12 K-Dramas Which Serve Dark Comedy With A Slice Of Entertainment
K-dramas have never been afraid to find humor in uncomfortable places. From dysfunctional families and marital warfare to murder, revenge, and desperate struggles for survival, black comedy allows these dramas to explore the darker side of life without taking themselves too seriously. The humor can be absurd, satirical, or downright macabre, often making the characters’ increasingly outrageous situations even more entertaining.
If you enjoy stories where morally complicated characters find themselves in situations that keep spiralling out of control, these dramas offer plenty of dark laughs alongside their thrills.
“The Affair Was Just the Beginning”
Kyung Hee (Kim Hye Soo) is a successful CEO of an interior design company and a popular influencer who has built an image of a happy, successful family with her husband Jae Hong (Kim Ji Hun). Their seemingly perfect life is disrupted when they become entangled with their neighbors, dermatologist Soo Jung (Cho Yeo Jeong) and her ex-husband Bo Sung (Kim Jae Chul), who are locked in a bitter divorce battle. A secret involving the two families sets off a chain reaction that makes an ordinary affair seem almost trivial.
The drama takes the familiar ingredients of marital secrets and neighborhood rivalry and pushes them into increasingly outrageous territory. The contrast between the polished public images these characters maintain and the chaos unfolding behind closed doors makes for a deliciously dark comedy.

“Mad Concrete Dreams”
Ki Su Jong (Ha Jung Woo) is the owner of Seyun Building, but mounting debts and problems with his property leave him struggling to hold onto the life he has built for his family. His friend, Min Hwal Seong (Kim Jun Han), desperate to solve his own financial problems, draws him into a fake kidnapping scheme. Kim Seon (Lim Soo Jung), Su Jong’s strong-willed wife, tries to protect their family as the situation spirals, while Yo Na (Shim Eun Kyung), a ruthless operative, has her own interest in Su Jong’s building.
What begins as a desperate attempt to solve a financial problem quickly turns into a dangerous mess. The drama finds its black humor in ordinary people making increasingly terrible decisions while trying to escape problems that only keep getting bigger.

“The Escape of the Seven”
The disappearance of a young girl brings together seven people whose lives are already tangled in lies, ambition, and betrayal. Geum Ra Hee (Hwang Jung Eum) is an aggressive drama production company CEO and the girl’s biological mother. Min Do Hyuk (Lee Joon) is a former gangster, while Han Mo Ne (Lee Yoo Bi) is an aspiring idol whose seemingly perfect life hides a web of lies. Cha Joo Ran (Shin Eun Kyung) is a doctor whose relationship with wealthy businessman Bang Chil Sung (Lee Deok Hwa) is driven by money. At the center of the mystery is Matthew Lee (Uhm Ki Joon), the mysterious head of a major mobile platform company.
This is melodrama pushed to deliberately outrageous extremes. Lies, revenge, murder, and betrayal keep escalating, creating a story that’s so excessive that its sheer unpredictability becomes part of the dark fun.

“Bittersweet Hell”
Noh Young Won (Kim Hee Sun) is a successful psychiatrist whose carefully constructed family life begins to fall apart. Her mother-in-law, Hong Sa Kang (Lee Hye Young), is a mystery writer with her own secrets, while Young Won’s husband Choi Jae Jin (Kim Nam Hee) and a mysterious young woman, Lee Se Na (Yeonwoo), become part of the increasingly complicated situation.
At its heart, this is a story about a family that looks perfect from the outside but is riddled with secrets. The increasingly bizarre battle between family members gives the thriller a wickedly comedic edge.

“The Kidnapping Day”
Kim Myung Joon (Yoon Kye Sang) is a financially desperate father who agrees to kidnap Choi Ro Hee (Jeon Yu Na), the daughter of a wealthy family, in order to pay for his own daughter’s medical treatment. But Ro Hee is no ordinary kidnapping victim. After losing her memory, the remarkably intelligent girl becomes an unexpected partner to her inexperienced kidnapper. Detective Park Sang Yoon (Park Sung Hoon) investigates the case, while Myung Joon’s ex-wife Seo Hye Eun (Kim Shin Rok) is also caught up in the story.
The unlikely relationship between a bumbling kidnapper and an exceptionally clever child gives this thriller much of its humor. The story gradually becomes more than a crime plot, mixing mystery, emotion, and dark comedy.
“Fifties Professionals”
Jung Ho Myung (Shin Ha Kyun), Bong Je Soon (Oh Jung Se) and Kang Beom Ryong (Heo Sung Tae) were once at the top of their respective fields. After a mysterious incident forced them into exile on Yeongseon Island, the three men have spent years away from the action. A new turn of events brings their old skills back into play as they set out to uncover the truth about what happened a decade earlier. Ma Gong Bok (Lee Hak Joo) is among the characters connected to their story.
The drama mixes action with comedy built around three middle-aged men being pulled back into a world they thought they had left behind. Their age, past reputations, and very different present-day lives create plenty of opportunities for humor.

“The Penthouse”
Set in the ultra-luxurious Hera Palace, the show revolves around three women from very different backgrounds. Shim Soo Ryeon (Lee Ji Ah) is the elegant woman at the top of the social hierarchy. Cheon Seo Jin (Kim So Yeon) is a wealthy, ambitious soprano who will go to extraordinary lengths to protect her status, while Oh Yoon Hee (Eugene) comes from a poor background and is determined to enter the world of high society for her daughter. Joo Dan Tae (Uhm Ki Joon), Soo Ryeon’s husband, is a wealthy businessman with his own ruthless ambitions.
“The Penthouse” is melodrama at its most excessive, with revenge, murder, betrayal, and social ambition constantly raising the stakes. Its outrageous twists and larger-than-life characters make even its darkest moments strangely entertaining.

“A Killer Paradox”
Lee Tang (Choi Woo Shik) is an ordinary young man whose life changes after he accidentally kills someone. He soon discovers that the people he kills may themselves be criminals, leading him down an increasingly dangerous path. Detective Jang Nan Gam (Son Suk Ku) begins investigating the murders, while former detective Song Chon (Lee Hee Joon) is also hunting Lee Tang.
The drama takes the familiar serial killer thriller and gives it an absurd moral premise: what if the victims really are people who deserve punishment? Its deadpan humor, strange situations, and morally ambiguous characters make it an unusual black comedy.
“Vincenzo”
Vincenzo Cassano (Song Joong Ki) is a Korean-born Italian mafia consigliere who returns to Korea and becomes involved in a battle against a powerful conglomerate. Lawyer Hong Cha Young (Jeon Yeo Been) becomes his ally, while Jang Joon Woo (Taecyeon), who initially appears harmless, hides a very different personality. Together, they take on a ruthless corporate enemy using methods that are anything but conventional.
“Vincenzo” mixes mafia drama, revenge, and courtroom battles with broad, often deliberately absurd comedy. The eccentric residents of Geumga Plaza add another layer of humor to a story where the line between hero and villain is intentionally blurred.
“Agent Kim Reactivated”
Manager Kim (So Ji Sub) appears to be an ordinary office worker and a devoted single father to teenage daughter Kim Min Ji (Seo Su Min). But when Min Ji goes missing, his carefully hidden past comes to light: he was once a highly skilled agent.
The biggest source of fun is the contrast between Manager Kim’s quiet life as an ordinary father and the lethal operative he has kept hidden. The transformation from mild-mannered dad to highly trained agent gives this action thriller plenty of comedic moments.
“Mask Girl”
Kim Mo Mi is an ordinary office worker who has always dreamed of performing but is deeply insecure about her appearance. At night, she becomes “Mask Girl,” an anonymous internet broadcaster who hides her face behind a mask. The character is played by three actresses at different stages of her life: Lee Han Byeol portrays Mo Mi before plastic surgery, Nana plays her after surgery, and Go Hyun Jung portrays her later in life.
“Mask Girl” uses dark humor to explore beauty standards, loneliness, obsession, and the desire to be seen. Its increasingly twisted story turns an ordinary woman’s secret online identity into a disturbing chain of events.
“Family Matters”
Han Young Soo (Bae Doona), Baek Chul Hee (Ryoo Seung Bum), Baek Kang Seong (Baek Yoon Sik), Baek Ji Hoon (Lomon), and Baek Ji Woo (Lee Su Hyun) appear to be an ordinary family, but they are actually a group of people with extraordinary abilities who escaped from a facility where they were subjected to brutal training. They now live together while trying to maintain the appearance of a normal family and protect themselves from dangerous criminals. Young Soo also has the ability to manipulate memories.
The idea of a dysfunctional surrogate family with superpowers already gives the drama an unusual comedic streak. Add violent criminals and extraordinary abilities, and “Family Matters” becomes a quirky mix of thriller, crime, and dark humor.

3 Unexpected Events That Shook Things Up In The Finale Of “The Affair Was Just The Beginning”
Chaos has completely overtaken and turned the lives of Kyung Hee (Kim Hye Soo), Jae Hong (Kim Ji Hun), Soo Jung (Cho Yeo Jeong), and Bo Sung(Kim Jae Chul) upside down in “The Affair Was Just the Beginning.” Their daughters Ye Ji and Min Seo caught their parents in compromising positions, and the noose is getting tightened as the missing detective Na Sol’s brother Na Do (Park Ryang Woo)… is hot on the heels of the two teens.
Adding another twist to the already complicated scenario is divorce lawyer Choi Sang Chul (Lee Dom Seok) who white trying to retrieve his phone comes across more damning evidence. So each one tries to save themselves and push the blame on to the other, things are utterly complicated and humorous.
Spoilers below
When the parents got caught by the kids
Ye Ji has seen the video of her father and Min Seo’s mother, while Min Seo has seen her father and Ye Ji’s mother together. The parents, equally shocked that they have been caught by their children, are equally embarrassed and panic-stricken, since the situation demands answers.
So as Kyung Hee and Bo Sung try to placate Min Seo, telling her it wasn’t as it seemed. Ye Ji, still in shock after witnessing the video, tells Min Seo she got it wrong. But the one equally shocked, if not more, is Jae Hong. He cannot believe Kyung Hee would cheat on him and is equally shocked that the man in question is Soo Jung’s husband. A classic case of don’t get mad, get even.
What follows is a hilarious blame game. Jae Hong, who is a pushover, is appalled at how his wife could hurt him like this and turns against Soo Jung, saying it was never love between them ever. The man never stands up for his actions and excels at passing the buck. On the other hand, Kyung Hee’s pent-up rage and frustration at keeping up with her curated family image crash to the surface. She is tired of portraying the farce of her curated family life and the perfect social media posts on which she has built a fortune.
Soo Jung blames Jae Hong for introducing her to the detective, leaving Bo Sung horrified that she had orchestrated it all. The couple, so consumed by their own rage and issues, keeps doing what they do best: passing the buck. As each blames the other’s child for causing the accident, it highlights how children often turn into mere pawns. For Kyung Hee, though, Ye Ji is fiercely protected, as she completes the perfect family picture. On the other hand, Soo Jung and Bo Sung use Min Seo as a prize between them as they engage in their warped couple dynamics.
The two girls, who have found comfort in each other, are lonely and lost and leave the house with none of the parents realizing they are the ones who need looking after.
Damage Control: Kyung Hee’s way
Hell hath no fury like a mother pushed to her limits. As both parents engage in whose child was at fault, little realizing there is greater danger lurking for the girls.
In the middle of the affair—in this case, the cover on the affair being blown—there is another intruder at home. Choi Sang Chul, who has been lurking in Kyung Hee’s home wanting to retrieve his phone, sees the video clip and decides to blackmail both Jae Hong and Soo Jung. Little do they realize it is Sang Chul who ran over Na Sol and not the girls. A skirmish results in him being knocked out.
While on the other side, Na Sol’s brother Na Dol has held the girls hostage at Kyung Hee’s holiday home. Both the mothers rush to rescue the girls, with Kyung Hee taking charge. She proves that when pushed to her limits, she is not one to backtrack but surge forward. For her, there is a solution to every problem. It is almost comical how the two women take on a man thrice their size in build and strength, though joined by their husbands, it is Kyung Hee leading the show.
Through a series of bizarre happenings, there are now not one, but three dead bodies, with both Sang Chul and Na Dol knocked out dead. Kyung Hee, well aware that her actions will catch up with her, seems confident to take on whatever comes her way, even if it means losing everything she has built from scratch. For her, her sole mission is to protect her daughter, and she can even kill for it.
It is also comical to see how everyone takes Kyung Hee’s lead, never once questioning the consequences. The police catch up with Kyung Hee over Na Dol’s disappearance since he was last seen on her premises and they have proof she was following him. A real badass, Kyung Hee calmly responds that she had hired him since her husband was having an affair with her neighbor, well aware of the repercussions on the reputation she had been trying to protect all along. Kyung Hee apologizes to the public for the scandal and inconvenience caused. Jae Hong and Soo Jung are now publicly exposed and are made the villains of the piece. Soo Jung’s clinic has shut down, and Jae Hong has been canceled; she has got her revenge even the coolest way possible on the two people who betrayed her. With her entire Captain Park image in shambles, Kyung Hee is unfazed because she knows she can rebuild herself again.
The end no one foresaw
It has been a classic case of each one putting the other under the bus. What began with one dead body, now there are three buried in Kyung Hee’s holiday home. This is the best kept secret between the couples, who have, despite the damage to their reputations, made a pact never to divulge. Adversity turns foes into fair-weather friends.
The police, on the other hand, keep reaching a dead end in their investigation. They retrieve Na Sol’s car from the river, and the dash cam is missing. On the other, they find footage of Na Sol being hit brutally by Sang Cheol, who according to them is on the run. The police come up with their own conclusion that Sang Cheol who has sought the help of the local mafia boss Du Sik, had killed the twins and in turn was killed by Du Sik. The case is closed, with Du Sik protesting that he had never committed the crime. The way the investigation is conducted, though hilarious, also satires how many cases end without justice being ever given.
What makes the ending so bizarre and hilarious is that no one really knows who killed whom. It is all so tangled up, with the police left trying to piece together a case where every version seems to contradict the other. And through it all, the family watches everything unfold, somehow emerging completely unscathed from the chaos around them. It is darkly comic, but also strangely reflective of life itself, where nothing is ever quite as clear as it seems, and there are always different versions of the truth.

“The Affair Was Just the Beginning” is a black comedy about the spiraling chain reactions that unfold when a popular influencer couple, who have built their public image around being a happy family, become entangled with their next-door neighbors—a married doctor couple locked in a bitter divorce battle—over a shocking secret that makes even an affair seem trivial.
The newly released stills capture a bizarre shift in the relationships that takes an unexpected turn. Kyung Hee (Kim Hye Soo) and Soo Jung (Cho Yeo Jeong), once locked in a bitter feud, join forces while clutching a shovel and a hoe. Curiosity is mounting over the true nature of the enormous threat the two encounter as they put their feud behind them.
Their unexpected alliance is not the only unusual development. Jae Hong (Kim Ji Hun) and Bo Sung (Kim Jae Chul) also team up against the twins who run the detective agency and have been hot on their trail in pursuit of a secret. However, they end up brawling in a disheveled state, hinting at the seriousness of the situation.
Other stills show the characters looking dazed, Kyung Hee holding up a written apology, and Jae Hong sitting in a police station interrogation room, teasing how the story will end.
With the characters facing one unexpected situation after another, it remains to be seen whether they will be able to regain peace after the chain of incidents that began with an affair and grew like a snowball.
The final episode of “The Affair Was Just the Beginning” will be released on September 4 at 8 p.m. KST.

3 Times The Plot Turned Yet Again In Episodes 5-6 Of “The Affair Was Just The Beginning”
All hell has broken loose. Not only has Kyung Hee (Kim Hye Soo) accessed the video of her husband Jae Hong (Kim Ji Hoon) and neighbor Soo Jung (Cho Yeo Jeong) in a compromising position, she has embezzled 300 million won (approximately $217,000) from her own company to pay off the extortionist who had filmed it. She has also, along with Jae Hong, covered up the tracks in the hit-and-run case involving their daughter Ye Ji, only to learn that it wasn’t Ye Ji, but Soo Jung’s daughter, Min Seo. Min Seo was the one driving, and Ye Ji is taking the fall for her.
Things get even crazier with Soo Jung’s former husband, Bo Sung (Kim Jae Chul), becoming the third wheel, or in this case the fourth. And the truth about Ye Ji and Min Seo’s relationship further complicates matters when the two find themselves witnessing unexpected developments between their parents. As each side is left guessing who knows what about the other, things are unpredictable if not getting crazier by the minute.
Here are three times the plot turned yet again in “The Affair Was Just the Beginning.”
Warning: spoilers below.
Kyung Hee’s troubles pile up
Bad luck comes in threes, and it’s Kyung Hee who is the recipient. She’s shocked at the discovery of her husband’s affair with Soo Jung. Even though Kyung Hee may have had her own reasons to become friends with her, she had never, ever thought that her husband and this woman would end up having an affair. It is the ultimate betrayal, and you can feel her anger as she silently seethes in fury.
But one has to hand it to her for calmly addressing the situation. It’s hilarious how she nonchalantly plays the video, as both Soo Jung and Jae Hong wait to see what’s on it. One doesn’t know whether to laugh at the absurdity of the situation or at the horror-stricken faces of Soo Jung and Jae Hong.
As if this wasn’t bad enough, Kyung Hee has managed to collect 500 million won to pay off the person who sent the message to her husband, threatening to upload the video, and she realizes it wasn’t even her cross to bear. Further complicating matters is when she learns the one behind the hit-and-run was never Ye Ji in the first place, but Min Seo. And underneath it all simmers the messy business of the teens and their tangled relationship. It’s a tricky triangle, with father and daughter both involved with the mother and daughter. So where does that leave poor Kyung Hee?
Fate really seems to be playing a joke on her. Yet it’s amazing to see Kyung Hee’s resilience. There are no histrionics or dramatic hysteria; she remains poised through the sequence of events. She is practical, she accepts what’s happened and makes sure all traces of the accident have been removed. It’s time to move onto the next chapter. She clearly tells Jae Hong they are just business partners, and he cannot expect anything else from her.
She packs her bags and moves out of the house, making both Jae Hong and Ye Ji tremble in fear. And she throws herself into work with her new client, Bo Sung, blissfully unaware that he is Soo Jung’s former husband.
But shocking news comes, which breaks Kyung Hee: she’s accused of embezzling the 300 million from her company, with repercussions for the investment deal. The investment will be made, but Kyung Hee will be replaced as CEO by her aide, betrayed yet again by someone she trusted.
She breaks down, and the pent-up hurt, the rejection, and the infidelity resurface all at once, but it’s also catharsis. Because Kyung Hee is not a woman you put in a corner. She is self-made and, though down, is not out until she says she is.
But there is one wrinkle: Bo Sung seems to be a little too clingy and a little too keen on her, and things are getting dodgy.
The phone swap mystery
Everyone in this drama is a criminal now, and none of them can trust the others enough to compare notes, which is exactly what makes the mix-up over detective Na Sol’s phone so delirious. Kyung Hee and Jae Hong think they’ve disposed of the detective’s belongings cleanly. The phone that they actually have is Sang Cheol’s, who is the lawyer Soo Jung had hired Na Sol to investigate in the first place. Sang Cheol, as it has been confirmed, is the one who killed Na Sol, who in turn had incriminating evidence against him. In the skirmish between them, their phones had gotten swapped. Na Sol is dead, and Sang Cheol wants his phone back badly enough to hunt down a stranger over it.
What follows is a small masterclass in how not to be subtle. Vanity is Jae Hong’s fatal flaw, and Sang Cheol plays it like an instrument—a “chance” gym encounter, a pair of limited-edition shoes, and Jae Hong never once stops to ask why a stranger is gifting him sneakers. He just assumes he’s got a fan. It’s the kind of gullibility that would be unbelievable if the show hadn’t already spent several episodes proving this is exactly who Jae Hong is.
The spiked drink that follows is almost beside the point. The real comedy is in the dramatic irony piling up around it. Soo Jung spots her lover and her husband’s lawyer out drinking together and assumes the worst kind of betrayal, when the truth is stranger and far more dangerous than an affair. Everyone is now protecting a secret from someone else who’s protecting a secret from them, and none of them have any idea they’re circling the same hole.
Sang Cheol wants his phone which would cost him his career. Soo Jung feels she has been conned by the dead Na Sol and that her affair will be known to her ex-husband. Jae Hong, who has curated the image of the perfect husband, is running scared. If his affair became public knowledge, it would ruin his reputation.
That’s the real joke of this arc: this is a group of people so committed to self-preservation that they can’t see they’re all trapped in the same maze, each one about to stumble into the other’s. And, unknowingly, there’s Na Sol’s twin, Na Do, who’s quietly working his way toward all of them.
Min Seo and Ye Ji discover their parents’ affair
Even among the kids, trust is running thin, mirroring the adults’ own game of charades. Min Seo, convinced the video will implicate her as the killer, wants Ye Ji to erase it. But there’s an edge to her pressure: Min Seo can’t shake the suspicion that whatever happens, Ye Ji will walk away unscathed while she alone pays the price. It’s turning her against the one person she should trust most.
Ye Ji, meanwhile, is fighting a battle she doesn’t even understand. Her mother has walked out, and she assumes it is because of her taking the fall for Min Seo, oblivious that the real reason is her mother’s discovery of her father’s affair. Into that confusion arrives a stranger, Sang Cheol, claiming to be her father’s friend, lurking in her home. The adults have been too warped to notice that the children are observing everything around them.
This is when the pieces collide. Ye Ji finds the USB hidden in a packet of salt, and just as she plays it and is stunned by what’s on it, Min Seo walks in on her own father and Ye Ji’s mother together.
Father and mother, mirrored and swapped—it’s the kind of coincidence that would feel ridiculous if the show hadn’t already built its world on the idea of absurd circumstances. How these two families untangle this, with the noose tightening from every direction, is the question the finale now has to answer.
