the team suddenly runs up and hugs Sung Jae. For the first time, you see his perpetually sad eyes truly smile as the rest of the unit stares open mouthed in shock. The moment is equal parts cute and hilarious because things are clearly getting exciting at the Gangrim Outpost, and the strange Sung Jae is well on his way to becoming the most popular guy there.

5 Breaking Points In Episodes 7-8 Of “Filing For Love”

This week, some things are in for a big change in “Filing for Love”! In these new episodes, some ghosts from the past return, crazy issues arise at present, and the future starts to look uncertain for Joo In Ah (Shin Hae Sun) and Noh Ki Jun (Gong Myoung). With the story moving forward and the tension between them intensifying, at this point, every step they take feels like a decisive choice. It’s one that could potentially change the course of their lives. Here are some moments that felt like a big breaking point in this K-drama!

Warning: spoilers from episodes 7-8 ahead.

1. Learning about Joo In Ah and Jeon Jae Yeol’s relationship

The cat is out of the bag, and although everyone could have had their suspicions, learning the truth behind the relationship between Joo In Ah and Jeon Jae Yeol (Kim Jae Wook) feels both relieving and bittersweet. Knowing they met when Jae Yeol was attempting to end his life and that In Ah gave all her heart and loyalty to this man even before starting a relationship, only for them to break up, is nothing short of tragic. But at the same time, knowing she has no lingering feelings nor regrets, even though their relationship ran deeper than your typical office romance, is also great.

While this information doesn’t give Ki Jun peace of mind, at least he is willing to give her the benefit of the doubt when he tells her about the anonymous report regarding her and Jae Yeol. If there are any more reasons to love Ki Jun’s character, then this is it. Because no matter how jealous he might be, or how petty he tries to act, like when he goes one-on-one against Jae Yeol in a soccer game, he remains true to his feelings for In Ah. Ki Jun ultimately decides to trust her and to close the case against her as a pure misunderstanding.

2. Joo In Ah and Noh Ki Jun growing closer

Love grows in the face of adversities. And even when Ki Jun getting literally stabbed by an employee who was sexually harassing female co-workers seems a little too drastic, it works its purpose. In Ah running towards Ki Jun the moment she knows he is hurt, and watching her frantic reaction upon seeing him covered in blood, is impressive. The anguish, the fear in her expression, and the devotion she shows staying by his side after he is out of danger give you chills with excitement. This is the definite moment when she opens up her heart, and everyone around her can notice how much brighter and happier she is; that is Ki Jun’s effect on her life.

And believe it or not, they aren’t even dating yet. But in a romance drama, there’s nothing better than two main characters communicating with each other and understanding each other’s minds. Before jumping into a relationship, which could feel like a slowdown in the pace they’ve been following, they have the chance to talk, to actually get to know each other better. As thrilling as the steamy kiss scenes may appear, the moment they share their fears and thoughts under the rain, that’s when the romance really sparks, and you can feel them falling completely in love.

3. Joo In Ah drawing the line with Jeon Jae Yeol

Before In Ah can start her sweet romance with Ki Jun, she still has one obstacle left to clear: Jeon Jae Yeol. Once she learns that he is trying to send Ki Jun overseas, she steps up to set the record straight. But In Ah drawing the line between them only makes him more desperate to reach out to her again, unable to let go of his lingering feelings. And it’s understandable, since his character is quite pitiful. But as sad as his life might be, the moment he chose his family’s company over love he had already sealed his fate.

Nonetheless, despite In Ah not having feelings for him anymore, when she realizes that Ki Jun could potentially damage Jae Yeol’s already precarious situation at the company, she decides not to disclose the information and agrees to send Ki Jun away as soon as possible. Although her actions come from the last threads of loyalty In Ah has for Jae Yeol, that ignites a spark of hope in his heart, which could potentially backfire on her in the future.

4. Park Ah Jeong confronting Jeon Jae Yeol about In Ah

So far, things have been looking like a love triangle, but a character that’s also been there all along is Park Ah Jeong (Hong Hwa Yeon). Contrary to what appeared in the beginning, she isn’t the type to unnecessarily cling to someone who clearly isn’t interested in her, which in her case is Jae Yeol. However, she isn’t a pushover either, and she does care about Ki Jun, even if she isn’t precisely fond of In Ah or their relationship.

Whether this change of heart comes out of jealousy or genuine concern, she is the only one with the courage to confront Jae Yeol about his petty attitude towards In Ah and Ki Jun. It does seem like her character is kept too much on the sidelines, without much relevance other than her having a crush on the second male lead. But that’s why the plot twist works so well when we find out that she is the one who sent the anonymous mail to Ki Jun about In Ah and Jae Yeol. And surely, she won’t stay silent about it anymore.

5. Noh Ki Jun running to Joo In Ah

When it seems like everything is set and done between Ki Jun and In Ah, both ready to give up on whatever was starting between them, the last breaking point happens. The time they spent together serves as the bridge to unite them again. That’s why it is so important that she explains her fears and how she’s always wished for someone to fight for her until the end, even if she pushed them away. And fortunately, Ki Jun also has the support of his older sisters, who make him see the truth behind In Ah’s actions.

Giving In Ah the hope she always wished to receive, Ki Jun travels to Jeju Island to clear up all the misunderstandings and ends up healing something he didn’t break. And In Ah reciprocates by giving the last step to him, kissing him wholeheartedly. This moment feels as special as it looks. The softness and passion of the scene is everything we’ve been waiting for them. Their dating era is finally starting, but what other troubles will they face in the future? Let’s find out in the next episodes of “Filing for Love”!

“Gilboard” Dream: Inside The Lore Of Picheolin, The Alter Ego Of SEVENTEEN’s Dino

The theater kids of K-pop have done something only theater kids could do. On May 11, PLEDIS Entertainment announced that SEVENTEEN’s youngest member, Dino, will be debuting as his alter ego, Picheolin.

Picheolin’s first mini album, “吉BOARD” (Gilboard), is set to release on global music platforms on August 3. The title is described as a “witty take” on Billboard charts, referring to the unofficial street music charts and cassette compilations popular in the 1990s.

While veteran CARATs, SEVENTEEN’s fandom, are already well acquainted with Picheolin, newer fans and non-fans were left confused, wondering why a 27-year-old idol was suddenly dressing and speaking with the mannerisms of an ahjussi.

So, here’s the full lore behind SEVENTEEN member Dino’s “Gilboard”-charting alter ego, Picheolin.

Origin of DINO’s alter-ego, Picheolin

“Gilboard” Dream: Inside The Lore Of Picheolin, The Alter Ego Of SEVENTEEN’s Dino插图

Picheolin first appeared in SEVENTEEN’s 2021 CARATLAND VCR, a term commonly used for the pre-recorded videos or interludes shown during concerts and fan meetings.

SEVENTEEN is especially known among fans for turning their CARATLAND VCRs into elaborate comedy skits, and the 2021 CARATLAND VCR was no exception. It begins with Seungkwan, the writer of a fictional show, “What the Earth,” and producer Jeonghan walking through a village while discussing plans for the program. During their walk, they speak on the phone with the village head, Mingyu. According to him, the village has a 40-year history and is home to numerous “masters,” making it the perfect setting for the show.

As Mingyu gives Seungkwan and Jeonghan a tour of the village, viewers are introduced to Picheolin for the first time, a name that plays on the English word “featuring.” (Note: “Featuring,” often abbreviated as “feat.” or “ft.,” refers to the music practice where a primary artist invites a guest performer onto a track.)

Picheolin appears wearing his now-iconic glasses, speaking with the accent and mannerisms of a middle-aged man, while somehow being energetic enough to put even Gen Zs to shame. He introduces himself as a 53-year-old fashionista and music producer.

The rest of the VCR solidifies his character as an overly enthusiastic man who constantly interrupts conversations and inserts himself into discussions while the production team is introduced to the rest of the village residents.

List of content Picheolin has appeared in

While every SEVENTEEN member played a different character in the 2021 CARATLAND VCR, as well as in content released before and after it, Dino’s character Picheolin was by far the one who kept reappearing.

“GOING SEVENTEEN WONWOO’s Diary”

The “GOING SEVENTEEN” episode “WONWOO’s Diary,” released on July 20, 2022, follows Wonwoo, who dreams of becoming a documentary director. He visits a village seemingly identical to the one featured in the 2021 CARATLAND VCR and begins documenting its eccentric residents, each with personalities of their own.

This episode marks the first time Picheolin breaks containment and appears in SEVENTEEN’s YouTube variety show, “GOING SEVENTEEN.” Here, he is referred to as “Fe Turin.” With Picheolin’s classic mannerisms, accent, and most importantly his signature shades, it’s clear that he is the same character.

“GOING SEVENTEEN COMEBACK SPECIAL: God of Light Music”

The “GOING SEVENTEEN” episodes released on October 18, 2023, ahead of SEVENTEEN’s “God of Music” comeback are among the most meta in the series to date.

Across the two-part special, the members portray exaggerated characters involved in the music industry, while Dino takes on the role of Fe Turing, the CEO of a fraudulent entertainment company, BOMG.

The episodes further expanded Picheolin’s chaotic lore and cemented him as one of Dino’s recurring comedy personas.

Fun fact: The song “God of Light Music,” a trot version of SEVENTEEN’s “God of Music” created during the episode, became so popular that the group eventually released it officially on global streaming platforms in December 2023.

38th Golden Disc Awards, BSS’s “Fighting (ft. Picheolin)”

Picheolin’s most iconic appearance to date came during the 38th Golden Disc Awards, where he made a surprise appearance during BSS’s (BooSeokSoon) performance of “Fighting.”

On January 6, 2024, appearing fully in character, he performed alongside the subunit and delivered a personalized rap that perfectly matched Picheolin’s over-the-top alter ego. The performance also featured his signature catchphrase: “sarang-e nunbit,” literally translated as “Eyes of Love,” which has since become one of Picheolin’s taglines.

“GOING SEVENTEEN Special ETC: DINO Name Change to Fe Turin?”

Picheolin re-enters “GOING SEVENTEEN” lore on March 20, 2024, through the special episode “ETC: DINO Name Change to Fe Turin?”

Typically, “GOING SEVENTEEN” episodes revolve around a single concept, whether that is the members playing mafia games, debating absurd topics, or going on retreats. However, “ETC” is structured differently. The episode compiles several smaller ideas that were too underdeveloped to become standalone episodes.

Although Dino does not physically dress up as Picheolin in the episode, the central gag is that PLEDIS Entertainment’s CEO has supposedly decided to officially change Dino’s stage name to Fe Turin. Making CARATs wonder, was this a foreshadowing!?

“Gilboard” Dream: Inside The Lore Of Picheolin, The Alter Ego Of SEVENTEEN’s Dino插图1

While the decision to debut as a 50-something-year-old alter-ego might still seem absurd to some, this is not the first time SEVENTEEN has turned an inside joke into a Billboard-charting career move.

SEVENTEEN’s subunit BSS, which broke countless record, scored numerous awards, and whose song “Fighting” was used as the official cheering song for Team South Korea at the 2024 Paris Olympics, also started as an inside joke during 2018 CARATLAND.

Furthermore, SEVENTEEN’s subunit DxS turned their scripted towel-throwing fight from “GOING SEVENTEEN COMEBACK SPECIAL: SEVENTEEN TV” for the “Happy Burstday” album into a five-minute-long parody film for the DxS “SERENADE ON STAGE” concert VCR.

Whether as Dino or Picheolin, one thing remains certain: no one commits to the bit quite like SEVENTEEN. Sarang-e Nunbit!!!

6 K-Dramas Where The Male Lead Helps The Female Lead Heal

All you need is love, and when that affection comes with a healing touch, it makes it all the more sweet. K-dramas have more often than not given us male leads who have defined and redefined what it means to be a green flag.

These are men who celebrate the success of the women they love, thrive in her victories, but also show resilience and fortitude in helping the female lead offload her emotional baggage as well as overcome her traumas.

They also showcase strength in character. Determined and confident in themselves, they show us that a relationship is based on loyalty, trust, and embracing all aspects—the good, the bad, and the ugly—with no judgment. Here are six K-drama men who help the female leads heal and made us root for them.

Warning: spoilers for the shows below.

The years haven’t been kind to Hye Jin (Hwang Jung Eun). Her family fell into hard times, she couldn’t pursue her dream to write, and she hustles between different jobs. Most importantly, she is extremely self-conscious about her looks. She feels she is no longer nice looking, given her frizzy hair and sallow complexion.

One of the biggest strengths of “Will Love in Spring” is its grounded and emotionally realistic storytelling. The drama focuses on two deeply human characters whose different outlooks on life naturally shape their relationship. Zhuang Jie’s determination to live boldly despite her disability contrasts beautifully with Chen Mai Dong’s quiet, restrained nature as a funeral makeup artist who spends his days helping others cope with loss. Their emotional journeys feel authentic because both characters carry personal insecurities and emotional scars, yet gradually learn to trust and lean on one another. The drama thoughtfully explores themes of healing, self-worth, grief, and acceptance, making the romance mature, heartfelt, and meaningful. Viewers who enjoy character-driven stories will appreciate how the relationship develops slowly through shared understanding, emotional growth, and respect rather than forced drama.

Another reason the drama stands out is the exceptional chemistry and performances from Li Xian and Zhou Yu Tong, bringing warmth and complexity to their characters. Their portrayal of two adults navigating love, vulnerability, and personal ambition is refreshingly natural and relatable. The romance is portrayed in a mature and organic way, allowing the characters to openly express affection and desire. At the same time, the drama balances its heavier themes with beautiful cinematography, quiet emotional moments, and a comforting atmosphere, leaving a lasting impression. “Will Love in Spring” fully embraces imperfection, both in its characters and in love itself. The drama acknowledges that love alone cannot instantly solve every problem, giving the relationship a deeper sense of realism and sincerity.

With its charming visuals, lighthearted humor, and emotional storytelling, the drama offers a refreshing take on the xianxia genre, a popular style of Chinese fantasy that often features immortals, cultivation, magical creatures, and adventures set in beautifully imagined worlds. Rather than relying solely on grand fantasy elements, the series balances its magical setting with grounded emotions and themes of friendship, courage, redemption, and sacrifice. Tian Yao and Yan Hui’s journey is filled with exciting adventures, touching moments, and character growth, while the warm and lively atmosphere gives the show the nostalgic charm of classic xianxia dramas.

One of the reasons “Go Ahead” feels so memorable is how naturally it blends emotional depth with warmth, humor, and everyday life. Despite exploring heavier themes such as loneliness, abandonment, and emotional trauma, the drama never becomes overly melodramatic or emotionally draining. Instead, it handles these struggles with sincerity, creating a comforting and uplifting tone that makes the characters’ journeys feel genuine and relatable. At the heart of the story is the found family dynamic between Li Jian Jian, Ling Xiao, and He Zi Qiu, whose playful sibling bond and unwavering support for one another form the emotional core of the drama. Paired with light comedic moments and slice-of-life storytelling, the series captures the beauty of ordinary experiences and the quiet ways people help each other heal.

Last but not least, I had to include this year’s hottest drama, Pursuit of Jade,” a historical romance that follows Fan Chang Yu (Tian Xi Wei), a resilient butcher’s daughter determined to become the head of her household, and Xie Zheng (Zhang Ling He), a fallen marquis living under a false identity while seeking revenge for a long-buried feud. “Pursuit of Jade” is a richly layered historical romance, blending political intrigue and stunning Chinese aesthetics. Set during a turbulent era, the drama moves seamlessly from bustling marketplace streets to dangerous battlefields and imperial court conflicts, creating an immersive world that is both intimate and epic in scale. Directed by the highly acclaimed Zeng Qing Jie, the show uses cinematography not just for visual beauty, but to deepen the emotional narrative through atmospheric lighting, carefully framed close-ups, and dreamlike transitions that reveal the characters’ inner struggles. The snowy first encounter between the OTP, the everyday moments shared over food and work, and the gradual unfolding of hidden pain and loyalty all contribute to a warm realism beneath its grand historical backdrop. “Pursuit of Jade” is also praised for thoughtfully incorporating traditional cultural elements such as Qin opera and shadow puppetry, adding both cultural richness and artistic depth.

At the heart of the drama is the unforgettable romance between Fan Chang Yu and Xie Zheng, brought to life by the performances of Tian Xi Wei and Zhang Ling He. Fan Chang Yu stands out as one of the drama’s greatest strengths: a butcher’s daughter who is practical, fearless, and emotionally sincere, making her a refreshingly unconventional historical drama heroine. Tian Xi Wei delivers a magnetic performance, balancing humor, vulnerability, and strength with ease. Zhang Ling He is equally compelling as Xie Zheng, a man burdened by revenge and years of restraint, whose transformation from a guarded, wounded survivor into the commanding Marquis of Wu’an is conveyed through subtle shifts in expression and presence.

Together, the two actors generate a fiery, yet tender chemistry. Their relationship evolves from cautious cooperation to unwavering devotion, built on mutual respect and emotional equality. Fan Chang Yu never simply follows behind Xie Zheng, she stands beside him as an equal partner in both love and battle. This powerful dynamic, combined with the drama’s character-driven writing and strong performances, is a key reason why “Pursuit of Jade” became an international hit.

As a relationship blossoms, it is Eun Ho who provides her with a safety blanket of warmth and affection that she so craves. Gaining the support from a man who doesn’t feel threatened by her nor resents her, Ji Yun realizes it is okay to let go and slow down.

“Love Scout” is a heartwarming drama. From its progressive portrayal of gender dynamics, it also gave us one of the best on-screen characters in Lee Jun Hyuk’s Eun Ho. A doting father who understands his young daughter, he also brings the same level of compassion toward the woman he loves.

“She Was Pretty”

Ji Sung Joon (Park Seo Joon) returns home to Seoul after having grown up in the States. The first person he seeks is his old childhood friend and crush, Kim Hye Jin. Hye Jin, the prettiest girl in the neighborhood, had befriended the chubby and friendless Sung Joon. Sung Joon would be mocked by kids, but it was Hye Jin who always had his back. The two had been in touch, but Sung Joon has no idea what the adult version of Hye Jin looks like.

She sends her friend to meet Sung Joon instead of her. But when she lands a job as an intern at the same magazine where Sung Joon is an editor, she can no longer avoid him. Though initially oblivious to her, Sung Joon keeps finding himself drawn toward Hye Jin, who seems familiar to him. As the truth finally surfaces, Sung Joon is just happy to have found Hye Jin back. All he remembers of her is her sensitive and caring nature, something that still remains the same. She had helped him when he was young, and now it’s his turn to make her feel confident in her skin as well as her own abilities.

“She Was Pretty” is a charming rom-com with a deep message: that beauty is more on the inside than the outside. Hye Jin’s complex regarding her looks is of no importance to Sung Joon, who loves her for who she is.

The two meet again but Ho Jin is his usual reserved self, avoiding Mu Hee’s exuberance but also taken aback with her mood swings. He understands she is suffering from anxiety and helps her but maintains a professional distance. But when a work trip takes them half way across the world, he sees beyond Mu Hee’s starry facade. She suffers from a trauma-induced dissociative identity disorder. It’s something that makes her behave erratically and causes her emotional distress.
