5 Times Episodes 9-10 Of “Love Class 3” Reminded Us How Hard The K-Pop Industry Can Be

The entertainment industry, especially K‑pop, isn’t for the faint of heart.

Romantic relationships are basically off‑limits, there’s constant pressure to be perfect, and the competition is cutthroat. Not to mention the brutal schedules, hierarchy, and a position you work years for but can lose in a single moment.

Now that the boys are all working together in the same entertainment company, the reality of the industry hit extra hard this week in “Love Class 3.”

These five moments from the latest episodes will make you realize that the K-pop industry is no joke.

Warning: spoilers up to episode 10!

1. Jae Min gets singled out

Now that the debut team has been formed, it’s practice-eat-sleep-and-repeat time for the trainees, and it isn’t all sunshine and rainbows.

This is especially true for Jae Min (Lee Woo Jin), who’s become the group’s main target for reprimands and underhanded comments from staff, likely because of his past scandal. To note, the scandal hasn’t fully been explained yet, but from the clues given so far, it doesn’t seem like Jae Min was at fault at all but instead was used as a scapegoat.

This singling out of Jae Min happened again this week during a dance rehearsal with a particularly grumpy teacher. When Jae Min can’t get a move down, he’s called out and ridiculed in front of the whole group instead of being helped.

That’s just not good teaching. When the goal is to get all the guys working together as a group, pushing certain members down in a public setting isn’t the way to go. This puts Jae Min in a funky state of mind for the rest of practice, and he continues to make mistakes.

Thankfully, Khun (Petch Panutuch Saelee) comes to the rescue later when all other trainees have left. He helps Jae Min get the step down with encouragement, not demeaning comments, and just like that, Jae Min relaxes.

The dance teacher can definitely take a few notes from Khun.

2. Soo An keeps fighting

From past episodes, it’s already known that Soo An (Seo Yi Han) has been giving the music industry his all, but he hasn’t gotten anything in return yet to validate his hard work. He’s nearly about to give up his dream when he’s been given a spot on a team, bringing him one big step closer to debuting.

In a short but touching scene, Soo An calls his mom to ask for her support to give it one more shot. Tears were most definitely shed because you can see he hasn’t given up hope despite how hard it has been for him. That takes guts.

If that didn’t already make you tear up, the preceding scene shows him training on his own over and over again. You can’t deny he’s put in the work to be an idol, so here’s hoping it finally pays off.

3. Hyun Jae works hard behind the scenes

5 Times Episodes 9-10 Of “Love Class 3” Reminded Us How Hard The K-Pop Industry Can Be插图11

Coming from the winning group from the idol survival show over a year ago, Hyun Jae (Saebyeol) is loved by the company, and this means jealousy from other members, even though he works just as hard as them, if not harder.

In the practice room, Soo An overhears some trainees talking about Hyun Jae. They think he gets special treatment while they only practice hard.

In the prior scene of the dance instructor calling out Jae Min, he also clearly favors Hyun Jae while dragging everyone else. It sounds like a compliment, but it actually doesn’t help Hyun Jae at all.

What the trainees don’t know is that Hyun Jae is always working hard. Every day, he gets up before everyone else at four in the morning to tidy up the practice room and set out fresh towels and drinks for the members.

The only person who picked up on Hyun Jae’s secret morning endeavors was, of course, the equally thoughtful and hardworking Soo An, who noticed how the room was prepared when they arrived to practice.

The reality of hard work in the K-pop industry is that it can go unnoticed and even be distorted. A little harmless jealousy from the other members is understandable to a point, and so far, the members seem to look up to Hyun Jae, but they definitely haven’t seen the full story.

4. Hyun Jae and Soo An are paired up again

5 Times Episodes 9-10 Of “Love Class 3” Reminded Us How Hard The K-Pop Industry Can Be插图18

History might be repeating itself and not in a good way.

A practice choreography video with Soo An, Hyun Jae, and two other members blows up, which is good news for the group, but it inadvertently puts Hyun Jae and Soo An in a tough spot.

Because fans love them together, the two are asked to ride the wave of popularity and do more videos with just the two of them. This excites Hyun Jae but worries Soo An.

This all-too-familiar scenario seems to scare Soo An, since it feels like they are reverting to their old ways when they were shipped by fans during the idol competition show.

Back then, what seemed to start as something genuine turned into something that felt like an act just for the fans. At least it felt that way to Soo An.

So far, Hyun Jae hasn’t expressed the same worries as Soo An, and it’s a big part of why Soo An has tried to distance himself and end their personal relationship.

And this all comes right when Hyun Jae and Soo An seem to be getting along after such a long period of tension between them. Talk about timing.

5. Khun had to run from his past

5 Times Episodes 9-10 Of “Love Class 3” Reminded Us How Hard The K-Pop Industry Can Be插图24

Granted, anything related to Khun’s career isn’t technically the “K‑pop industry,” but the idol politics, fandoms, and media scrutiny are similar enough that it fits. And Khun’s struggles are just as relevant to the plot. But first, a flashback.

Last week, a mystery woman arrived: Stella. Jae Min sees her standing outside Khun’s door, and he assumes she is romantically involved with Khun. Even though there was really no proof of this yet, he let his intrusive thoughts take over, and he’s been stressing about it ever since.

This week, Jae Min finally meets Stella, and the lead-up to this meeting is hilarious.

After practice, Khun and Jae Min decide to go out for drinks. They don’t label it as a date, but… it’s definitely a date. They get to drinking and chatting in what would appear to be a totally empty bar, and just as they lean in for what would be their first kiss, Khun gets a message from the still-unrevealed Stella.

Another surprise: Khun says Stella is on her way to meet them. That’s when Jae Min’s overthinking goes into overdrive, and he starts drinking a little too much (very reminiscent of the first time Khun and Jae Min drank together).

He wakes up in Khun’s bed, for a second time, to be specific, and the person who opens the door is the mysterious Stella.

Despite Jae Min’s initial suspicion that Stella might be Khun’s girlfriend, he finds out she is only his close friend from Thailand. And a really good friend, as a matter of fact.

It took a drunken dinner and another unplanned sleepover to finally learn this truth, but Jae Min got there eventually. Besides, it was very unlucky that such a good guy like Khun would be spending so much time with Jae Min while hiding a girlfriend.

5 Times Episodes 9-10 Of “Love Class 3” Reminded Us How Hard The K-Pop Industry Can Be插图30

Stella explains to Jae Min everything that Khun has been through when he was a famous musician in Thailand and how it changed him. She says he came to Korea to “breathe” and “escape” and that hits so hard when you think about how kind and softhearted Khun is. He’s been through a lot, and it explains why he’s so careful with the people he lets get close.

Stella also tells Jae Min how Khun has been going to Korean language school because he’s recently quite invested in improving his Korean, apparently because of a certain someone. Aww!

Hani Takes On Countless Responsibilities After Her Family Falls On Hard Times In “Love On The Menu”

The upcoming drama “Love on the Menu” has unveiled the first stills of EXID’s Hani in character!

“Love on the Menu” is a family romance drama that follows two former lovers who reunite eight years after a painful breakup. As they reconnect, they piece together the fragments of their broken families and create the warmest table of life together.

Hani stars as Han Gyu Rim, an employee at a side dish shop. After her once-comfortable family falls on hard times, Han Gyu Rim takes on numerous part-time jobs while also caring for her household. During that period, she meets Kim Moo Jin (Ha Seok Jin), and the two share a happy one year together before ultimately parting ways.

Having given up love for the sake of her family, Han Gyu Rim continues working at the side dish shop until an unexpected reunion with Kim Moo Jin brings a new turning point in her life.

The newly released images capture her hectic daily life, from delivering health drinks at dawn to juggling multiple part-time jobs and caring for her younger siblings, leaving her with little time to rest.

At the same time, the stills hint at Han Gyu Rim’s complicated feelings for Kim Moo Jin, who was working part-time at a restaurant at the time. While she cannot hide the smile that appears whenever she is around him, her eyes also reveal hesitation as she struggles with the heavy realities she faces.

3 Times Park Ji Hoon Proved Himself In Episodes 7-8 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”

With all the latest things that happened, Kang Sung Jae (Park Ji Hoon) has earned his stripes at the Gangrim Outpost. As the chef with the Midas touch who has boosted the morale of his comrades, his dedication has also earned him favor amongst the battalion. Sung Jae has been promoted to the rank of Private First Class and is now hailed as a combat hero after his performance in the training program.

Sung Jae has the skills to navigate the tricky tasks in the kitchen as he creates innovative and delicious meals. But the Guardian sets him up for a tougher assignment. He has been assigned the “help me comrade” button, but to access it he needs to win the trust and friendship of those around him. The task may seem simple, since Sung Jae is an amiable sort, but he tends to get pushed around. He needs to strengthen himself as well as empower those around him.

In the latest episodes of “The Legend of Kitchen Soldier,” we get an insight into how Sung Jae proves himself not just as a soldier, but as a human being.

Warning: spoilers for episodes 7-8 below.

The hamburger treaty

Sung Jae and Yoon Dong Hyun (Lee Hong Nae) are the new heroes of the battalion. It is proven that the food poisoning during the training was not caused by the negligence of the two cooks, but rather by contaminated water supplied to the battalion. Sung Jae, after wiping out the Vipers, is promoted, and Dong Hyun is finally granted his much-awaited leave.

Sung Jae is now in charge of the mess in Dong Hyun’s absence. Newly promoted and with the smile badge unpinned from his uniform, Sung Jae is determined to excel in his new innings. Dong Hyun, who in his own gruff way has always supported and backed Sung Jae, tells him that he needs to stand up for himself against the bullies at the base.

The troublemaker in question is Corporal Kim Gwan Chul (Kang Ha Kyung). Gwan Chul has made his dislike for Sung Jae obvious from the start. With Sung Jae being the new favorite of Gangrim Outpost, his resentment is even more apparent.

3 Times Park Ji Hoon Proved Himself In Episodes 7-8 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图1

Sung Jae is happy to carve out his new chapter as chief cook, but his peace is shattered even before the first dish reaches the table when Gwan Chul is assigned to the kitchen as additional manpower.

The Guardian informs Sung Jae that he has a week to win over Gwan Chul as a friend; otherwise, he will be demoted in his quest to become the best chef. This seems like mission impossible, since Gwan Chul has already started intimidating Sung Jae in his own way.

Gwan Chul refuses to help and instead keeps helping himself to the pantry and the mess stock. He slacks off and, during meal times, serves generous helpings to his friends while leaving the younger soldiers with leftovers and almost nothing.

3 Times Park Ji Hoon Proved Himself In Episodes 7-8 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图2

Gwan Chul threatens Sung Jae that if he dares to complain or snitch about him to Sergeant Major Park Jae Young (Yoon Kyung Ho), he will make his life a living hell.

Sung Jae, as we know, is a sensitive person and one who picks up on vibes. He wonders why Gwan Chul is the way he is. He overhears talk in the dorm that Gwan Chul was once assigned to the mess. He casually tells Gwan Chul that he was surprised to learn he had once worked there too, but is immediately snubbed and told to stop snooping.

Curious, Sung Jae probes further to figure out why Gwan Chul left the mess. Park Jae Young tells Sung Jae that he reminds him of Gwan Chul when he first arrived at the base. A soft-spoken young man with no parents, Gwan Chul had been lovingly raised by his grandmother, who sold hamburgers. He was such a mild-mannered boy that they pinned the smile badge on him when he first arrived.

3 Times Park Ji Hoon Proved Himself In Episodes 7-8 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图3

However, after his grandmother’s demise while he was on military duty, Gwan Chul’s personality underwent a seismic shift. His grief turned to anger, and he despised the army and its protocols for keeping him away from her. His regret turned into rebellion, and since then, he has been constantly defying the system and its orders.

Sung Jae feels for Gwan Chul. Both are dealing with the grief of having lost the people they loved the most. While Sung Jae internalized his loss and channelled it into creating something, Gwan Chul has turned his pain into destruction.

Sung Jae starts researching how to recreate the hamburgers that Gwan Chul’s grandmother made. Park Jae Young tells him they tasted like home, the traditional bakery kind. He keeps experimenting and serving them to Jae Young, who tells him they are still lacking something essential. Sung Jae uses his “help me, comrade” switch and calls Dong Hyun, who tells him the burgers had both a sweet and savory taste. He discovers the missing ingredient: jam. It’s the sweetness which is missing in Gwan Chul’s life.

Sung Jae’s compassion and empathy are endearing. He genuinely feels for Gwan Chul. He hasn’t judged him, not even once, but instead has wanted to heal and soothe the hurt beneath the prickly and angry exterior.

When he serves him the burger, he is rudely snubbed by Gwan Chul. But that is when the floodgates open — the pent-up hurt, the longing for his grandmother’s warmth, and the fear of being alone. It’s an emotional moment when Gwan Chul takes a bite and imagines his grandmother’s hand serving him the burger. But instead of his grandmother, he sees Sung Jae’s face, until he hears his grandmother gently tell him that all the wrong he does will eventually come back to him and to go back to being the way he was.

Though Gwan Chul doesn’t say anything, the Guardian informs Sung Jae that the likability meter is at 100 percent — he has found a friend.

Gwan Chul is an example of how angry people are often the ones hurting the most. No one so far has understood him the way Sung Jae did; all he needed was a hamburger to tell him he wasn’t alone and unspoken support from someone who wasn’t judging him.

Comrade camaraderie

3 Times Park Ji Hoon Proved Himself In Episodes 7-8 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图6

Gangrim Outpost and Sung Jae share a common fate: they shine in the face of adversity. After winning the top tally in training, the morale is high until a typhoon isolates the base with negligible supplies on hand. Though in the doldrums and cut off from the world, it’s the kinship amongst the soldiers which comes to the surface.

Commander Hwang Seok Ho (Lee Sang Yi), who has the reputation of just shooting orders and trying to impress seniors, doesn’t think twice when he tries to avert a dangerous collision, which would have proved fatal for Sung Jae, by taking the blow himself. He fractures both his hands, and the bandages are his badge of honor. It gives an insight into the man he is; he cares deeply for his men, but acts nonchalant.

3 Times Park Ji Hoon Proved Himself In Episodes 7-8 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图7

But the main issue is the depleting supplies. With no electricity in the base, it’s impossible to refrigerate ingredients, and with the bridge having washed away there is no way they can get anything. To make matters worse, the phone lines have been disconnected.

The morale is down, hunger at its peak. As they complain about the terrible food, Gwan Chul is the one who steps in. With a newfound friendship between Sung Jae and Gwan Chul, they think of ways to innovate. Sung Jae has an idea: why don’t they use the supplies of Park Jae Young’s dry squid? But how do they ask him since it is his personal stash? With the help of the Guardian, Sung Jae gets Gwan Chul to go get the packets, since the latter is more confident than he is. The squid is included in Sung Jae’s version of seafood paella, much to the delight of the soldiers, who feel they have been transported to Spain. Sung Jae remains motivated, and his sincerity that none of the soldiers be dissatisfied when they are served by him remains strong.

Subsisting on combat rations, Sung Jae decides to bravely open Dong Hyun’s locker, since he knows the diet-conscious senior has boxes of chicken breast stashed away. Though all are aware of upsetting Dong Hyun, they are in it together for survival, and at this point anything works.

3 Times Park Ji Hoon Proved Himself In Episodes 7-8 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图8

Seeing the enthusiasm that Sung Jae has instilled in everyone, Sargent Major Park Jae Young announces he will go out into the woods and collect herbs and mushrooms. Hwang Seok Ho forbids him, being his senior, saying that Park Jae Young needs to adhere to protocol. But Park Jae Young defies him and returns with wild herbs and mushrooms, which are soon transformed into a wild vegetable bibimbap under Sung Jae.

In the meantime, Dong Hyun, who is ironically bored on his holiday, is missing the base and cuts his leave short to join the rescue operations in rebuilding the bridge. It’s adorable how he shows a bit of jealousy at the budding bromance between Sung Jae and Gwan Chul.

3 Times Park Ji Hoon Proved Himself In Episodes 7-8 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图9

What is heartwarming is how everyone instinctively begins looking out for one another. Whether it is Gwan Chul helping in the kitchen, Park Jae Young risking punishment to forage for food, or Dong Hyun cutting short his leave, the outpost no longer feels like a collection of individuals, but a family. Somewhere along the way, Sung Jae’s sincerity has become infectious, bringing together people who would otherwise have little in common.

From boy to man

3 Times Park Ji Hoon Proved Himself In Episodes 7-8 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图10

There has been a remarkable change in Sung Jae’s personality. The timid, unsure boy who enlisted now appears confident. The accolades and validation coming his way have not made him arrogant, but rather have made him more sincere and determined. His team of friendly comrades is gradually on the rise, with Dong Hyun, Gwan Chul, and Park Jae Young being most fond of him.

Though honest to a fault and very conscious about never crossing the line, Sung Jae has been distressed ever since he overheard Captain Han Min (Lee Min Gu) planning to eliminate and destroy Cho Ye Rin (Han Dong Hee). Han Min has threatened Sung Jae that if he dares discuss what he heard, he would destroy him.

Sung Jae nervously agrees and has remained quiet, but it’s been bothering him. He’s aware of the manipulative ways of Han Min, who had also misreported that Gang-rim had sufficient supplies when they were struggling, all in an attempt to undermine Hwang Seok Ho.

3 Times Park Ji Hoon Proved Himself In Episodes 7-8 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图11

Ye Rin, who is investigating the poor supplies and the scam, is also being closely watched by Han Min. Ye Rin has always stood up for the soldiers, and this is when we see another switch in Sung Jae. He goes and warns Ye Rin about what he had heard, asking her to be alert. But she brushes him away, not wanting a junior to get involved in the politics of the barracks. This is the first time we see a new maturity in Sung Jae. It is quiet resilience and fortitude.

Seeing the way his seniors, fellow soldiers, and the base have enveloped him in warmth, he is willing to stand up for them even if it means taking on an influential role. But is Sung Jae up for this challenge? Han Min is a shrewd and calculating opponent, and the temperatures are just beginning to rise once again at Gangrim Outpost.

3 Times Gong Myoung Supported Shin Hae Sun In Episodes 9-10 Of “Filing For Love”

There’s not much time left for this K-drama, but it looks like things are going toward a total trainwreck. Surprisingly, what started as a funny, light, and spicy romantic comedy, at this point, is turning into a messy office soap opera. However, not everything is lost. The engaging chemistry between the lead couple is keeping this boat afloat, and hopefully, they’ll be strong enough to get this ship going. Through every up and down, here are all the times Noh Ki Jun (Gong Myoung) supported Joo In Ah (Shin Hae Sun) in the latest episodes of “Filing for Love.”

Warning: spoilers from episodes 9-10 ahead.

1. Solving a new case together

These episodes start off with some sweet moments between Ki Jun and In Ah. Once they confirm their mutual feelings, it’s pretty easy for them to become all lovey-dovey with each other, which could turn into a problem when it comes to being as low-key as possible about their romance, at least at work. However, it doesn’t take long for In Ah to lock in and become the focused professional she is—so much so that she even forgets her first date ever with Ki Jun.

Nonetheless, this couple seems to be a match made in heaven. No one could understand her sense of responsibility better than Ki Jun. In that sense, In Ah is very lucky because Ki Jun willingly joins her to solve a new case of work harassment that, coincidentally, ends with the victim taking Ki Jun’s overseas assignment. So, for now, it is confirmed that Ki Jun is going nowhere far from In Ah’s side.

But it seems that the writers are determined to never let them catch their breath. In Ah and Ki Jun can’t even enjoy a romantic dinner without Jeon Jae Yeol (Kim Jae Wook) barging into In Ah’s apartment, briefly stirring the waters between them. The only thing saving this mess is Ki Jun’s emotional maturity and In Ah’s decisive attitude, which does not give any room for misunderstandings, ending up in a steamy night. Sadly, this is only the calm before the storm.

2. Being targeted by Park Ah Jeong

When it comes to secondary characters, Park Ah Jeong (Hong Hwa Yeon) is very hard to understand. It seems that watching In Ah enjoying her romance with Ki Jun and realizing that Jae Yeol is willing to give up everything for her is too much for Ah Jeong to bear. And whether she is too complex to be relatable or too two-dimensional to empathize with, this lady ignites more than just mixed feelings when she decides to take revenge on In Ah by exposing the evidence about her alleged affair.

3 Times Gong Myoung Supported Shin Hae Sun In Episodes 9-10 Of “Filing For Love”插图6
3 Times Gong Myoung Supported Shin Hae Sun In Episodes 9-10 Of “Filing For Love”插图7

This not only creates chaos within the company but in the progression of the drama as well. She didn’t have any character development throughout the show, and now, she is turning into a petty villainess. She knows she doesn’t have any chance with Jae Yeol. He’s been clear about his feelings, but the delusions she has about him seem to be stronger than logic, and not even Ki Jun’s pleas to deny the rumors persuade her to back down. But naturally, she gets fired when Jae Yeol discovers the truth.

In the end, Ah Jeong seems to gain nothing out of it. With Jae Yeol defending In Ah by admitting their past relationship, and Ki Jun supporting her through it all, In Ah isn’t afraid to point that out. What goes around comes around in these types of stories, and the fact that In Ah can still stand tall despite the struggles she’s been facing, while Ah Jeong sinks into regret and debt, speaks volumes about how karma could eventually work itself out.

3. Getting entangled in office politics

For the most part, these episodes focus on a lot of frustrating, tense, and a bit unnecessary moments of office politics. Between Jeon Seong Yeol (Kang Sang Jun) trying to take advantage of the ruckus to force In Ah into taking his side, even threatening her to harm her team, and Jae Yeol’s wife stirring things up even more to push her own agenda, all the good things happening in between get diluted as if they never happened.

Even when Ki Jun tries to take the fall to protect In Ah, and she steps up to protect him as well, always making sure that they are hanging in there and being as supportive as possible, all that moves to the background. Ultimately, it looks like Jae Yeol’s family is more than willing to make their problems everyone’s problems. But, how will that play out for the future of In Ah and Ki Jun? Let’s find out in the upcoming and last episodes of “Filing for Love”!

3 Times Tensions And Tastes Ran High In Episodes 3-4 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”

Private Kang Sung Jae’s (Park Ji Hoon) skills with the skillet and the chopping board have become the talk of the military barracks in “The Legend of Kitchen Soldier.” The Gangrim Outpost holds the infamous reputation of being below par when it comes to soldier performance as well as the food served.

But it seems the rather odd Sung Jae, who has the knack for turning the tables with his innovative cooking skills, could be on his way to become the camp’s coolest chef. However, as there is many a slip between the cup and the lip, Sung Jae has several challenges on the way before he conquers the base kitchen.

Politics, favoritism, and egos are at their peak as Sung Jae needs to convince his uptight Company Commander Hwang Seok Ho (Lee Sang Yi) that he belongs in the kitchen. He’s also facing animosity from his seniors. But once his dishes hit the table, they do more than just satisfy hunger, they transport the soldiers into hilariously dramatic alternate realities. Here are three times tensions and tastes ran high at the Gangrim Outpost.

Warning: spoilers from episodes 3-4 ahead!

The curious case of the pork cutlet defection

3 Times Tensions And Tastes Ran High In Episodes 3-4 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图

In the latest episodes, Park Sung Jae’s attempt to impress Hwang Seok Ho with a special pork cutlet gets thwarted, since Seok Ho is adamant about transferring him. Sung Jae’s VR console informs him that this is the end of his innings as a kitchen soldier. The quest is over even before it began. His helplessness and disappointment are heartbreaking. It also feels unfair of Hwang Seok Ho to dismiss the dish without even trying it.

In the meantime, during nighttime patrolling, the base has an unauthorized visitor—a North Korean citizen. Hwang Seok Ho, in his efforts to project himself as the savior and protector of the nation, insists on reporting it as a case of defection. But Master Sergeant Park Jae Young (Yoon Kyung Ho) is adamant about investigating the matter first, given military protocols. As the two bicker, the man in question insists he wants to return home and not defect.

First Lieutenant Cho Ye Rin (Han Dong Hee) insists they feed the starving man first before beginning any investigation. Hwang Seok Ho pushes for ordering the best takeout instead, since the mess food is so bad that even if the man had wanted to defect, he would think otherwise. The visitor, however, insists he will not eat or even take a sip of water until he crosses the border.

Unlike Hwang Seok Ho and the other unit officers, Ye Rin is neither bothered about rewards nor recognition. She wants to first feed the starving man, as they verify his identity and interrogate him. She asks Sung Jae to bring the untouched pork cutlet dish and serve it to him since he has refused everything else. Sung Jae is hesitant, and his confidence is at an all-time low. You can virtually feel his nervousness.

But that is when the tide turns as the visitor cannot resist the temptation. The dish is literally the taste of Neverland for him. It is almost comical when he imagines himself back home, tuning into South Korean airwaves to listen to music. The pork cutlet becomes a symbol of capitalism for him but also a bite that promises freedom. As he imagines the entire unit transformed into a rock band with him as the audience, he almost chokes.

For a moment, one feels this is truly the end for Sung Jae. Instead, the visitor suddenly announces he wants to defect because the cutlet tasted like the freedom he had long craved back home. The irony is hard to miss. In the end, it is not patriotism, but comfort, music, and food that tip the scales.

3 Times Tensions And Tastes Ran High In Episodes 3-4 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图2

Hwang Seok Ho is smug. After all, he was the one who wanted to report it as a case of defection from the start. But as the visitor leaves, he wants to thank the chef who made the dish. He tells Sung Jae it is by far the best meal he has ever had The two most unlikely souls in the unit, Dong Hyun (Lee Hong Nae) and Sung Jae, finally get their moment to shine as they are rewarded by headquarters.

The incident is widely reported in the media as the “Pork Cutlet Defection.” Sung Jae is simply relieved that he has earned his spot in the kitchen. Of course, Hwang Seok Ho later claims his initial rejection of the dish was only because of its poor presentation, and he conveniently takes credit for being the one who believed Sung Jae belonged in the mess all along. And the VR informs Sung Jae that his path as chef has once again started.

The politics of braised pollock fillet

3 Times Tensions And Tastes Ran High In Episodes 3-4 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图3

Back in the kitchen, Sung Jae works hard as he tries to improvise on his chopping, stir frying, and seasoning skills. He has been given the rose knife, a jump in grade, and a special uniform. The once untidy kitchen is spotless now, so much so that Sung Jae even lends Dong Hyun a helping hand without making it obvious. He salvages his dishes for him too but never once crosses the line with his senior, doing everything as a team member. This remains one of Sung Jae’s most endearing qualities: he is a team player.

The aroma from the kitchen has brought in the winds of change, as soldiers who once dragged their feet to the mess now sprint toward it. The leftover capacity is down by 70 percent, the VR informs Sung Jae.

A new challenge comes their way when they are informed that an Assemblyman will be visiting the station for inspection. His visit coincides with the day the mess serves the worst dish on the menu: braised pollock fillet. It is unanimously detested for its pungent smell. Hwang Seok Ho insists on curating a special menu and demands the best supplies be delivered. He passes on the responsibility to Ye Rin to oversee it. However, Hwang Seok Ho’s rival at headquarters turns down the request for supplies.

Unfortunately, the dish being served will still be the braised pollock fillet, and Sung Jae is appointed to salvage both the dish’s reputation as well as that of the mess. The VR guides him through the preparation, but he is unable to remove the fishy smell. The Sergeant warns him that if he fails, it is the end for him.

Poor Sung Jae, you genuinely feel for the guy. He is earnest, does his work sincerely, but somehow also ends up being the one taking the fall whenever things go wrong. He recalls how his father had once suggested tomato sauce for a similar preparation and decides to do the same thing. Everyone warns him he is ruining the dish further. The VR also informs him that he is exhausting himself since surfing recipes on the console is draining his strength. The Assemblyman, eager to win votes, wants to expose the poor food being served to soldiers.

Sung Jae serves the dish and informs the Assemblyman it is an Italian version of the preparation: the pomodoro braised pollock fillet. The expressions around the room range from horror to smugness to irritation as everyone waits for the verdict. It is clear it is the visitor’s least favorite dish, and he is only doing it for the camera. As the Assemblyman begrudgingly takes a bite, he suddenly screams “thief!” and we are treated to a hilarious visual of him chasing a figure wearing a rice bowl mask. He finally announces the dish is delicious and that it has made him greedy for more rice.

As everyone digs in, the mood completely shifts into celebration. Whose clever idea was it? Ye Rin reveals Sung Jae was the one who suggested they serve what the soldiers actually eat instead of over polishing the truth. But Sung Jae, now completely drained and low on energy, collapses before he can witness the celebrations. The Gangrim Outpost, meanwhile, is soaring high in popularity as the gastronomy station.

A barbecue of emotions

3 Times Tensions And Tastes Ran High In Episodes 3-4 Of “The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier”插图6

As Sung Jae wins over hearts and stomachs at the base, grief continues to weigh heavily upon him. He misses his father, and as he embarks on the same path, he finds himself weighed down by loneliness. When he collapses, he finds himself meeting his father in a meadow. His father turns around and smiles at him. The moment is deeply emotional, as Sung Jae breaks down in tears and embraces him. He tells his father that maybe he never thought much of it back then when his father cooked, but now it is something he truly wants to do.

His father tells him that though the work is hard, the joy of serving people and watching them enjoy what he cooked had given him immense happiness. He offers Sung Jae seaweed soup and tells him that instead of relying on external forces, he needs to believe in himself. Maybe this is exactly what Sung Jae needed to hear—the comfort and reassurance from his father that he was going to be okay. When he wakes up and once again begins surfing through his console, Ye Rin looks at him quizzically, wondering what exactly is going on with this strange yet talented soldier.

When a team barbecue is announced with officers from military headquarters visiting the base, it is clear there is an unspoken rivalry between Hwang Seok Ho and one of the officers, as well as tension between Ye Rin and the same officer.

Dong Hyun makes a complete mess of grilling the meat, and the unit is left starving as the officers devour the meat while the soldiers are left with vegetables. Once again, Sung Jae takes charge with the tongs and expertly barbecues the meat, retaining its flavor and winning points across the table.

The chief officer suggests upgrading him to the officers’ mess. Hwang Seok Ho instantly agrees, eager to play the yes man to his superior and score brownie points. Ye Rin, however, refuses. She has a point. The soldiers have long been fed less than appetizing fare, and moving Sung Jae away would not only be unfair to them but would also place unnecessary pressure on him.

Over the dinner table, the tension is palpable. Hwang Seok Ho realizes that his fellow officer is trying to undermine him in front of the senior officer. On the other hand, Ye Rin, who has constantly tried to keep up with the men and their ways, continues to be patronized. Apparently, her mentor, an upright Major, had been made a scapegoat over certain issues. Though things are still unclear, it is evident she too is carrying emotional baggage of her own.

As Sung Jae succeeds with the daily preparations, he tells Dong Hyun that he is simply happy seeing his comrades enjoy the food. With the help of the VR console, Sung Jae has developed a knack for gauging the quality of rations and realizes spoiled and low quality ingredients are being supplied. He initially keeps it to himself, but when Ye Rin overhears him say it aloud, she firmly tells him never to stay quiet about such things. It is the first time she speaks sharply to him, but amusingly, the VR informs him that she approves of him. It is yet another stamp of confidence for the unsure Sung Jae.

The vendors are under the Sergeant Major, who is responsible for inspections, and Ye Rin begins to understand there is far more to the situation than meets the eye, especially since vendors and commissions are serious business. Will she be able to get to the bottom of it?

In the meantime, since the food at the base has now become the talk of the town, a broadcasting network arrives to film the unit.

The episode ends when the attractive young reporter leading the team suddenly runs up and hugs Sung Jae. For the first time, you see his perpetually sad eyes truly smile as the rest of the unit stares open mouthed in shock. The moment is equal parts cute and hilarious because things are clearly getting exciting at the Gangrim Outpost, and the strange Sung Jae is well on his way to becoming the most popular guy there.

4 Times Gong Myoung Was Drawn To Shin Hae Sun In Episodes 3-4 Of “Filing For Love”

After an intriguing and exhilarating premiere, “Filing for Love” is becoming even more interesting with some twists and turns that nobody saw coming. If you thought this would be a slow-burning story where the enemies-to-lovers would shyly approach each other, then you’d better think again because things are heating up at full speed. There’s a reason why you should never judge a book by its cover, and while Noh Ki Jun (Gong Myoung) tries to figure Joo In Ah (Shin Hae Sun) out in an attempt to get his perfect life back, he will discover more than he ever expected or even wanted to. Here are all the times that our male lead got inevitably drawn by the female lead in the latest episodes of this show!

Warning: spoilers from episodes 3-4 ahead.

1. Watching her attitude around her team

When it comes to the workplace, it’s hard to know who is your friend and who is your foe, at least that’s what Noh Ki Jun has believed so far. But when the lead of the PM audit team falls into a fake affair scandal, things become quite awkward for Ki Jun. Suddenly, he not only has to work alongside a team that he doesn’t particularly like, but he also has to stand up against Joo In Ah, who is determined to see things through within the team, whatever the outcome might be. So, before he can even plead his own case to return to his previous position, Noh Ki Jun has to defend his team lead so the poor man doesn’t get kicked out for good.

Funnily enough, things get resolved thanks to In Ah’s intervention. Amid this predicament, Ki Jun can’t help but get confused about her attitude, which makes him question who the real Joo In Ah is. She is utterly uncompromising about sticking to the company’s rules and her principles, but he can’t forget about the anonymous tip claiming she has an inappropriate relationship with a married man at the office. Seeing how she is willing to literally put her head on the line to get things right for their team, even if that means becoming a bit of a villain for some people, Ki Jun has no choice but to follow her and discover whatever she is hiding behind her apparently unapproachable persona. And what he finds out is shockingly hilarious.

2. Discovering her hidden hobby as a model

For someone smart enough to become the ace of an audit team, Ki Jun isn’t exactly the most cunning of people. After deciding that In Ah couldn’t be having an affair, he tries to let go of his suspicions, but curiosity gets the better of him. At first, it seems like she is simply attending an art class, but upon closer inspection, he discovers that she is actually the class’s model and a nude model at that. He might have wanted some leverage on her, but seeing In Ah completely naked surely wasn’t part of his plans. And, as surprising and hilarious as it is, it goes without saying that this is a bold move for a K-drama, which makes things all the more fascinating.

Underneath this absurd scenario, there’s an underlying tension that starts to grow subtly but surely. And Ki Jun’s situation becomes not only awkward but positively unbearable. However, to his dismay, it is clear that In Ah knows there’s no better defense than an attack, and that’s exactly what she does. She acts as if nothing had ever happened despite his attempts to apologize and clear things up, leaving him speechless and befuddled. But we can’t judge either of them just yet, since we are barely getting to know them. Given how contradictory In Ah can be, Ki Jun decides to follow her lead, at least for the time being. After all, she is still his boss.

3. Working together on a harassment case

One of the scariest things about office work life is that, even when you wish you didn’t have to work with someone, there will be times when you have no other option. And sadly, that’s been a constant for Ki Jun. Against his will, he gets dragged alongside In Ah when she spots a suspicious case about a disciplinary measure against a female worker, who also happens to collaborate with a famous executive from their company.

4 Times Gong Myoung Was Drawn To Shin Hae Sun In Episodes 3-4 Of “Filing For Love”插图16

For all their differences in personality, when it comes to work, nobody can deny that there’s no better team than Joo In Ah and Noh Ki Jun. He is able to perfectly match her crazy antics and doesn’t hesitate to do what’s necessary to get the job done, even if that means pretending to be a lovey-dovey couple or running through hundreds of stair floors. In that sense, he trusts her enough to do what she asks him to do, even if he doesn’t fully understand it at first.

And this team effort pays off in the end. They are able to catch the executive red-handed while harassing his female employee and even stop him from doing it again, arriving like the coolest of couples in action. Furthermore, they start to inadvertently get closer, making the chemistry and tension between them absolutely delicious. And one of the best parts after this is how Ki Jun also starts to broaden his own perspective after working so closely with In Ah.

4. Following up a misconduct report about her

Unfortunately, right when things seem to be working out, Ki Jun receives another tip about In Ah’s supposed affair, and this time, it has a photo as evidence. It isn’t enough to prove it, but it is enough to create a reasonable doubt. What could have been the perfect opportunity for Ki Jun to bring down his nemesis now feels like a painful stab. You can see that in the way he recalls with a nostalgic tone every moment they shared and that looked like they were warming up to each other. This man got so curious about In Ah that he inadvertently fell for her, and it doesn’t seem like he’s realized it just yet.

After considering his options, Ki Jun returns to the art academy where he silently draws a picture of In Ah, pouring his feelings into it. The intensity, the longing, and the tension that built up during these few minutes are so big that they ultimately explode in a passionate and fierce kiss that is as unexpected as it is hot. But by the looks of it, this outburst of emotions will only further complicate things. What could the future hold in store for this couple? It seems Saturday can’t arrive soon enough for us to see more of “Filing for Love”!

4 Times Kim Jae Won Was Unknowingly In Love With Kim Go Eun In Episodes 5-6 Of “Yumi’s Cells 3”

The finale of “Yumi’s Cells 3” is only two episodes away, and our male lead, Shin Soon Rok (Kim Jae Won), is finally utterly in love with Yumi (Kim Go Eun), to the point where Mr. Calm and Professional is losing both his calm and professionalism. While the “Yumi’s Cells” series is a walkthrough of Yumi’s mind and her multiple romantic relationships throughout her 30s, it is always interesting to see how the male leads opposite her fall in love with her, and episodes 5 and 6 gave the audience exactly that.

These two episodes mostly showed Shin Soon Rok’s realization of his own emotions, his hesitation, and, in the end, his acceptance. From Shin Soon Rok breaking multiple self-imposed rules to his professionalism leaving his body as soon as writer Kim Ju Ho (Choi Daniel) makes yet another move on Yumi, here are four times Shin Soon Rok was clearly in love with Yumi in the latest episodes of “Yumi’s Cells 3.”

Warning: spoilers ahead!

Flipping the script once again, episode 5 of “Yumi’s Cells 3” began from Shin Soon Rok’s point of view, not only showing the inner workings of our male lead’s brain but also presenting some of the same scenarios from previous episodes in a new light.

At first, the audience sees how, during the team dinner, Shin Soon Rok is extremely tired and simultaneously overwhelmed by the conversations happening around him. Then his Rational Cell says something that proves once and for all that Shin Soon Rok is falling for Yumi, whether he admits it or not: “It is rare for passion to spark. But I don’t like that.”

It turns out that every single time the senior writer asked for Shin Soon Rok’s help to get closer to Yumi, Shin Soon Rok hated it. His frustration over the entire situation ignites the fire in his Emotional Cell’s hut; in other words, Shin Soon Rok, the man who rarely feels emotions at work, is fuming while maintaining a calm exterior.

While characters who are more expressive and animated, like Yumi, fall in love in equally animated ways, it is more believable for a character like Shin Soon Rok, who rarely lets his emotions show on his face, to fall in love just as quietly.

There is no single moment that definitively showcases the beginning of Shin Soon Rok’s growing affection for Yumi, but his emotions are nevertheless undeniably showing.

The rule violations

Since the start of “Yumi’s Cells 3,” Shin Soon Rok has been established as a character with rules that he never breaks. For instance, he always keeps his personal and professional lives separate and draws a clear line whenever he sees those two parts of his life merging.

However, surprisingly, he breaks quite a few rules in episodes 5 and 6, making it clear that Soon Rok is falling for Yumi.

After the movie theater disaster, where writer Kim Ju Ho invites himself and makes Yumi think the only reason Soon Rok agreed to the movie was to set her up with the writer, Shin Soon Rok breaks multiple rules in a row, confusing even his own cells.

First of all, to Soon Rok, Yumi is just another writer from work whom he doesn’t even work directly with anymore. Right? Well, if that were the case, then why would he run after her to buy her an umbrella?

Next, when Yumi apologizes for getting angry at him over the entire movie fiasco, Shin Soon Rok, the man of few words, outright tells her that he found her cool. Cue the swoons. But also, this is not something you say to a coworker while getting soaked in the rain together after midnight.

Lastly, there is the cute main-leads-sharing-one-umbrella trope. The audience loved it, but it is clearly a violation under Shin Soon Rok’s cell judiciary.

All of these rule violations beg one question: why would a man of rules and boundaries leap over those boundaries? The answer is clear: he is in love.

The unsuccessful love surgery

Some people, when in love, lose their brain cells—no pun intended. However, Shin Soon Rok is not one of them; hence, he quickly catches on to the fact that Yumi likes him. His Love Cell gets an X-ray of Yumi’s love and comes to the conclusion that it has to conduct surgery on Yumi’s feelings, which is a formal way of saying he should let her down gently to preserve their professional relationship.

So, Soon Rok rejects her by asking her to set him up on a blind date. The surgery works fine; it sends Yumi the signal that Soon Rok is not interested in her.

However, Shin Soon Rok’s Love Cell takes another X-ray and, surprise, surprise, even though the surgery was a success on Yumi, it did nothing for Soon Rok, who is now yearning for Yumi and regretting asking her to set him up with anyone nice she knows.

He even tries to go on the date, but despite everything seeming normal, nothing actually feels normal because he would rather be on a date with Yumi instead of her junior.

The final showdown

The climax of episode 6 was by far the best part of “Yumi’s Cells 3” because it was the first time in the entire series that the audience got to see Shin Soon Rok become unhinged because of his feelings for Yumi. And who doesn’t love a male lead being a loser in love?

Here’s the scene: Soon Rok is heading to the restaurant for his second date with Yumi’s junior. But after a call with Yumi’s assistant, he learns that Kim Ju Ho has gone out to eat with Yumi, and Soon Rok finally loses it. He ditches his date, heads to the place where Yumi is, and starts fighting Kim Ju Ho.

The scene would not have been nearly as iconic if Shin Soon Rok had actually thrown a proper punch. Instead, he holds Kim Ju Ho’s ankle and pushes him into the bushes while simultaneously trying to keep his own balance. It looked like a type of martial art one unlocks only after foolishly falling in love with one’s senior.

Despite the chaos of episodes 5 and 6, the climax ended up being quite optimistic: Shin Soon Rok finally confessed his feelings to Yumi. Now the ball is in Yumi’s court, so only time will tell how the story of our leads will unfold in the final two episodes of “Yumi’s Cells 3.”

4 Times Episodes 13-14 Of “Phantom Lawyer” Gave Us Mixed Feelings

As we reach the final leg of “Phantom Lawyer,” another case ends but a new one arrives. And this one might be the most complicated, both emotionally and professionally, for Shin I Rang (Yoo Yeon Seok). Though the drama has shown a steady pace and consistency in most of its run, in the latest episodes, some situations have brought more than a couple of conflicts, raising all kinds of feelings and shaking our hero and viewers to our core. Keep on reading to learn which ones they were!

Warning: spoilers from episodes 13-14 ahead.

1. The boy’s ghost saying goodbye to his parents

Last week, we saw Shin I Rang running around to solve the case of a small boy’s ghost, with the situation escalating to the point of almost killing him. However, that false alarm only serves to rage-bait whoever sees it, because I Rang quite literally returns from the doors of heaven after a few seconds, almost as unaffected as if it had never happened. Afterwards, him and his team get back to business to discover the boy’s missing corpse, since the perpetrator refuses to reveal where it is.

An emotional moment happens while the boy possesses I Rang’s body, pushing the criminal to give the corpse’s location and finally reveal the circumstances in which the boy died. But contrary to the other cases, this one feels somehow rushed or cut short. Despite having a sort of “happy” ending, the parents barely make an appearance at the end, only saying goodbye to their son for a couple of minutes. This minimizes the actual weight of their loss and only focuses on the perpetrator’s story. It makes you tear up a little, but aside from that, it doesn’t feel like it had the closure it deserved.

2. Shin I Rang distancing himself from Han Na Hyun

Afterwards, things don’t get all that better. After a near-death experience, anyone would assume that I Rang and Han Na Hyun (Esom) would take the step to finally confess their mutual feelings. But again, this part of the plot keeps getting unnecessarily dragged, preventing them from developing an actual romantic chemistry between them. Admittedly, this isn’t a romance show, so not having that much of it shouldn’t be a disappointment. But still, it feels like a waste of a good pairing to keep them in the game of pulling and pushing.

Luckily, the characters’ personalities don’t give way to unnecessary misunderstandings. Na Hyun isn’t the insecure type, nor is I Rang a petty man, so ultimately they talk and reach an agreement. Their union might not be that of lovers just yet, but they remain good friends and colleagues. And this time, I Rang might need as much help as he can, because this new case is about to shatter his whole world. In a sense, their team is more important than any kind of romantic relationship that could potentially be born.

3. Shin I Rang learning about his father’s past

Upon learning that the boy ghost’s dad is related to the man who ultimately led to the death of I Rang’s dad, our hero has no choice but to face the past that he has been avoiding for so long. Despite suffering much of the scorn and resentment from society, it is only until this moment that he has the courage to learn the full story. Or at least, the story that has been known so far. And given I Rang’s naive nature, it doesn’t take much to shatter the image he’s had about his father.

Furthermore, Yang Byeong Il (Choi Kwang Il) turns out to be even more vicious and crafty than anyone could have expected. The man goes as far as to risk his own health to prevent anyone from revealing the truth, manipulating and twisting the facts. Even his son, Yang Do Kyung (Kim Kyung Nam), starts to fear what could be behind his father’s extreme actions. But sadly, he successfully ignites the seed of doubt in I Rang’s heart. And he’s the only person who could reveal the truth by connecting with his father’s ghost.

4. Shin I Rang reuniting with his father’s ghost

One of the most anticipated moments from this drama arrives when his father, Shin Gi Jung (cameo by Choi Won Young), appears out of the blue in his office. But what could have been an emotional and tenderhearted reunion between father and son turns out to be a cold and awkward meet-up. I Rang not only refuses to help him, but also decides to send him off without even returning his memories, something highly out of character for him.

One of the things that stands out more is the inner conflict in I Rang, who struggles to reconcile the loving and caring image that he has of his father with the corrupt and selfish version that Yang Byeong Il has created throughout the years. Fortunately, he decides to follow his heart and trust the man that always showed to be a good father to him. By returning his memories, he is prepared to face the truth once and for all. But what will be the ending to this story? Let’s find out together next week!

4 Times Episodes 3-4 Of “Yumi’s Cells 3” Gave Secondhand Embarrassment And Also The Giggle

“How can a person in love be calm?” is the question raised in the latest episodes of “Yumi’s Cells 3,” and our protagonist Yumi (Kim Go Eun) spends the entirety of episodes 3 and 4 being anything but calm!

The next episode preview in episode 2 had already made it clear that Yumi was going to fall in love with her editor Shin Soon Rok (Kim Jae Won), but the audience could not have anticipated how much secondhand embarrassment a person in love can give those who observe them. With that said, episodes 3 and 4 also had moments that made the audience twirl their hair, kick their feet, and squeal from vicariously living through Yumi’s newfound crush.

So, from Yumi falling for Shin Soon Rok’s hidden charm to her being a fool in love and conjuring up “signs” where there were none, here are three times “Yumi’s Cells 3” embarrassed us yet made us giggle.

Warning: spoilers ahead!

Shin Soon Rok’s quiet yet chaotic inner world

This moment is more about Shin Soon Rok giving the viewers secondhand embarrassment, but it has to be mentioned for how relatably chaotic Shin Soon Rok’s calmness is. Just like the previous installments of “Yumi’s Cells,” “Yumi’s Cells 3” finally gives the audience a view into the inner world of Yumi’s new love interest, and his overworked Rational Cell is pitifully relatable.

During the premiere week’s episodes, Soon Rok’s calm demeanor wreaks havoc inside Yumi’s cell village. While she tries to strike up small talk at every opportunity, simply following the unwritten social rules, Shin Soon Rok has seemingly chucked his social-rule handbook in the trash and answers “아 네” (literal translation: Ah, yes) to every single question. His telegraphic answers infuriate Yumi’s Manner, Swear, and Pride Cells, to name a few.

However, the recent episode shows Soon Rok’s perspective. He is the embodiment of introversion, not to be confused with shyness. A shy person is unable to hold a conversation due to general anxiety, but an introvert simply prefers his alone time, as being around people drains their energy reserves. Shin Soon Rok keeps all of his cells, except the Rational Cell, asleep during the day, which makes his behavior rational, no pun intended. He is truly himself when he is at home, all alone, after work. That’s when, to him, the food tastes the best and the music actually sounds euphonious.

Due to his lack of cell activity during the day, in the previous episode he unknowingly called Yumi’s friend’s maltese stupid because his sole working cell, the Rational Cell, could not, for the love of God, understand why a person who neither has a maltese nor owns one would find a true statement like “maltese are stupid” offensive. It is a bit embarrassing but Soon Rok being overworked makes his behavior understandable.

Yumi’s cells get electrocuted

This is not a drill. Yumi’s cells literally get electrocuted because of seeing Shin Soon Rok’s smiles, both at her and in front of her, for the first time.

In the previous episodes, Yumi hated Soon Rok’s guts for his manner, or the lack thereof. So, when the editor at her publishing company calls her to let her know that Shin Soon Rok will not be working on Yumi’s project anymore, she is ecstatic. But her happiness is short-lived when she, however, realizes that Soon Rok asked to be taken off her project himself, cue: angry Pride Cell.

When episode 3 starts, Yumi is sitting in front of an already mentally drained Soon Rok, who had to sacrifice his weekend for a surprise work trip, and wants answers. His brain battery goes from 10 percent to 0, and he has no idea what to say. So, he smiles, looking directly in Yumi’s eyes, and says nothing.

If he thought this trick would work, he was…correct. Yumi’s cells get electrocuted, and she now has a crush on him.

This entire scene is both funny and heart-fluttering, partially because Kim Jae Won’s smile is genuinely cute and partially because this moment is relatable. Who hasn’t fallen for a handsome guy before for the sake of him being handsome? It’s a scene that is sure to make the audience squeal in joy. Not to mention, Kim Go Eun’s smitten look perfectly depicts the expression of someone who, at that very moment, developed a crush.

Her Love Cell escapes the freezing chamber, and her Thump and Boom Cells are thumping and booming her heart extra fast. Her reaction is sweet and sure to remind the audience of their first crush.

Shin Soon Rok’s hidden charm

Is it because Yumi now has a crush on Shin Soon Rok that she finds him charming, or has he just gotten more comfortable with her, or is it both?

In episode 4, Yumi joins a writers-and-editors workshop on a whim solely to spend more time with her new crush. Soon Rok and Yumi enter the elevator, and he presses the button for the floor Yumi is staying on. Yumi asks him if his room is also on the same floor, to which he says yes, before adding, “I’m rooming with the Editor.” Yumi, to continue the conversation, adds, “Really? That can’t be fun,” and lo and behold, the guy who was adamant about putting his earphones in to avoid small talk replies with, “Such is life at the bottom.”

Maybe it is the way the actor delivers the line, maybe it is the fact that Soon Rok now feels less pressure as Yumi is no longer his superior, or maybe it is that the audience has been starved so much that a simple joke has turned into an oasis. Whatever the reason, seeing Shin Soon Rok crack a joke is thrilling, to say the least. And his charm works perfectly on Yumi.

It was definitely not a sign

People in love, more often than not, develop a magic system where they can take every minute glance their crush throws their way and turn it into a love confession. Unfortunately for Yumi, and fortunately for the viewers for the added entertainment element, our main lead is a writer with a wild imagination, and her crush on Shin Soon Rok is simply working as a catalyst, leading to reactions like a car crash that the audience can’t look away from.

The first incident happens when Yumi and Soon Rok arrive in Busan. She asks him if he is joining the other writers and editors for a drink, hoping she can spend more time with him. But when he says he is tired, she claims the same, and both head to their separate rooms.

A while later, she is on her balcony and sees Soon Rok walking on the hotel’s lawn and messages him happy birthday. Soon Rok replies with a simple thank you, but the message has a smiley face. A normal person would not think twice, but as Yumi is in love, her cells convince her that through this emoji, Shin Soon Rok is secretly trying to convey his interest in her. And the sun in her cell village turns into the same emoji: 🙂

But the actual secondhand embarrassing moment happens when Soon Rok accompanies Yumi to the hotel after she leaves the group dinner alone. When Yumi asks about his plans for the night, he tells her about the movie he is watching in 30 minutes. Yumi’s cells, once again, convince her that Soon Rok is giving her a sign, and she asks him if she could join him for the movie. Seeing his hesitant rejection and Yumi’s embarrassed reaction is painful.

While her taking a leap of faith and asking Soon Rok out is a bit embarrassing, it also shows the audience that it is fine to ask someone out. The worst they can say is no, and that will always be better than keeping your feelings all to yourself and regretting in the future.
