Lee Sun Bin, Yoo Jae Myung, And More Take On The Challenge Of Setting CSAT Questions In “Ugly Duckling Ms. Maeng”
The upcoming film “Ugly Duckling Ms. Maeng” has shared new stills!
“Ugly Duckling Ms. Maeng” is a comedy film about Maeng Bo Ram (Lee Sun Bin), a Korean language teacher from a small provincial town who unexpectedly joins the team responsible for creating Korea’s College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT), also known as the Suneung, due to an administrative error. The question-setting headquarters is sealed off for 40 days as the committee works in complete secrecy to create “problem-free questions” without any typos or room for dispute.
The newly released stills offer a glimpse into the CSAT question-setting headquarters, which has long been shrouded in mystery. Captured in a room with walls covered in notes, Maeng Bo Ram appears deep in thought as she rests her chin on her hand, showing how focused she is on preparing the CSAT questions.
The stills also capture the exam committee members gathered around a conference table late into the night, exchanging opinions. Moon Joo Yeol (Yoo Jae Myung), the head of the Korean language question-setting committee, along with Maeng Bo Ram and philosophy professor Go Jae Bong (Kim Kyung Min), are shown reviewing questions together, sparking curiosity about how the process of creating questions that could determine the fate of Korean test takers will unfold.
Another image shows the exam committee members cheering with their arms raised above their heads, offering a glimpse into the ups and downs they experience as they work to complete the questions.
A video released alongside the stills shows actors Lee Sun Bin, Yoo Jae Myung, Kim Young Min, and Jeon Seok Ho leaving messages of encouragement for job seekers and students preparing for the CSAT.
Lee Sun Bin said, “The person who stays seated until the very end wins,” while Yoo Jae Myung remarked, “Let’s take on this challenge in style.” Kim Young Min shared, “Once you know the reason, you won’t get it wrong next time,” while Jeon Seok Ho offered the message, “Every box on the OMR sheet represents a step in life.”

“Ugly Duckling Ms. Maeng” will hit theaters nationwide this October.

Watch: Lee Sun Bin Accidentally Becomes A CSAT Question Setter In New Comedy Film “Ugly Duckling Ms. Maeng”
The upcoming film “Ugly Duckling Ms. Maeng” has unveiled its main poster and trailer!
The main poster captures a meeting room inside the question-setting headquarters in complete chaos, with CSAT passages flying in every direction. At the center, Maeng Bo Ram looks utterly shocked and unsure of what to do. Meanwhile, Moon Joo Yeol (Yoo Jae Myung), the head of the Korean language question-setting committee, and Park Kyung Tae (Kim Young Min), the head of the CSAT review committee, engage in a heated confrontation across a desk. Korea Institute for Curriculum and Evaluation employee Ki Jun Su (Jeon Seok Ho) desperately throws himself between them in an attempt to stop the fight.
The poster offers a glimpse of the intense 40-day project undertaken by the question-setting committee members as they work to create an exam that will determine the fate of approximately 500,000 students.
The newly released trailer begins on the day of the CSAT, when the entire country is on edge. As announcers report that aircraft takeoffs and landings have been suspended and the opening of the stock market has been delayed, the trailer then flashes back 40 days to reveal the chaos behind the scenes at the question-setting headquarters.
Maeng Bo Ram initially arrives at the headquarters bright-eyed and cheerful, only to be dragged into somewhere without knowing what is happening. As Ki Jun Su frantically shouts, “It’s an emergency in the Korean language department right now!” the trailer reveals that an error occurred during the recruitment process, resulting in the inexperienced Maeng Bo Ram being brought in instead of another Maeng Bo Ram who was actually a seasoned expert.
Inside the completely sealed-off facility, the inexperienced Maeng Bo Ram refuses to be intimidated as she struggles to keep up with the veteran Korean language question setters, whose heated meetings are filled with intense debates and raised voices. The trailer rapidly cuts between the tense discussions and Bo Ram’s determined efforts to complete her mission.
The trailer ends on a lighter note, with Park Kyung Tae giving Bo Ram a thumbs-up and telling her, “You did very well.” Meanwhile, Bo Ram ducks down behind the desk, cheering with delight at his praise.

Choi Woo Shik, Mun Ka Young, Heo Nam Jun, And More Confirmed For New Romance Drama
Choi Woo Shik, Mun Ka Young, Heo Nam Jun, and more have been confirmed for the upcoming drama “Whale Star: The Gyeongseong Mermaid” (working title)!
Based on a webtoon that reimagines Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Little Mermaid,” “Whale Star: The Gyeongseong Mermaid” is set in 1926 Gyeongseong (present-day Seoul) during Japanese occupation and follows the story of Kang Ui Hyeon, a man who dedicates everything to his country, and Su A, a woman who risks her life to protect him.
The drama will be co-directed by director Heo Jin Ho of “Christmas in August” and “One Fine Spring Day” and director Yoo Bum Sang of “Twinkling Watermelon” and “Study Group.” The star-studded cast consists of Choi Woo Shik, Mun Ka Young, Heo Nam Jun, Yoo Jae Myung, Kang Han Na, Kim Yeo Jin, and Gong Seung Yeon.
Choi Woo Shik will be independence fighter Kang Eui Hyeon who has a pro-Japanese father. While carrying out a mission with Song Hae Su to liberate their country, he is saved by Heo Su A, who he begins to consider his country. The casting raises anticipation for Choi Woo Shik’s portrayal of Kang Eui Hyeon’s pure love and strength in a period of great turmoil.
Mun Ka Young plays the kind-hearted Heo Su A, a maid of a pro-japanese household. After helping rescue independence fighter Kang Ui Hyeon from the sea, the two begin to develop feelings for each other. Mun Ka Young is expected to subtly portray the emotions of Heo Su A as she meets Kang Eui Hyeon and Song Hae Su—who enter her life like ocean waves.
Heo Nam Jun plays independence fighter Song Hae Su. After losing his family, he becomes a resolute figure willing to sacrifice his life for the greater cause. Although he becomes intertwined with Heo Su A in an unfortunate way, he continues to run into her as if by fate. Heo Nam Jun will portray the fiery Song Hae Soo with his passionate acting.
Furthermore, Yoo Jae Myung plays Kang Eui Hyeon’s pro-Japanese father Kang Geun Hyung. Working with Japan, he uses his son to fulfill his own desires.
Kang Han Na takes on the role of Han Yeon Kyung, a strong figure who doesn’t lose her resolve of gaining independence even while losing her husband and family in the fight.
Kim Yeo Jin plays Hwang Soon Im, the owner of cafe Whale Star who acts as the independence fighters’ mental support and provides a hideout for them, considering the members to be like family.
Gong Seung Yeon will make a special appearance as Yeo Yoon Hwa, the daughter of the pro-Japanese household where Heo Su A works. The actress will once again impress with her wide acting spectrum as she takes on the figure of Yeo Yoon Hwa, who acts prickly to her maid Heo Su A but still cares deeply for her on the inside.
“Whale Star: The Gyeongseong Mermaid” will premiere in 2027. Stay tuned for updates!
